MONOPOLY 3D Review

MONOPOLY 3D

I bought this at the store from the clearance rack for $3.99, and it's not even worth that. First of all, even though you download the software onto your computer, you still need to insert the cd into the computer each time you play. Secondly, the game play with computer opponents is terrible. You can choose from three different skill levels for the computer opponent. The more advanced their skill level, the higher the probaility that the computer opponent will have more favorable rolls, and a higher probability you will have less favorable rolls. This is too bad because I bought the game so my son could play by himself. That being said, the layout is nice, and game play with two or more individuals is nice, but the rating is for the unit as a whole. Skip this cd and buy a different Monopoly cd.

Monopoly 3 Review

What can you say about Monopoly? It is quite simply a classic board game. But board games don't always translate well to the PC. A monitor is not a game board, and keyboards sometimes get between a player and the game. However, Monopoly, with its reliance on strategy, translates pretty well to PC.
My first Monopoly PC game was originally written for DOS, and I played the Windows 3.1 version. I decided to buy this new version for my Windows XP machine. The multimedia effects, while better, aren't as cutting-edge as the older version was. The only people who'll be amazed are those who have been living in a cave for the past five years.
What is new are the voices. The older version had lots of sound effects - sometimes just to make noise. In this version, not only do the tokens make appropriate noises, they talk as well. What they say is appropriate. The dog, for example, when landing on a property he owns states that it "smells like home." However they only have so many phrases to repeat, and it doesn't take long for them to become annoying.
There is also a narrator doing play by play, including reading the Chance and Community Chest cards drawn. The narration is complete enough that visually impaired folks may actually find this to be an acceptable game. It certainly is better in this regard than it's previous version, but you still can't feel the board projected on the monitor, nor can you do things like count your money out loud, so not all the challenges have been overcome.
The animations in my older version consisted mostly of little clips that played during the token movements. They added nothing to the game play. While they were fascinating, and fairly advanced for the time, once you saw them each, there was no reason to not turn them off. This version is different.
In this version during game play the board is rotated, tilted, and zoomed in and out of to allow you to see what's going on. But it can be a little disorienting at first. Imagine playing the low-tech board version of Monopoly without a chair, moving around the table while you play. It's easy to loose track of which side of the board you're looking at! But it does allow you to see what's going on, and who owns what better than some of your other tools.
Speaking of tools, there is a calculator available that can do things like estimate your potential earnings, and other statistical functions. But if you're really into that sort of thing, you'll find it's a bit limiting in what it can do, and can't handle the "what-if's" the strategist may want to know.
The biggest drawback is the speed of the game during trades. You need to think fast, and you don't get much opportunity to gather more information when a trade is proposed. I would suggest not worrying about the time. Let it expire. Take your time, and then go back and propose it as a new trade.
If you like playing Monopoly, and either want to play against computer generated AI players, or on-line against opponents far away, this game is a must. If the only way you play Monopoly is with live people surrounding a table, the multimedia effects of this game won't replace that social interaction, but you might find this game to be a fun way to practice between parties.
The bottom line: There's room for improvement in future versions, but this is a pretty good PC implementation of a board game classic.

Scrabble 3 Complete Review

Scrabble 3 Complete

This version of Scrabble not only allows the expected muli-player games and games against the computer at various skill levels, but also allows games between computers on a local area network, as well as over the Internet. The built-in dictionary is good, although it's missing a some words (e.g., ki, kis, qi & qis) that are included in the Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary, 4th Edition. As near as I can tell, 166,184 of the 267,751 words recognized by SOWPODS (anagram of two acronyms: OSW (Official Scrabble Words) OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) - the word list used in tournament Scrabble in most countries except the USA, Thailand and Canada) are in the Scrabble Complete Dictionary. Too bad, definitions are not included; so you should still have a dictionary handy. There is a custom dictionary capability and it seems to work except for a bug: if you give it words of 15 characters (more can't fit across a Scrabble board), when it reviews the custom dictionary (described in the manual), it will strip off the last characters causing it to accept any resulting miss-spellings. The Internet and network play features work fine, but do not allow more than one player on each computer. I have not tried to see if it allows a network game that includes connections on both Internet and network. I have not had any problems running the program under Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional. There appears to be a minor bug in the video driver when switching back to it using Alt+Tab, but if the Scrabble screen doesn't come back, just use the mouse to paint it back (you'll see what I mean if you experience it). Too bad the game doesn't use a Window instead of full screen only. Even if it has been installed on the computer, you must have the CD in a drive to start the game. Once the game is started, the CD can (but need not) be removed. The overall menu system is a bit clumsy. You must often first click on your selection, making it yellow, and then on Okay (2 clicks, where one would have sufficed). The program also has a chat and sound capability for network and Internet use that is cute.

ZOOMBINIS LOGICAL JOURNEY Review

This game is really old, I loved it ten years ago. I enthusiastically recommend the game content to virtually anyone, anywhere. However, the other reviewer and this site neglect to mention that this is a very old version of the game that only works properly on Windows 95 and 98. If you have a computer with Windows Me, NT, XP, or Vista, this version of this game will cause big problems. There's a newer version of the game being sold elsewhere on Amazon, which I also reviewed.

This group of three games is wonderful. They are just like playing the actual board games, but with more ease. The sounds and colors make playing more exciting, too. You can play alone, with the computer, or with friends. The price is great, also. You won't regret buying these; this package is a great value. Online versions of just one cost more than the price of these three.

These are exactly like the board games with minimal sound effects added. Many computer versions of favorite board games that we have tried have some fun add-ons to the standard version, but not these. We are not avid computer gamers and do not play on-line games, but I expected a bit more than this offers. This is probably best for a young child or someone new to computer gaming.

You get seven games: checkers, chess, backgammon, parcheesi, dominoes, connect 4 and pente (Sort of like connect 5). The a.i. is good. Too good sometimes. I think it might cheat. But it's an o.k. purchase. Would have liked more games, of course. It's good for a stocking stuffer.

MySims Review

MySims
Average Reviews:

I bought this game for myself originally, but it was not long before my oldest child was asking me to buy a copy for the kids' computer. This is the fist non-educational game I have bought for my kids and they really like it. They "won" the game after about 1 month, but it is made to where you can just keep playing after achieving the main goal.
We can visit each other in our 'gardens' and it is still safe in a way that no one else can visit with my kids. It is a super cute and clean game and has actually taught my oldest how to read/spell a few words.
I especially like the workshop tasks, they are fun to do even for adults and I think teaches good skills to kids. The workshop was a little too hard at first, but you know how kids are - it was no time before they were making elaborate stuff for the townspeople.
You can change the appearance and voice of your character at any time in the game and the kids like that a lot. I think it is novel, but only interesting the first couple times.
I enjoyed playing the game, but got bored with it after a couple weeks. My kids are still going strong, playing as often as I will let them. If it were just me, I might give it only 3 or 4 stars, but accounting for my kids and how much they love it, I am giving it 5.

Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection Review

Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection is the video game my daughter was waiting for.
A quick overview: In the original Zoo Tycoon, you are in control of a Zoo building scheme, similar to other "tycoon" games on the market. The original game had many animals and features, and allowed you to solve problem scenarios and create you own free form Zoo. However, I thought the original Zoo Tycoon had rather limited selections for the money.
In the first expansion pack, Zoo Tycoon Dinosaur Digs, they went a little way to solving the limitations by giving you Dinosaurs to create your own version of "Jurassic Park". It also added (finally!) some themed concessions to make your Dino park even more of a time travelling adventure. But, it too was fairly expensive for an expansion.
In the second expansion pack, Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania, "Sea World" type attractions were added, along with some new theming concessions and other things that went a long way to solving the problems of the original limits of the game.
For a long while, some other additions were only available online. Several Endangered animals and some weird ones like Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster took quite a bit of download time to add to your park creation capabilities.
But now, in Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection, we have a truly complete collection. Not only is the original Zoo Tycoon included, but the Dinosaur Digs expansion, the Marine Mania expansion, =and= all of the previously only available by download material.
The added feature of being able to see a few facts about your animals in a special window could make this game an educational experience. Making sure your animals have the proper terrain teaches that animals prefer the environment they originally lived in, and may help reinforce people's thoughts to preserving the few endangered animals that are in the wild.
I'm almost a Tycoon game addict, I love this package. I've played this so much I can see it in my sleep. I really enjoyed the effort the company made to include the previously downloadable only material. The four sections of the game crate a truly complete collection, just as advertised.
When considering Christmas presents for children, or a special treat for tycoon game loving adults, I find myself telling people about Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection, where I never did while it was all available in separate parts. Former fans of Zoo Tycoon will enjoy the fact that everything's included. New players will enjoy the easy scenarios, while experienced Tycooners will have the real tough problem scenarios they love. Highly recommended.

Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst Review

Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst

I honestly have nothing bad to say about the full series of MCF games (Prime Suspects, Huntsville, etc.) but Ravenhearst is by far the best one. Beautiful graphics, fun in between games and a spooky storyline really sets this apart from the other seek and find games on the market.
If you aren't familiar with seek and find games, in a nutshell there is a picture (often a scene of a room) and you are given a list of specific items to find within that picture. Although that might sound easy, the illustrators can be very tricky in their placement of the item, so that it almost blends into the picture. It is very addictive and very fun, if you find the right game, and trust me, this is the right game.
So even if it's not Halloween and you are just in the mood for something a little spooky, try it out. You'll be amazed when you look up at the clock and realize how long you have been playing for, and how you still don't want to stop.

The Price is Right Review

The Price is Right
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the years, we've seen classic game shows that have delivered as computer games. These past years, the classic standouts like Jeopardy!, Wheel Of Fortune, and Family Feud have continued to deliver not just to hard core fans, but anyone who is interested in nostalgia. However, we've started to see new game shows finally make it to the P.C. including Deal Or No Deal, and Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? But, with all the different game shows, The Price Is Right has definitely been one of the most difficult to deliver as a video game. The longtime show which has dominated for over 35 years on CBS with Bob Barker and recently with Drew Carey, has continued to deliver to fans all over, but has been absent from delivering as a home game so many times. Now, a new video game edition of The Price Is Right is available for the computer for the first time in over 20 years, since the Commodore 64 days. However, does it really allow gamers to say Come On Down!, or just down in out?
The Price Is Right for the P.C. brings the classic game show to computers everywhere. The long-running game shows show well in polish and graphics by bringing the classic studio and game design during the Bob Barker era well, and showcases a distinctive style top to bottom. The game includes a dozen games to the home computer including long-running favorites like Plinko, Cliff Hangers, Shell Game and It's In The Bag. While the graphics look great, and the sound brings back the classic theme song well, there are a few faults to the game that miss the mark well. While the game looks great, there are a few problems that miss the mark. First of all, there is a lack of pricing games on the video game. While there are the popular games here, with over 70 games on the show, you don't have other great games like Grand Game, Barker's Bargain Bar, Pathfinder, and recent games like Stack The Deck and More Or Less in the rotation. Not only that, but in the game you don't have Bob Barker or Drew Carey deliver the work of the host. Instead, you have Price's announcer Rich Fields takeover the position on the game. While Rich works well, but for a game that wasn't a computer game for longtime fans since the 80's, there just should've been more to get the gamers interested.
All in all, The Price Is Right isn't a bad video game for the P.C. and fairs adequately for those who haven't seen the great CBS game show. But, I was just hoping that there could've been a whole lot more to makeup as a video game after a long absence from the market. But, for the price itself, it isn't completely right, but a decent try.
Graphics: B
Sound: B+
Gameplay: C+
Fun & Enjoyment: C for solo player; C+ for multiplayer
Overall: C+
