This is a beloved program that my sons played with when they were young, 15 years ago. Worked perfectly back then. However, this version doesn't work on our XP or Vista computers. Very, very disappointed.

Super Solvers - Midnight Rescue Review

Great game, but don't expect to run it in Windows XP using Windows 95 compatiblity mode. After installation, when attempting to run the program, an error "The MIDI driver for your sound card could not be found" appears and the only option allowed is to exit the program. My MIDI drivers are working fine, and dxdiag reports no errors. I've tried three different MIDI emulators (Sound Blaster Audigy, Realtek, and Yamaha) and all of them result in the same message. And the documentation does not state anywhere that a MIDI device is even necessary. Apparently, others have the same problem as there are several web postings asking for help with the problem. Further, the web site listed for help and support no longer exists.

Go Diego Go: Safari Rescue Review

The only thing the PC version of this game has in common with its PS2 and XBOX360 counterparts is the title character. 5 mindless mini-games and your kid is done. I've played game demos that dwarf this rip-off.
No doubt families will buy thinking it resembles the other versions. It doesn't. Safari Rescue for the PC is one of the SHORTEST GAMES IN HISTORY. Replay value not included.

Disney's Math Quest with Aladdin Ages 6-9 Review

This CD helps kids build a variety of math skills, including addition and logical thinking. The different levels are good, but what I really love is how you can move around and play your favorite games again and again. The only negative is there is no subtraction practice. But kids learn without even realizing it. This is great. I wish there were more like it!

Smart Steps 1st Grade Review

Smart Steps 1st Grade

We have been bringing home software learning toys for our son since BabyWow. I think we've probably tried them all by now.
Our first reaction to this one wasn't positive. We started referring to it as "The annoying pencil" because the "host character" is an animated pencil programmed to sound like an overeager nag.
However, my son played with it occasionally, and we gradually began to realize that this was one of the better organized computer learning toys we'd brought home. Rather than the very simple-minded, one game one subject model that most of these learning toys use the games are graduated so that they get gradually more complex and the concepts build logically on one another. He actually seems to be learning from this game, where so many of the kids learning tools seem to subscribe to the education as "trained pony tricks" models.
Someone else mentioned that they found the British accent off-putting, but our son didn't seem to have a problem with it. The actor speaks clearly and doesn't use any inscrutable slang that we've noticed.
We've decided that this is the one we'll try for second grade.

Little Monster At School Review

Little Monster At School

I was worried with the many comments made by others who were unable to get this book to run on a newer operating system. On Window's XP the CD would not open so I followed the example from the software company following these steps:
First create a folder on your hard drive called Living books. Then create another folder within Living books folder titled "Little Monster at School". Open C drive and go to the DVD drive holding the CD, right click and open with explore. Copy the contents of the CD to the new folder on the hard drive. Find the file that is the application file (look for the iron of the monster). Right click, choose properties, select the compataility tab, change this to Windows 2000, Check the blocks for 256 color mode and 640 X 480 screen size. Click apply and close. Right click on the application icon again and select Send to Desktop (shortcut). Everything should work fine now without the use of the CD. Do this for ALL Living Books in newer operating systems...from windows XP and up.
I know this is alot of work but the books are worth the time. My kids love them all! Wish they'd write more! This story is very interactive and enjoyable!

Jumpstart 3D Virtual World: The Legend of Grizzly McGuffin Review

Jumpstart 3D Virtual World: The Legend of Grizzly McGuffin

The post above is not correct....when installing this, they link you to their website and OFFER you the chance to subscribe for $8/month or $40-ish/year, which allows you to download and play EVERY jumpstart game (rather than purchasing each one at a store for $10-$20 per game). However, they don't require it. If you just skip this step and close out of the web browser, the game installs and plays as a standalone game. I just installed it yesterday without subscribing, but my little girl (4) seems to love it so much already that I'm thinking of subscribing for a month and seeing how it goes from there...
