IL-2 Sturmovik Review

IL-2 Sturmovik
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Il-2 is something that gamers and flight simulator enthusiasts could only hope for. It beats anything ever produced so far. The simulator was designed by pilots for pilots. Many of the people in the design team of Maddox Games have experience in the aviation industry. Much of the design of the game was done with the input from gamers in the internet flight-simulation community. Never has a developer been so keen on what his customers wanted.
Even the "newbies" will have a lot of fun with the easier settings which make this incredibly accurate flight simulator an easier "video-game" stile game. However, the fun is really in the realism that IL-2 delivers, and soon there will be a lot more fans of flight-simulation once gamers take a look at the absolutely best graphics ever seen in a World War Two sim.
This simulator includes the Eastern Front theater, in which the Soviet Union fought against the German Forces in World War II. You will be able to play for either the Soviets or the Germans. Many of the aircraft modelled have never been modelled before as an integral part of a flight simulator, like the Messerschmitt Me-321 and Me-323 Gigant, the Fieseler Fi-156 Storch, the Focke-Wulf Fw-189 Uhu, the Polikarpov I-153 Chaika, the Polikarpov Po-2 (U2), the Lavochkin La-7, the Bell P-39 Airacobra, and the Rumanian IAR-80 and 81.
Of all the flight simulators I have ever played, none have better virtual cockpits or flight characteristics. Each flyable plane has extremely photorealistic cockpits. The flight model is impeccable. The handling of each subtype of aircraft is accurate. For the first time ever I was able to feel how hard but how efficient it was to fly a German Messerchmitt Bf-109G-2. One of my all time favorites, the USA Lend-Leased P-39 Airacobra is an incredible machine, but you will learn why it was such a demanding craft to fly. The star of the game is definitely the Soviet ground attack plane IL-2, of which you will be able to fly something like 7 different versions, each accurately modelled, and with the option to play as rear-gunner too. The campaigns in the game are historical.
For multiplayer, you will be able to play through the Internet, both joining sessions, hosting your own, or through the Ubisoft game service. Ubisoft is publishing the game. Anyway, you can have up to 32 people in dogfights, or up to 16 people in full cooperative missions. I already wasted hours and hours playing over the Internet with the Demo. It is just incredible.
IL-2 has many great features. It has a training feature. It includes both a Quick Mission Builder, to allow players to build fast missions to get on with flying (and being able to save and load), as well as a Full Mission Builder, that gives the mission builders the ability to create missions that are as simple or as complex as possible, accessing every feature of the game, all maps, all aircraft (including Aces), stationary objects (parked planes, trucks, tanks, artillery, etc), ships, trains, tanks, vehicle columns, etc. You will be able to build from the simplest single player mission to complex multiplayer missions. You can even build cinema like missions that you can just watch AI play it, and you can take beautiful screenshots. There is a mission recorder so that you can watch your missiohn after you are done, and you can save it to watch later. Finally, you can dstribute your mission recordings, your screenshots, and your custom missions through the Internet for all to see.
If there is a negative point to IL-2 is the fact that you cannot fly every single plane. But a huge internet community already has been formed with modellers and programmers who are producing cockpits, add-on aplications, and even completely new aircraft and other models for IL-2 with the support of the developers, who will actually approve addons and make them available through the Internet as a part of the sim (for free in most cases), as opposed to the usual unfinished feel that many games and simulators get when a custom addition is made. Also, this is no simple game, it is a demanding simulation, make sure you have a descent 3D video card that supports OpenGL (DirectX is also supported), you want to be able to see those incredible details, and the more RAM the better.
I have never been this happy with any other PC product. I played the Demo for days non-stop. I am afraid after you play IL-2, you will simply uninstall every other flight simulator you ever played. I have played just about every WW2 simulator ever made, including Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Aces Over Europe, European Air War, Screaming Demons Over Europe, B-17II, Battle of Britain, Air Warrior, Aces High, Combat Flight Simulator 1 and 2, and Jane's WW2 Fighters, amongst some others. I have to say that IL-2 has to be the most accurate of all. Not only that, I have not played a more fun simulator since Jane's WW2 Fighters. This is just outstanding, and I am glad a developer finally got it right. After a while it gets tiring to spend money and have a mediocre product in your PC.

Dora the Explorer: Back Pack Adventure (Jewel Case) Review

Dora the Explorer: Back Pack Adventure (Jewel Case)

My daughter is 3 1/2 and loves Dora. But this game is WAY too simple for her. There just aren't enough things to do, and even the higher levels don't really challenge compared to her two other games: Care Bears and Blue's Clues. If you have a two-year-old or a child who's never played on a computer, this is great at teaching basic color, shape & number recognition and how to use a mouse & click. A better choice for a 3 - 4 year old is Blue's ABC Time Activities.

Scrabble Complete Review

Scrabble Complete
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is essentially the crystal box game (Scrabble 2) made compatible with Windows XP. It will not freeze up and works smoothly on my machine. (Some of the people below who have experienced freeze up under Windows XP are probably using Scrabble 2, not this version. They need to double-check.) There are no improvements, however, that I can see, and the claim on the package that it "Includes Merriam-Webster's Official SCRABBLE Player's Dictionary, 3rd Edition" is not quite correct since the program continues to disallow many words that are actually in that dictionary, including the frequently used "da." Use "da" in a play and Maven will dissolve it, spin your letters back into your rack, and take her turn!
Of course this is a disappointment. Also disappointing is the new music, which is as bad as the old music. Fortunately it can be turned off. Maven's annoying chortles after scoring are gone, so I suppose there is some improvement! But basically infogames or Hasbro or whoever is responsible for the software missed an opportunity to make this into an outstanding program.
Still it is a very good program and a lot of fun to play. It automatically saves all your games and under the Mini Games menu allows you to retrieve each one and have Professor Maven critique your play (and her play as well, actually). The four basic comments she makes are, "xxx is probably best," "xxxx is one of the best moves," "xxxx is a good move," and "xxxx was played." She follows the latter three comments with the question "Can you find a play at (e.g.) 8H"? or something similar.
Well, I could find the better play now that you mention it, Maven, if the board displayed the coordinates! (Squares on the 15 x15 Scrabble board are identified by "A" through "O" across the top and 1 through 15 vertically. Thus 8H is the center square while 1A is the square in the upper left corner.) Plays that go across are identified as starting at the square beginning with the number, e.g., 8H while the beginning square of plays going down begin with the letter, e.g., H8.
Anyway, you can click on "Next" and Maven will reveal what is probably a better play. And then she gives an analysis of that play, your play, and other plays comparing the points scored and the value of the letters left in your rack. This "value" is NOT how many points the letter is worth when played, but how valuable it is to have in your rack on an average basis. Thus playing "orang" is not as good as playing "along" as an opening word because, although they both score the same, if you play "along" you keep the "r" which is considered more valuable than the "l."
It would help if the program displayed these average values, but it doesn't. Incidentally, when Maven gives a play in her analysis she gives a complete identity to the play. For example, "LIMITED (5E,20,O)." The characters in the parens stand for where the word started and which direction it went (5E: across), how many points were scored (20), and which letters were left in the rack after the play (an O).
Another nice feature is that Maven gives you a National Association Scrabble rating for your play in the last ten games. Go to Mini Games menu and click on Professor Maven, and there it is. This is not the same as your rating against Maven, which is displayed on what the program calls your "Player Card" as you set up a game along with your best single play, your highest scoring game, and the number of games you have won. Maven will keep these stats for your spouse and kids as well. Of course these stats can be fudged by quitting games you are losing before they are completed, which will keep your rating higher than it would otherwise be.
A couple more points: You have to have the CD inserted in order to the play the game. Bad! Also the game works only as a full-screen game. This is also bad, but you can actually get to some other computer task while keeping the game by hitting the flying Windows key on your keyboard. Scrabble Complete will then be a minimized icon at the bottom of your screen which you can click to resume play.
One more point: you can make Maven go first by passing. Sometimes however she will just exchange some letters and you might have to pass again, which would be VERY dangerous, since after Maven exchanges letters she is increasingly likely to score a BINGO! which is very annoying. Best strategy in my opinion is to play what you can on the first play, being careful to arrange your play so that Maven cannot get a double-word score by adding an "s" (or "r" or "d," etc.) to your play. If you have an "s" you don't use it of course (unless you are going BINGO! yourself or otherwise scoring a monster). Instead you save it and align your opening play so that you can use your "s" to advantage--that is, if Maven doesn't get there first! Your having an "s" cuts down on her chances somewhat.
By the way, Scrabble Complete includes a Boggle CD-ROM game that I haven't had a chance to look at.

Oregon Trail 4th Edition Review

Oregon Trail 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got hooked on the original Oregon Trail several years ago, so I was excited when I saw there was one that would be compatible with my new computer. I had to look for a "cheat sheet" online to figure out how to catch fish, and it had some other pointers that helped me navigate through the game. The worst part of the game is crossing some of those rivers and seemingly getting "stuck" and unable to move without ending the program from the task manager (saving the game is an option), then going back into the game. Other than that, the game was a delight. The only thing I miss from the original is being able to have families with you on the trail. Instead you have two other, unrelated people, who may or may not give you good advice along the way.
This game is addictive - I played for hours; died once, and made it all the way to Oregon twice. There is a checklist at the end that determines how much land you get - I got 80 acres the first time, 40 the second.
Again, lots of fun for old and young alike.

Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo Review

This is an incredible bargain. This was a state-of-the-art graphics/game package when we bought it for our kids in '94 or '95 -- and it's such a great game that our 5-year-old still plays it! Really a fun story -- great characters, lots of fun adventures, good music. Lots of games hidden within the adventure. Our kids have liked all of the Humongous titles (Fatty Bear, Putt Putt, Freddi Fish), and they are just incredible bargains when Humongous takes their price down after a couple of years. A can't-miss purchase.

Today's the grand opening of the Cartown Zoo, and there's still so much to do: zoo chow is running low, and all the baby animals are missing. Putt-Putt and Pep need your child's help to reunite the little ones with their parents before Outback Al can open the gates. Along the way, they'll swing across alligator-infested rivers, play ice hockey with a polar bear, build a bridge out of icebergs, bop with dancing penguins, and enjoy other adventures. This zoo is full of loyal friends and captivating challenges that are sure to run wild through your child's imagination.

Flat Out 2 Review

Flat Out 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a blast to play and looks great! It takes the first game and greatly improves it. Be warned , you'll need a pretty good video card to make this game really shine. ( I'm running a BFG 7800GS 256mg, game graphics set to max. I'm also using a Saitek Cyborg Gold joystick. ) Cars control very well. The physics is not so realistic as to diminish the fun factor. Smashing up your car does not greatly affect the drivability. Your car can be ready to fall apart and you are still able to control it. ( except for the demolition derbies, losing a wheel or 2 does make it harder to control ). There is a much better selection of tracks & cars compared to the first one. The cars & tracks are set up to allow for a much greater speed as well. The game plays more like a race with some demolition derby thrown in. AI is pretty good and the difficulty is not too bad. The mini games can be a little tough. On-line is fun & easy to set up, but dial-up won't work. You have to have DSL. And yes, it does have 5 disks, just like almost every other game released these days. ( like Half-life 2 , Quake 4 , Doom 3 , Call of Duty 2, Farcry ,etc.etc. ) Hopefully soon, DVD's will become the norm, rather that the exception.
If you liked the first one ( but wanted faster cars ), this is definitely worth a look. ! (Check Wal-Mart, they just lowered the price to under $20.00 ). This game is a great value at that price !

The Oregon Trail, 5th Edition Review

The Oregon Trail, 5th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very happy with this game- it took the bets parts of the previous Oregon Trail incarnations and wove them together for a good overall product. I can appreciate a company which recognizes both the weaknesses and the strengths of their products and uses this information to get better. In this Oregon Trail you can once again chose how many you will travel with and name them (for some crazy reason this feature was eliminated in the 4th Oregon Trail edition), but you can also CHOOSE the times you stop to collect wild fruit or fish, instead of these circumstances just happening randomly (which does not make as much sense). To me, these were the biggest changes to previous games, but they were improvements.
Aside from the above changes, the basics of the game remain the same, and it will look familiar to those who have played other editions. A few things have been updated, particularly some aspects concerning Native Americans and some geography, but the good times still keep rolling.
