(More customer reviews)I have taught preschool computer lab for two years and have used this software this year as well as Dora's Lost City Adventure. My younger 3 year old students find the game a bit hard and need some assistance, but once they have the idea, they enjoy repeating the tasks over and over (which this game is definitely repetitive). My older 3 year old and 4-5 year old students will play this game for about 10 minutes and then want to move on to another game.
The one problem that I seem to have with this software is that students will easily find their way into the sticker album but then get stuck there. It takes some real effort to exit out of the sticker album because the exit button hides itself after a moment.
As a personally note, I have to listen to this software's soundtrack for 2.5 hours per day while working in the lab, and I truthfully get sick of hearing it. Other games have lots of varying music, but this one seems to play the seem music and catch phrases over and over and over and over and OVER! Luckily, since children seem to bore of this game in under 30 minutes, most home PC users won't have to put up with this problem for long.
Overall, your young Dora fan will probably enjoy this software for a short time each time you load it.
NOTE: I have successfully used this software on Windows 2000 Professional operating platform.

Reader Rabbit Kindergarten - Bounce Down in Balloon Town Review

(More customer reviews)My 4-year old son loves this program and has been playing it for over a year on a Windows PC. It runs fine under Windows XP. However, I bought an iMac thinking that it would be a better platform to run games, but so far every Reader Rabbit title that we own has choppy audio when running on the Mac. I've scoured the Internet looking for help but none to be found. Can't even find out who the real author of this software is, as there is no web site for The Learning Company (the URL goes to Broderbund Software, but no help available there either). It's a good thing the software is cheap, since if it doesn't work your only recourse is the trash can!

Pajama Sam 3: You Are What You Eat (PC) Review

(More customer reviews)My 4-year old son really likes this game. It's exciting for him to see the changes each time he plays. Pajama Sam games are a little more challenging than Putt Putt and Freddie Fish. In this particular game, there is a part that requires reading, and an advanced understanding of riddles. I suppose he could click and click until he gets it right but that would take a long time and he would get frustrated. (You have to match riddles with the correct answers.) Because of this I wouldn't recommend it for a younger child who wouldn't have the assistance of an adult, but otherwise, it's very entertaining.

JumpStart Reading for First Graders Review

They played with this for a few hours and then turned it off. I really was disappointed as I remember my oldest playing with Jump Start programs at an early age and loving them!

Pajama Sam Life is Rough for PC Review

(More customer reviews)This is one of those where I would like to do half stars, 3.5. It does have the same sort of "find this, then that to fix the thing", but it's not as good as PJ Sam's previous adventures. Each time it's played, it's the same, no randomness. Sam's voice is different this time and the character is not as well done. The game seems to work better under WinXP than previous PJ Sam adventures that were Win9x/ME vintage.

The only thing is that newer computer might not be compatible with the game. I have Windows Vista and at 1st it didnt work on my machine, but after looking through all the files i manually installed it. Although on fullscreen, it glitches every once in awhile.

This game is so much fun that it has to be replaced! It's not too hard for the 3-4 crowd with a little help, but yet challenging enough for the 5-6 crowd. It has a fun plot and extra silly jokes and games.

When I found that it taught simple math addition and measurement, etc., I decided to pick it up right away. After we ran it on my son's computer, we were pleasantly surprised by the vivid animation and the quality of the games it offerred. Usually the drawings of the characters in a computer do not look as good as what you would see on TV, but this one is just as good. It even plays the theme song in the beginning. BUY THIS ONE!! Your kids will learn a lot from it, even though he may think he is just playing an interesting computer game.

JumpStart Phonics Review

(More customer reviews)The software is very user friendly, in fact my two & a half year old is able to navigate it and enjoys the activities. It teaches alphabet and words and has stories but does not really teach PHONICS per se. Great beginning tool for 3 to 5 year olds but would not expect a first grader to gain much from this product. The Jump Start products have met our expectations so far.

There just aren't enough things to do, and even the higher levels don't really challenge compared to her two other games: Care Bears and Blue's Clues. If you have a two-year-old or a child who's never played on a computer, this is great at teaching basic color, shape & number recognition and how to use a mouse & click. A better choice for a 3 - 4 year old is Blue's ABC Time Activities.

Smart Steps 1st Grade Review

(More customer reviews)We have been bringing home software learning toys for our son since BabyWow. I think we've probably tried them all by now.
Our first reaction to this one wasn't positive. We started referring to it as "The annoying pencil" because the "host character" is an animated pencil programmed to sound like an overeager nag.
However, my son played with it occasionally, and we gradually began to realize that this was one of the better organized computer learning toys we'd brought home. Rather than the very simple-minded, one game one subject model that most of these learning toys use the games are graduated so that they get gradually more complex and the concepts build logically on one another. He actually seems to be learning from this game, where so many of the kids learning tools seem to subscribe to the education as "trained pony tricks" models.
Someone else mentioned that they found the British accent off-putting, but our son didn't seem to have a problem with it. The actor speaks clearly and doesn't use any inscrutable slang that we've noticed.
We've decided that this is the one we'll try for second grade.

(More customer reviews)My daughter rushed to complete all of the tasks needed to start the show. It took a period of a few weeks playing an hour at a time. She was very persistent and enjoyed creating the signs that pop up throughout the scenery. The costume-matic (which forces you to make exact change) was very good for my first grader and took some time so that she didn't exceed the amount required. However once done and we saw the show, the game leaves you unable to do anything else. We have to sign on as a new person or uninstall the game to start it over again. I'm considering trading my game with friend, so they can enjoy it.

Little Monster At School Review

(More customer reviews)I was worried with the many comments made by others who were unable to get this book to run on a newer operating system. On Window's XP the CD would not open so I followed the example from the software company following these steps:
First create a folder on your hard drive called Living books. Then create another folder within Living books folder titled "Little Monster at School". Open C drive and go to the DVD drive holding the CD, right click and open with explore. Copy the contents of the CD to the new folder on the hard drive. Find the file that is the application file (look for the iron of the monster). Right click, choose properties, select the compataility tab, change this to Windows 2000, Check the blocks for 256 color mode and 640 X 480 screen size. Click apply and close. Right click on the application icon again and select Send to Desktop (shortcut). Everything should work fine now without the use of the CD. Do this for ALL Living Books in newer operating systems...from windows XP and up.
I know this is alot of work but the books are worth the time. My kids love them all! Wish they'd write more! This story is very interactive and enjoyable!
