Grand Theft Auto Review

In the editorial review it mentions that you cannot save during a level and that you have to use your windows key to get back into windows to work unless you want to spend a few hours at a time on the game. This is completely untrue. While you cannot save during a mission, you can save during a level. Missions can be short or long but once you complete one you can save. I have little faith in the reviewer for not realizing that saves are achieved by going to a designated save location in the city... after completing the first mission you learn this. He must have been looking for a menu save option that does not exist and apparently did not spend a whole lot of time actually playing this game.

We purchased this item thinking it was "Special" but in fact it is a demo. Though no where on the box or in the information does it indicate that it is a demo. We were ripped off.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point Review

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point

Where to start, I was expecting much from the addon to the great game FEAR. Instead you get little. They reused much of the same textures, dark area's, and characters from the original.
No new characters to speak off,non exsistent story line even weaker than the first. You will have a hard time finding much new here.
The game is far too short, you can finish in about 3-5 hours, and its too easy, even on the hardest setting.Ohh and to top it off it adds nothing to multiplayer at all, no new levels, characters or weapons, not even a new mode.
If you never bought the original, you can have the multiplayer for free! Truly there is no reason to pick this up at all. The game is still fun in the way the first game was fun, but feels less like an expansion and more like the last few levels they left out of the game :(.
Not worth 30 dollars in anyway shape or form. Best to wait and buy in the bargin bin for 10 dollars or less. In other words don't support developers who put this kind of "stuff" out at almost full game price, its a rippoff at best.
We need to Show big companies Like EA, Activision, and Vivendi that its not alright to rip us off, the only thing they understand is not buying their products. I finished this the first night I bought it in 3.5 hours of none too exciting gameplay. Then you can uninstall and use as a coaster, an expensive coaster.

Far Cry (Jewel Case) Review

Far Cry (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
2004 was a good year for FPS games. Both HALF LIFE 2 and FAR CRY were released. Whereas DOOM III and QUAKE IV came and went - mostly unnoticed, these two were here to stay. Nevertheless, whereas HL2 eventually got to my nerves with the whole STEAMed-permission-to-play-for-30-minutes blunder, FAR CRY was the game I loved the most and replayed again and again.
The graphics are just amazing! HL2 may have crisp and clear textures too, however, FAR CRY's are also realistic and detailed even at maximum resolution. The controls are intuitive and remapable - and take the character (Jack Carver) precisely where you want him. Running is fast and crawling is effectively silent. When greater distances are to be covered, vehicles are available to commandeer.
The weapons are beautiful: a mix of real and futuristic improvements. Ammo is never really a problem (well, with the exception of the Sniper rifle bullets and the RPG loads when they would really tip the balance in your favor) and, most importantly, the damage they inflict is TRULY BALANCED: both enemies and player go down with about the same amount of damage (you would be surprised on how many games this is not true - STALKLER for one...).
The story is interesting, the locales truly breathtaking and the horizon the further you have ever seen in any game! True free roaming is not actually available (try to round an island with a speedboat to circumvent same stubborn enemies and a black helicopter will chop you to pieces), however the taste is at the tip of your tongue the whole time.
The sounds and music have been worked on with care and they maximize the gaming experience.
My only (minor) objection focuses on the battles with the mutants: FAR CRY features one of the best enemy AI ever encountered. I truly savored battling human AIs - but was apprehensive when another mutant segment was coming up. The game is so realistic that it truly shines in real environments and opponents. Then again, it never lets you get bored either...
I am not an easy costumer (check out my other reviews, you will see what I mean...); nevertheless,
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

MySims Review

MySims

I bought this game for myself originally, but it was not long before my oldest child was asking me to buy a copy for the kids' computer. This is the fist non-educational game I have bought for my kids and they really like it. They "won" the game after about 1 month, but it is made to where you can just keep playing after achieving the main goal.
We can visit each other in our 'gardens' and it is still safe in a way that no one else can visit with my kids. It is a super cute and clean game and has actually taught my oldest how to read/spell a few words.
I especially like the workshop tasks, they are fun to do even for adults and I think teaches good skills to kids. The workshop was a little too hard at first, but you know how kids are - it was no time before they were making elaborate stuff for the townspeople.
You can change the appearance and voice of your character at any time in the game and the kids like that a lot. I think it is novel, but only interesting the first couple times.
I enjoyed playing the game, but got bored with it after a couple weeks. My kids are still going strong, playing as often as I will let them. If it were just me, I might give it only 3 or 4 stars, but accounting for my kids and how much they love it, I am giving it 5.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 Review

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After many of the 'Tycoon' style games that have been popular over the last few years, the reigning king was a simple family style game called Roller Coaster Tycoon. After two successful expansion packs, developer Chris Sawyer waited well over a year to launch Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. The sequel is based on a no brainer..."Build it and they will come". Seeing that the first game and its expansions still sell well, Infogrames already has a large base of built in fans looking for more of the same, but will these fans love '2', and will this attract new fans? Time will tell.
Overall, the look and feel of the game remains relatively the same. A 3D isometric overhead view allows players to build a theme park from scratch and carry it through pre-defined scenarios. These scenarios have conditions such as have a park rating of X by year Y or have X guests by year Y or build N coasters of type T with an excitement factor of X.
The game ships with about 25 scenarios that are grouped in categories of difficulty: easy, advanced, expert, and Real Parks. The website RollercoasterTyccon2.com promises to have future downloadable scenarios, and one major enhancement over the original game is the inclusion of a scenario editor. Players can now create their own parks/games and trade among friends. You can control all variables from size of park, weather, rides available for research and more.
The 'Real Parks' are actual Six Flag parks from around the world that are pretty close to real world counterparts. You can choose to just manage them or alter them at will.
Game enhancements:
1) Park sizes can be double that of the original game and it supports a much higher screen resolution rate.
2) Scenery: All the original scenery from the RCT and its expansions are present as well as new ones including: Pirate, Scary, Medieval, Gears, Wild West, Giant Gardens and more. There are also more fences, water themes, roofs and walls and the ability to stack scenery makes it much easier to create buildings.
3) New rides: Well obviously there are more coasters but also other attractions as well on top of all the originals.
4) Coaster and ride options: There seems to be much more customizations available for coasters including new car types, special banks, queue line options, supports, signs & banners, special track types and more.
5) New shops and stalls: Again, all the originals and more including sun glass hut, ATM's, First Aid station, more food choices.
6) More music options. Many more styles of music can accompany your rides.
7) Coaster construction: Tool here has been revamped and now you can make/test/save/see coasters better than ever.
Now not everything is perfect in this game:
1) Graphics: Even though the screen resolution and park size has increased, the view is still the same as is the graphics engine. While there is more 'eye-candy' per-se, the overall look is still cartoony and has some 'jaggy' issues. Not to mention that hills, waters, mountains still look slightly un-natural as it did in the original.
2) Lack of scenarios that ship. There are only 3 easy scenarios, a handful of advanced, and more expert. This may prove complex for players who never had the first. Hopefully new ones will be available from the official website soon.
3) No major innovations in game play. I'd like to see new objectives, or disasters to overcome, or new behaviors of park guests, mechanics, handymen, mascots...still the same.
The largest adjustment fans of the original will have to make is getting use to the new construction and customization tools. While they have been expanded (a large plus), they have also taken on new 'handling' characteristics which is proving somewhat confusing for me. For old players, it's retraining how to this new interface and sub-menus...lacking in the 1st game. While this new interface does seem to be much more rich and deep, I truly found it wasn't as intuitive as the RCT 1. I was looking for information that seemed to be present in the 1st game easily, now I have to dig to sub-menus I'm not familiar with.
These were some of the reasons I chose o give it 4 stars instead of 5. Something's are just better off simple, not overly complex.

Gangsters Review

Gangsters
Average Reviews:

This is a great game. It is fun, intense and takes much thought. The premise is a 1920's generic city that is loaded with gangsters. Your job is to run a crime syndicate and take over the city by defeating the other crime organizations, aquiring much wealth and owning a lot of property. The game is fun to play but it can be slow sometimes and a little repetitive. The game takes thinking too and isn't just a "run-around, shoot 'em up." You must negotiate with other crime bosses and pay off city officals. Making hits is great as well as bombing buildings. The game is surprisingly realistic and has much detail. Besides the fact that the game can be slow at the times, I highly recommend it. I wish I could give it a 4 1/2 stars. If your interested in the Mafia and some strategy, I highly recommend purchasing this game.

Activision Anthology Remix (Mac) Review

Activision Anthology Remix (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gamers of my generation (thirtysomething), among others, fondly remember the Atari 2600 console. Come on, you remember it - the black joystick with the bright red button, the black console with four switches and a slot for game cartridges... the clicks, bleeps and bloops of games like Pitfall, Atlantis and Megamania: A Space Nightmare? If you do, then the Activision Anthology will bring a smile to your face; among the many other recent efforts to revive classic video games, MacPlay has published this collection of 75 games for the retro gamer in all of us.
So with a certain nostalgia, I installed and fired up the Anthology, and I was a bit surprised at the main menu: a fairly good approximation of the room of the neighbor kid in my neighborhood who actually had an Atari. (Well, the actual room wasn't so clean, with quite a few more pop cans strewn about.) Also surprisingly, the main screen greets you with some appropriately retro music - in my case, "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Project. The music plays on as you choose and play a game from the rack; it's all tongue-in-cheek, of course, with tracks from my middle school days by groups like 'A Flock of Seagulls and' 'Whodini.'
The game emulation is perfect, except that you don't have to load up cartridges and flick that reset switch, and in a very short time I found myself trying to remember if you get more treasure faster in Pitfall by starting off running to the left, and if the underground shortcuts were worth the effort it took to jump over the scorpions. Of course, I don't have the old black joystick I was used to, although you can hook up a modern stick if you wish (I don't have one, and just used my keyboard).
So, you ask yourself, aren't these old games too easy and slow... don't they get boring quickly? The programmers have taken an interesting approach to this concern by mixing up these old school, aggressively blocky-looking games: if you wish, you can play the games in various "enhanced" game modes to up the challenge. For example, if, like me, you find Demon Attack too easy, you can set the game to play in "cube" mode, in which the game is set onto the faces of a spinning cube in the middle of the screen. As the manual says, "only the most mentally dexterous player will be able to compensate for the movements." Umm, yeah. There are several other modes that distort and add to the visuals of the original game ("disco," "bungee," and a stomach-turning mode dubbed "whirl," among many others).
Additionally, you can save games, keep high scores, and as you play along you can even unlock "patches" of previous versions.
My overall impression? MacPlay continues to impress me with their willingness to release a broad variety of titles, some quite mainstream and popular (the Baldur's Gate series, the supremely classic Fallout series) as well as games like this with pure retro appeal. True, some of these details of products like this will be lost on all but the true aficionado, but obviously none of these games are meant to compete graphically with modern offerings - this is a product intended for the old-school gamer who wants to resurrect a bit of gaming history, with a few new twists.
I encountered no bugs in my use of the Anthology, although the main screen interface takes some getting used to and isn't always intuitive, as it mainly employs the arrow keys and has none of the point-and-click mentality that we Mac users not only expect but, well, have encoded in our DNA. I find the collection to be an overall well-done offering; the added details do bring an enjoyable and added nostalgia to these games. The system requirements (400 Mhz G4) are modest, and the price is appropriate. I recommend this anthology for anyone who, like me, grew up in the arcades of the 80's and loves to emulate old games on modern hardware.
