Tortoise and the Hare Review

Tortoise and the Hare

My 7-year old autistic daughter loves this game.
We stumbled onto it originally in a "preview", included in some Arthur CD-ROM's, and I went and bought a used copy of the real thing.
She will play for hours, clicking on things and making them interact all over the place. She laughs hysterically sometimes, making the hare stumble through mud etc.

Little Monster At School Review

Little Monster At School
Average Reviews:

I was worried with the many comments made by others who were unable to get this book to run on a newer operating system. On Window's XP the CD would not open so I followed the example from the software company following these steps:
First create a folder on your hard drive called Living books. Then create another folder within Living books folder titled "Little Monster at School". Open C drive and go to the DVD drive holding the CD, right click and open with explore. Copy the contents of the CD to the new folder on the hard drive. Find the file that is the application file (look for the iron of the monster). Right click, choose properties, select the compataility tab, change this to Windows 2000, Check the blocks for 256 color mode and 640 X 480 screen size. Click apply and close. Right click on the application icon again and select Send to Desktop (shortcut). Everything should work fine now without the use of the CD. Do this for ALL Living Books in newer operating systems...from windows XP and up.
I know this is alot of work but the books are worth the time. My kids love them all! Wish they'd write more! This story is very interactive and enjoyable!

One Bean (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Review

One Bean (Turtleback School and Library Binding Edition)

"One Bean" is a terrific book that teaches children about plant cycles. The illustrations are charming and show exactly what happens to the bean throughout the growing process. The back of the book also gives follow-up activity suggestions. Someone gave this book to me with a packet of bean seeds attached, which is also a great way to present the book to a child or teacher.

Paul Bunyan Review

Paul Bunyan
Average Reviews:

Esther Shephard knows how to spin a yarn. These stories sound so conversational that they're great to read aloud or in one's head. Young or old, anyone interested in American folklore should pick up a copy of this book. It may not be suited for the youngest of kids (there is one part where somebody's brains come out, but then the cook replaces them with batter), but it is very enjoyable and overall very tame. Two thumbs up!

My son and I love reading this book. With its beautiful cadences and lovely rhythms, it makes a nice story about choosing your holiday pumpkin--your perfect pumpkin--and it captures the flavors and textures and smells of fall in just that special way. A book filled with pumpkins that gently and beautifully captures the imagination of your young child and the deep inner glow they get when their pumpkin is glowing in the night.

This book grasped the interest of my 3 and 6 year olds because of its lovely verse, delicious illustrations and games of guessing the garden creatures and flowers. We borrowed it from the library and have read it so many times, we are buying it from Amazon. A must have for our library for now and later!

My Spring Robin (Aladdin Picture Books) Review

This is one of the cutest books that I have bought for my daughter. When she was 2 1/2 she memorized this book by heart and it was so cute to hear her say "forsythia bush". She is now 4 and it continues to be one of her favorites. We look forward to spring and now she can identify the plants on her own. Thanks for such a cute book!

Filippo's Dome Review

Filippo's Dome
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent book, very well written and with nice black and white drawings, suggestive of woodcuts. It describes, in accessible terms but with good technical insight, Brunelleschi's figuring out how to build the first free-standing dome since antiquity, by going to Rome to study the Pantheon (the only such dome to survive from classical times). It is historically very reliable, and reads very well. This book should be brought back into print; it is a classic and it would sell, especially after adults have read the recent

A math reader that does what it purports to do -- teach fractions.
The book teaches both pictorially and through the words... it rhymes... it makes sense... and I even like the illustrations.
Thank you to Joy Hulme, who knocked this one out of the park! Well done.

Mary Clare loves to share. If there's food around, Mary Clare fairly divides it up and shares it with her friends and family, no matter how many there are! This rhythmic, rhyming reader clearly demonstrates the concept of fractions in a bouncy and sweet--and savory--way!

Open the Door to Liberty Review

Open the Door to Liberty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gaou-Guinou and Pauline didn't have much hope for their "skinny, puny baby boy." In fact they didn't think he was going to live. A prophetic, "African-born slave" had predicted big things for this child, but it was obvious she was mistaken. When Francois-Dominique Toussaint (later named L'Ouverture) was a boy he didn't like being called "Little Stick" by his peers, but perhaps that was the type of taunting that shaped his character. His godfather noticed that he was "remarkably intelligent" and began to tutor him. Toussaint, as he was called, saw how cruelly some slaves were treated.
He was a thoughtful young boy and he read about Raynal, who predicted "one day a leader would rise up from slavery" and lead his people. The young boy began to dream that he would be that leader. When he was thirty-three, his master freed him. He was intrigued by "liberty, equality, and brotherhood," but it wasn't until he was almost fifty that he would begin to lead his people in battle. Toussaint "had led the first triumphant slave rebellion in history," but there were things on the horizon that could not have been foretold. The "Man of Destiny," Napoleon, had his eyes set on St. Domingue. He wanted to get rid of Toussaint and restore slavery by force. Could this little man survive the wrath of a man as driven as himself? Would slavery once again visit the island?
This was a fascinating biography of an unsung hero who deserves to be remembered around the world. St. Domingue, now Haiti, is a country that is seldom discussed in classrooms outside of geography lessons. Toussaint L'Ouverture, according to the author, struck her as a "genuine hero, only not myth or legend, but recorded history." After reading this marvelous biography, one in which she seemed to capture his personality, I would concur. This biography would be a wonderful stepping stone for student reports. In the back of the book is a list of several resources Rockwell used that could be used by the more serious student.

The Portmanteau Book Review

The Portmanteau Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like the other reviewers, I thought I had imagined this book, one of my favorites from the local library when I was a kid. I was very excited when I was able to locate a copy. Yes, it is a very interesting and unique puzzle book... But I think I can guess why no publisher is bringing it back into print. In today's society, where there is increasing concern about children's violence, there may be many people who would object to several items in the book. For instance, the cookbook section describes in detail how to capture a bratty little sister, tie her up and "pretend" to eat her for a meal (Boiled Kvetch)... How to scare a pretty girl who is teasing you with sticky syrup (Candied Peach), or how to add a dead mouse to spinach (Infested Spinach). Standard fare from Rockwell, the guy who taught us all how to Eat Fried Worms, but there would certainly be some child in America who will actually try out some of Rockwell's suggestions, landing the author and publisher in some sort of lawsuit. So, Parents, if these kinds of things worry you, DO NOT GET THIS BOOK FOR YOUR KIDS. On the other hand, its a great book for grownups to enjoy.

What's So Bad About Gasoline?: Fossil Fuels and What They Do (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) Review

What's So Bad About Gasoline: Fossil Fuels and What They Do (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2)
Average Reviews:

Yes, this book makes some valid points about fuel consumption and it is done in a good format it overall misses the mark. It really should change the title into Fuel and Global Warming. I found it went a little too much into global warming and offered only limited solutions. It also basically blames global warming on primarily cars which is a falsehood. It does mention factories as a source as well but not nearly enough. It never says word one about airplanes as being a source of carbon emmisons though they are a significant factor. I would pass this book by in wanting to have your child learn about fossil fuels. Also, my child seemed pretty bored with it so not a winner in my household.

How to Get Fabulously Rich (Red Apple) Review

How to Get Fabulously Rich (Red Apple)
Average Reviews:

How to Fight a Girl is a great book with lots of activities in it. This book is one of the best books I ever read because it has people causing mischief, getting dirty, and a little fighting.
I liked this book because it's a very exciting book just like How to Eat Fried Worms. This book has people spraying wipped-craem on windows; that reads BF+Am, Billy+Amy, or Billy Forrester+Amy Miller. The book has a trail bike that Billy rides with Amy, and Billy and Amy kiss in the chapter called Super Girl. If you want to know the rest you should read How to Fight a Girl.
I recommend this book. Out of 1-6, I give it a 5.50 because it has great word choice. I think kids 9 and up can read this book because I think it would be a little complicated for kids at the age of 8 and under. How to Fight a Girl is a super book and if you ever read it I think you will enjoy it.
