DORA THE EXPLORER BACKPACK ADVENTURE Review

DORA THE EXPLORER BACKPACK ADVENTURE

I have taught preschool computer lab for two years and have used this software this year as well as Dora's Lost City Adventure. My younger 3 year old students find the game a bit hard and need some assistance, but once they have the idea, they enjoy repeating the tasks over and over (which this game is definitely repetitive). My older 3 year old and 4-5 year old students will play this game for about 10 minutes and then want to move on to another game.
The one problem that I seem to have with this software is that students will easily find their way into the sticker album but then get stuck there. It takes some real effort to exit out of the sticker album because the exit button hides itself after a moment.
As a personally note, I have to listen to this software's soundtrack for 2.5 hours per day while working in the lab, and I truthfully get sick of hearing it. Other games have lots of varying music, but this one seems to play the seem music and catch phrases over and over and over and over and OVER! Luckily, since children seem to bore of this game in under 30 minutes, most home PC users won't have to put up with this problem for long.
Overall, your young Dora fan will probably enjoy this software for a short time each time you load it.
NOTE: I have successfully used this software on Windows 2000 Professional operating platform.

My children got really bored with this program. They are not allowed traditional video games yet therefore this is not a case of them comparing it to PS3 or the WII.
They played with this for a few hours and then turned it off. I really was disappointed as I remember my oldest playing with Jump Start programs at an early age and loving them!

This is absolutely horrible software. The games are good if you can get them to run. I have to remove them and reinstall them every time I run them. The graphics has to be manually set up every time the game runs or the colors are all off.

I really appreciated that all the information on the envelope was hand written. Very Nice. The game worked fine; Just as i remember it. The only thing is that newer computer might not be compatible with the game. I have Windows Vista and at 1st it didnt work on my machine, but after looking through all the files i manually installed it. Although on fullscreen, it glitches every once in awhile.

We purchased this game about 13 years ago for our first child! We now have 8 children who have all enjoyed playing it until today when we discovered that it finally broke!! This game is so much fun that it has to be replaced! It's not too hard for the 3-4 crowd with a little help, but yet challenging enough for the 5-6 crowd. It has a fun plot and extra silly jokes and games.

I am a frequent buyer of CDs for my 4 year old daughter ( I brought this one for her when she was 3). I am amazed at the multitude of mathematical, logical and other educational aspects covered (including alphabets and english) - all by incorporating the learning experience as a game. My daughter all along thinks she is playing a game, but she has to imbibe all the lessons to play. The visuals are excellant. All activities come with configurable levels - depending upon the comfort level of the user. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

Blue's Clues Preschool Review

Blue's Clues Preschool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter has had this software program for several months now. She is four years old and doesn't watch Blue's Clues that much, although she knows what it is. That's what's so amazing to me about this software, your kids don't have to sit in front of the TV for hours to know how to play it!

It strays from your typical Blue's Clues adventure of finding the 3 clues. The software runs like a virtual preschool (which she can appreciate now that she's attending one).

My favorite feature (and hers!) is how you can give your drawings and paintings away to other school "members". Then a few minutes later along comes Joe explaining that you've recieved one too!

I've found the "outside" part of the software to be very full of knowledge about animals. Children take part of a scrapbooking adventure and in the process learn many facts about different animals.

All games/tasks can be made more difficult with "leveling" so that the software never gets old.

This game is WAY better than TV!

JumpStart Phonics Review

JumpStart Phonics
Average Reviews:

The software is very user friendly, in fact my two & a half year old is able to navigate it and enjoys the activities. It teaches alphabet and words and has stories but does not really teach PHONICS per se. Great beginning tool for 3 to 5 year olds but would not expect a first grader to gain much from this product. The Jump Start products have met our expectations so far.

TLC Blue's Clues Preschool Learning System 2008 Review

TLC Blue's Clues Preschool Learning System 2008
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this game for my almost 2.5 year old daughter. She has other preschool and pre-k games that she really enjoys and can use independently. I thought I would try this game because she likes the show Blue's Clues. WOW, were we ever disappointed. First of all, the narration on every section just goes on and on and on. You can't stop the narration and you can't play until it ends. Second the setup of the game town to walk through is pretty boring and unappealing to my daughter. Third, she was not very interested in any of the little classrooms. Fourth, there are only five different stations to visit which offers little variation. Fifth, every other game she has has some little thing happen when you complete a task correctly. There are barely any things on this game like that. For example in the grocery store salt and pepper tell you to get ingrediendts for a pie, so my daughter goes and collects all of them and what happens once she does. Nothing they just tell her to start collecting to make something else. She would of been so excited to have seen a little pie being made with all the ingredients. Without that, collecting the ingredients seemed rather pointless to her. I can't really say how this game would appeal to older children, but my daughter literally hates it and she loves other jumpstart and reader rabbit preschool and pre-k games.

My 7-year old autistic daughter loves this game.
We stumbled onto it originally in a "preview", included in some Arthur CD-ROM's, and I went and bought a used copy of the real thing.
She will play for hours, clicking on things and making them interact all over the place. She laughs hysterically sometimes, making the hare stumble through mud etc.

Not one of the better phonic reading products. Not bad at all. Just surpassed by others.

Start kids off right with this completely thorough phonics program. This program teaches phonics with a systematic progression, beginning with simple animal sounds, then progressing to letter sounds. These are the first steps toward real reading. There are fun activities like Get on Track, in which kids must move Letterbod along the track to learn the correct way to form all 26 letters. In Bingo, kids compete against Mack the Mouse to boost skills, and learn to recognize consonants, vowels, and blended sounds. Kids learn phonemes--the building blocks of phonics--as they slide letter clusters and combinations into place to make more than 300 words. A special parents' section lets you customize the program to match your child's learning needs or school curriculum, and access detailed reports on your child's progress.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and loves Dora. But this game is WAY too simple for her. There just aren't enough things to do, and even the higher levels don't really challenge compared to her two other games: Care Bears and Blue's Clues. If you have a two-year-old or a child who's never played on a computer, this is great at teaching basic color, shape & number recognition and how to use a mouse & click. A better choice for a 3 - 4 year old is Blue's ABC Time Activities.

Let's Go Read 2 - An Ocean Adventure

I use this program in the computer lab at my school. It is very engaging and the learning content is perfect for first graders, struggling second graders and ESL students. It teaches phonics concepts inside of a fun adventure that the kids love. It is also easy to monitor the program to check the kids progress. You can set the game so that the children must finish one level before they can go on to the next or you can set it to allow them to move as they want to. There are also small books that you can print out and have the child read. The game will last for a long time because there are so many levels. I suggest that if you are using xp you set the preferences to 256 colors so that everything can be easily seen. There is also an earlier program for kindergarteners called "Lets go Read:1 An Island Adventure." (FYI:I am not certain if the game will work with window's Vista)

Reader Rabbit 1st Grade Review

My daughter rushed to complete all of the tasks needed to start the show. It took a period of a few weeks playing an hour at a time. She was very persistent and enjoyed creating the signs that pop up throughout the scenery. The costume-matic (which forces you to make exact change) was very good for my first grader and took some time so that she didn't exceed the amount required. However once done and we saw the show, the game leaves you unable to do anything else. We have to sign on as a new person or uninstall the game to start it over again. I'm considering trading my game with friend, so they can enjoy it.
