Elementary School Learning System 2007 (Win/Mac) Review

My 1st grade daughter watched the horrible videos for about 5 minutes before becoming bored and wanting to do something, anything, else. The videos are like something I would have seen in the 70's. Definitely not up to the kids of todays standards.
I would not recommend this program.

Scrabble 3 Complete Review

This version of Scrabble not only allows the expected muli-player games and games against the computer at various skill levels, but also allows games between computers on a local area network, as well as over the Internet. The built-in dictionary is good, although it's missing a some words (e.g., ki, kis, qi & qis) that are included in the Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary, 4th Edition. As near as I can tell, 166,184 of the 267,751 words recognized by SOWPODS (anagram of two acronyms: OSW (Official Scrabble Words) OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) - the word list used in tournament Scrabble in most countries except the USA, Thailand and Canada) are in the Scrabble Complete Dictionary. Too bad, definitions are not included; so you should still have a dictionary handy. There is a custom dictionary capability and it seems to work except for a bug: if you give it words of 15 characters (more can't fit across a Scrabble board), when it reviews the custom dictionary (described in the manual), it will strip off the last characters causing it to accept any resulting miss-spellings. The Internet and network play features work fine, but do not allow more than one player on each computer. I have not tried to see if it allows a network game that includes connections on both Internet and network. I have not had any problems running the program under Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional. There appears to be a minor bug in the video driver when switching back to it using Alt+Tab, but if the Scrabble screen doesn't come back, just use the mouse to paint it back (you'll see what I mean if you experience it). Too bad the game doesn't use a Window instead of full screen only. Even if it has been installed on the computer, you must have the CD in a drive to start the game. Once the game is started, the CD can (but need not) be removed. The overall menu system is a bit clumsy. You must often first click on your selection, making it yellow, and then on Okay (2 clicks, where one would have sufficed). The program also has a chat and sound capability for network and Internet use that is cute.

Kid CAD Review

We just got this and are still trying to figure it all out. We all loved the idea of building something, decorating it, furnishing it and then blowing it up! My only and main complaint is that it's too little. I want bigger pieces, they're all so small. A great idea though and maybe the next one will be BIGGER. My kids are 8 & 10 and they're having fun with it.

Hi, I'm StoryMaker, and I'm a big fan of educational software. They tend to be very fun and challenge my mind. ClueFinders Search & Solve Adventures for ages 9-12 is no exception. The main thing it teaches is logic and problem solving. Now, this isn't anything like Pajama Sam or Putt-Putt. It is more advanced and, in my opinion, more educational - and for older kids, probably more fun. It's full of fun, mind-challenging puzzles. In one of my favorites, you must free up a vending machine robot's circuits by placing shapes in the spaces that are clogged. Each row has a certain shape and each column a certain color, but you don't know what they are, so with a little luck and lots of logic, you must determine which shapes to use in a number of tries. In another, try your hand at a paintball game to choose which symbol is differnet (this actually was one of the more annoying ones). In another, place cars into the robotic car wash in a certain way using hints like "yellow cars above purple cars" and "all cars with a flag must be beside a car with a horn". Playing these games earns you parts of keys, which you need to progress in the game. Progressing in the game results in different fun puzzles. There actually aren't THAT many different kinds of puzzles total, but they're so fun & challenging, it doesn't really matter. The storyline, which is very interesting, is a bit better if you've played other ClueFinders games and know the characters; I reccommend you start with a grade-based ClueFinders game. Overall, a great game to excercize your mind. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!" P.S. Try other ClueFinders games, and JumpStart games too.

Bailey's Book House Review

I love this program. I used to work with disabled children and this cd was a very effective teaching tool that the kids enjoyed. The concepts are presented in an entertaining manner so that the children learn while playing. The typewriter game shows the letter in either alphabetical format or true typewriter format, which makes the program also useful for older children. You can select the degree of difficulty making it appropriate for a wide range of ages and IQ levels. I highly recommend it to parents looking for a fun way for their children to learn.
