Prey Limited Collector's Edition Review

Prey Limited Collector's Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those of you who followed the first person shooter genre back in 1998 probably vaguely remember a game called Prey that was in development at 3D Realms. The game featured a Native American theme and a unique portal technology that allows enemies to appear out of thin air among other things. Then the game suddenly disappeared for years only to recently resurface. This new game, developed by Human Head Studios, features many of the original ideas from 1998 as well as a state-of-the-art graphics engine and fierce combat. The amount of hype surrounding the game when it was shown at E3 was enormous. Luckily, Prey manages to deliver a solid and compelling first person shooter experience.
Prey opens with the main character of the game, a Native American named Tommy, talking to himself in a bathroom mirror. He wants to take his girlfriend and leave the Indian reservation. She on the other hand doesn't want to leave. While trying to talk her into leaving, his girlfriend and his grandfather are sucked up into an alien ship. Tommy manages to get free and then sets out to rescue his girlfriend. Of course along the way he will end up saving the world.
The plot in the game is actually pretty solid. The game starts out pretty intense and things rapidly escalate and get pretty desperate. It also does a pretty good job of explaining why you of all people are the one who has been chosen to save the world. While the Native American influences are not a major part of the gameplay, it is an interesting and recurring theme in the storyline. The last few levels in the game make up one of the most intense climaxes to any first person shooter in recent memory. The ending also leaves you feeling pretty satisfied, which is a relief considering many high profile games have had disappointing endings recently. The whole game will take most people between 8 to 12 hours.
Along with a compelling plot, the game features amazing visuals. The game is powered by the Doom 3 engine (which also powered Quake 4). So the game features completely real-time lighting and shadowing and interactive GUI surfaces (control panels) like those found in Doom 3 and Quake 4. The engine has also been modified to provide other great looking effects like light bloom. The environments themselves are very detailed and are constantly animating. You really get the feeling that you are in a living spaceship.
In a way, Prey has fallen victim of its own hype. The biggest complaint that most will have with the game is of its use of portals, gravity manipulation and spirit walking. Many were expecting some revolutionary new gameplay mechanics because of these three things. Unfortunately their use doesn't do anything to drastically change the way first person shooters are played. But even though the game comes pretty short of "revolutionary", the portals and gravity manipulation keeps the game pretty fresh throughout, which is more then what other first person shooters offer these days. So while it doesn't reinvent the first person shooter, those gameplay innovations keep it from tasting stale.
The portals serve a couple of purposes. First, they allow you to move from one 3d environment to another seamlessly. Second, portals provide an interesting and fresh way for enemies to enter the environment. For example, sometimes enemies will portal in and be walking on the ceiling.
Perhaps more interesting then the portal system is what the game does with gravity. In the game you will find glowing walkways that allow you to walk up walls and even completely upside down. Even more interesting is that sometimes you will walk around a corner and gravity will completely change directions. There are also times when you will walk through rooms you have already been in but you will be on what was previously the wall or the ceiling. This keeps the battles interesting as you will be shooting down at enemies that look like they are on the ceiling, but they are really on the floor. Also, in some rooms you will have the ability to change gravity by shooting wall panels. The portals and gravity are constantly used in combination for some fun (though not very difficult) puzzles.
Tommy, because of his Native American heritage, also has the ability to leave his body and spirit walk. While in spirit form you can do things that you normally wouldn't be able to do. For example you can walk through force fields and sometimes over large gaps that would have been impossible to jump. Unfortunately, most of these sequences boil down to walking through a force field and hitting a switch on the other side to turn it off. There are a few puzzles in the game when you have to leave your body someplace and then use your spirit to move you somewhere you normally would not be able to go. However, these types of puzzles are few and far between and don't pose much of a challenge. Though you can fight enemies while in spirit form, which can be helpful when you are low on health.
Since you have this spirit walk ability, when you die you are sent to the spirit realm. The spirit realm is basically a small mini-game where you must shoot down red and blue wraiths which recharge your health and spirit energy. After a short amount of time you are sucked back into the living world pretty much exactly where you died. The amount of spirit energy and health you have depends on how well you did in the mini-game. While this is pretty unique and interesting, it has the unfortunate negative effect of making the game pretty easy. You never have to worry about saving since you in essence can't die. Perhaps it would have been better if you could actually fail at the mini-game.
Prey has a pretty good selection of weapons. While your arsenal is actually pretty small, weapons have secondary functions. Some of the weapons are alien versions of familiar weapons while others are pretty unique. One of the weapons must be powered up at stations. How the weapon behaves depends on what type of station you powered it up at.
The enemy designs in the game are pretty good overall. While there are not a ton of different looking enemy types, they all require different strategies to defeat. The AI in the game won't win any awards, but it does a good job of keeping the firefights intense and fun.
The audio in the game is pretty good. The voice acting is of pretty high quality. Unlike other games like Doom 3 or Half-Life 2, the main character in the game speaks a lot. The music score in the game, which is done by Jeremy Soule, is also pretty good. The only somewhat disappointing aspect of the sound design is the weapons themselves. While they don't sound bad by any means, they somewhat lack the punch that you would expect.
In the end, a lot of what you will get out of Prey depends on what you go in expecting. If you expect to find a revolutionary experience you will be disappointed. But if you go in with reasonable expectations, you will find a sold first person shooter with some interesting gameplay innovations that keep the game fresh and makes it stand out compared to other first person shooters.

Ultima Online: Samurai Empire Expansion Pack Review

Ultima Online: Samurai Empire Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sixth expansion pack for the 7 year old Ultima Online series is at hand. What does this mean for the many citizens of shattered Sosaria? In a word: More.
More culture. Some people have criticized the addition of an Asian themed facet claiming it doesn't fit with the primarily medieval feel of the game. I disagree. Each facet *should* have its own identity and Tokuno certainly achieves uniqueness.
More exploration. The Tokuno Islands offer a wide range of terrain from grasslands to deserts to frozen wastelands to active volcanoes. Some areas are fairly barren (no doubt intended for new housing developments), while others are rich with detail and variety.
More character customization. The addition of the Ninjitsu and Bushido skills allow players greater variety in play style. Aspiring Ninjas and Samurai will have access to many new abilities.
More creatures. The new enemies found in Tokuno are primarily based upon Asian mythology. Most are designed to be challenging even for experienced players - even powerful well equipped characters will have a hard time fighting toe to toe with some of these new creatures.
More items. A wide array of new clothing styles, weapons, armor, collectibles, etc. The ability to dual-wield certain weapons is a particularly welcome addition.
More housing. In addition to the added housing areas in Tokuno, players will have access to new tiles and add-ons when customizing their homes.
More other stuff... Various other game mechanics (such as the guild system) have also been improved. Even the much neglected virtue system has received some attention. So yes Samurai Empire is very much about making UO more than it was. But are any of the new additions truly earth shattering? Not particularly. If you are happy with UO as it is now you will no doubt be very happy with SE. If you are looking for vast changes to UO however, you won't find them here. As far as UO expansion packs go SE lives up to expectations. No more, no less.
In spite of all the additions and improvements however UO still fails to achieve one important thing: purpose. This is a failing with the vast majority of MMOGs however and not limited to UO. You are given massive worlds to explore, thousands of players to interact with, and a wide variety of options... But no purpose. Nothing you do in the game has a lasting effect, there is no epic storyline that progresses in any significant way, the virtual world and people of Sosaria remain unchanged regardless of your actions. Instead of actively challenging you, the game merely exists and expects you to amuse yourself.
It is high time for MMOGs to begin incorporating the epic nature of traditional RPGs. UO in particular has a great legacy to live up to. The original Ultima series (now 25 years old) remains the finest example of RPG gaming. Ever. Ultima X promised to bridge the gap between the genres... With UXO's untimely demise UO more than ever needs to strive for something greater.Bottom line:
Is it worth checking out for new players? Yes - as long as you don't rely on high end graphics for your gaming pleasure. There is a reason UO has been around for 7 years - there is a LOT to see and do. Whether this is your first massively multiplayer online game or you've been playing them for years UO is worth experiencing. Unlike some MMOGs UO doesn't require you to buy all the previous versions separately - every release includes ALL previous expansions. At the very least it offers you good value for your money.
Is it worth getting for current players? If you enjoy UO there is no reason not to get SE. If you've experienced the addition of previous expansion packs you already know what to expect. New landmass, new monsters, new items, new skills.
Is it worth returning to for former players? I suppose it depends on the reasons you left. If you originally quit in frustration over technical issues, SE runs with far more stability than AOS did upon release. If you quit because you felt unfulfilled with the game, SE probably won't be enough for you to return for.
It's not perfect, but it IS good.

I bought this game and have tried everything to get it to run.
It constanly kicks me out of the game when it switches from opening sceen (Angie is watching the news) and when it switches over to FBI. I made sure I had the latest drivers for my video and audio. I have downloaded the latest patch from Whiptail Interactive, which does not support this product. They instead give you an Email address to the developers over in Europe. I am still waiting to hear back from them.
I have more then the minimum requirements (3 GHz, 1 G RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro)
I have never had a game perform this badly and the lack of support is appalling.

Deadly Dozen : Pacific Theater Review

Deadly Dozen : Pacific Theater
Average Reviews:

The environmental graphics are excellent, though a little repetitive at times (the snow level is a nice touch!). The grass, trees, etc, are very impressive. The animations of your squadmates could use a little fine tuning, however. They just don't have the sense of being 'grounded' and real like in Ghost Recon, for example. Also, the framerate seems to chug at random times. It will run smooth for a while, and then slow to an unplayable rate. Turning down the detial levels doesn't help, and yuo just have to wait. It seems to happen in certain areas of cretain levels. It could, I guess, be a problem with my computer, too, but I have not seen it in any other games.
There are some pathfinding AI problems (getting stuck behind trees and rocks and such), and sometimes your guys become deaf, and don't hear your commands. The guns are cool, though I noticed the ammo usage on the Japanese machine gun is a little wierd. It sounds like its firing super fast, but it uses ammo at about the same rate as the BAR. Strange.
It is very nice to be able to use just one or two guys at a time, and leave the rest behind somewhere. However, there is one more thing here that has bugged me and prompted more than a few start-overs: when you are playing as the sniper and sneaking around, and you switch to a different guy, the sniper will often often INSTANTLY fire on an enemy you didn't see, and bring the entire Japanese army down on your posistion (the AI sniper isn't a very good shot, either).
Even with these annoyances, I still found myself playing through the missions one after another. The world is engrossing (the full bio on each character is cool) and the combat is rather intense.
Bottom line: It's not Ghost Recon of WWII, and it's not Wolfenstien Ghost Recon Style, but it is a fun game. The graphics are good, but not cutting-edge. Besides, it is one of the only games that let you fight in the Pacific Theatre. It is well worth the low $$$ price tag.

Call to Power 2 Review

Call to Power 2
Average Reviews:

I am sure a lot of players might disagree with this review but CTP 2 really has taken some steps in the right direction. If you liked CTP (1) game play interface then you will like this sequel.
The following are the major changes:
Combat - A very important change is the addition of an armor attribute to each unit. This means that the phalanx will no longer be able to stand toe to toe with a tank - it simply won't be able to do much damage even if it hits.
Stealth - Spies will let you see all approaching hidden units. While you'll still need the appropriate defense team to stop the approaching stealth unit
New units, Wonders, and Advances CTP 2 includes the City Planner, an advanced settler option that allows users to build cities that come with basic buildings already included and that have a higher population. The game also has loads of new sea units.
Diplomacy - This area is my favorite in the sequel. A completely new diplomatic model allows you to offer proposals and negotiate counter-proposals with other empires. React in friendly or hostile tones as you confront distinct opponents with more in-depth AI personalities for even more realism. Utilize all-new diplomatic options such as Borders to help define the geopolitical situation. For example, you could threaten to attack a country if they don't give you their maps.
Advances - The game will also include new Wonders of the World as well as new "Feats of Wonder." These are one time, temporary bonuses that you get for performing certain actions. For example, if you're the first person to circumnavigate the globe, you get a sea movement bonus for a few turns.
Other important changes in CTP2 are that the Space playing level has been completely removed and the game lasts from 4000BC to 2300AD (instead of 3000AD of CTP).
Overall, what are you waiting for?! Go get it...

UFO Aftershock - Altar Interactive Review

UFO Aftershock - Altar Interactive
Average Reviews:

Even though Aftershock was created in the X-com vein, it's not an X-com game and as thus, should not be compared to X-com.
Instead of talking about what was good, I'll just discuss the bad things which is a much smaller list.
The game introduces resource management, which can be really difficult. I would strongly recommend going to www.strategycore.co.uk and reading the resource management FAQ. Read all the Aftershock FAQs as well, to enhance game enjoyment.
The game is actually too long. Near the end, I pretty much stopped using strategy and just swept the mission area, killing and healing as I went. :)
Sure, there are bugs. Nothing is perfect. There are also workarounds. I finished the game long ago so I do not remember what the latest patch number is. Again, those FAQs and reading the strategycore forums will help you alot.

Graphics : Sweet. Gameplay : difficult at first, but once you understand the control scheme, you quickly get the hang of the rest. Incredible particle effects. Very well done music. Replayability : moderate to none. That's the only downside. The game has good length, and a fun idea as a plotline. But, there are not too many twists and turns plotwise, so that pulls quite a bit away from re-playability. This ran well with the minimum specs on my system : AMD XP 2800 -- 512 MG DDR RAM -- 128 MG GeFORCE 4 5600. For the sheer shooting power of the game, i would recommend it. But, don't expect extreme depth in the gameplay. Just a good bit of fun.

Tribes 2 Review

Tribes 2
Average Reviews:

You engage your cloaking pack and walk right past the enemy base defenders; unnoticed. You make your way to the enemy flag, which is guarded by 2 heavy-armored defenders. You whip out your close range shocklance and electrocute the defenders. You nab the flag and make it back to your base and score! This is just one of the many complex and varied strategies and tactics available to you in this game.
Do you like to be a defender? Setting up base turrets and sensors and waiting for enemies to come by only to be ripped to shreds by your strategically placed turrets is the job for you.
Or are you an attacker? Flying deep into enemy territory and raiding the defense, trying to weaken them as much as possible with the help of a teammate waiting not far off with a ride home for you to escape with.
Perhaps you like the stealthy approach due to your Counterstrike skills. No problem. Slap on a cloak pack and a shocklance and you can go wreak havoc on unsuspecting enemies.
Maybe your a good pilot thanks to your flight sim practice. You can fly 1 of 6 awesome vehicles. The Havoc, for example, allows you to carry 4 passengers, and a tailgunner, totalling 6 people in one vehicle. You can then unload this heavy firepower-packing group right by the enemies base for an all out offensive.
Such teamplay is necessary to succeed in Tribes 2.
The graphics engine is able to render uber-huge, neverending enviroments in real time. Seamless transitions from indoor and outdoor make for realistic and intense gameplay. The weapons and packs allow for a seemingly endless amount of tactics. This game, to put it simply, rocks. =)
Graphics and gameplay aside, there is one thing that seems to get on everyones nerves- frames per second.
Dynamix made a wonderfully gorgeous engine, but it runs like a snail on all but the top end systems. There are exeptions, but I'n not going to lie to you- you really need a serious computer to run this at good detail levels. I have a P4, GF2 Ultra, and 256MB RDRAM. I get an average of 40fps at maximum detail. I'm lucky.
I would reccomend a P3 or Athlon running at 700MHz or more, 128 megs of Ram, and any GeForce2 video card. You'll be fine with that. Anything less and you'll need to lower the settings and resolution a lot to even get playable frame rates.
But if you've got the juice, get the game. It's one of the most addictive and immersive games you may ever own. It redefines online teamplay. It is one of the few first person shooters that require brainpower.
You owe it to yourself as a gamer to have this work of art on your hard drive.
:)

I was very excited when Marvel and GIT Corp came out with these products. Now instead of collecting every single comic book you can now simply pop in a DVD-rom and get every single issue you could have ever dreamed of!!!
I am a big fan of the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer comics are simply a throw-in in which I would be happy to take. The Fantastic Four were created so amazingly like a real life family that one must give Stan Lee and Jack Kirby their due. The villains of the FF are unreal starting in issue #1 with the Mole Man and moving on with issue #4 and the Sub-Mariner. The greatest villain of the Marvel universe makes his appearance in issue #5 in the form of Dr. Doom. Doom would go on to be one of the most famous comic book villains of all time ranking up there with the Joker, Lex Luther, Darkseid, and the Green Goblin. (Also remember Star War fans that Darth Vadar's suit was influenced by Doom's). These issues also cover the famous Silver Surfer and Galactus story lines starting in issue #48. There are so many first Marvel appearances in these issues like the Skrulls, Klaw, Black Panther, Negative Zone, Blastaar, Diablo, Pyscho Man, Molecule Man, etc. that the FF simply must go down as one of the most defining comic books ever sold.
This set is amazing and any one who does not want to pay the money for every issue (start saving because thats 750 comics) this is for you!!!!

I couldn't agree more with the last reviewer comparing Sands of Time(SoT) to a "Disney movie with an edge". Even if you hated SoT you HAD to respect it for it's integrity to be itself and do what it did so well, and for standing out in a sea of titles. However we now have a sequel... and no matter how well you do on a sequel there's going to be criticism comparing it to the original. So here's the ordeal, do you rehash the first one, and have critics complain about it being more of the same, and not trying anything new... or do you try new things, and have critics complain about you ruining what was good about the first?
Warrior Within (WW) seems to be catching a lot of criticism for stepping too far away from it's predecessor... and although I am a HUGE fan of SoT, AND WW, I have to agree. The fighting system has been revamped, and blows away everything else out there... the sheer numbers of combos you can perform is mind-boggling, and being able to use your environment (spinning around poles, and rebounding off walls, as well as other characters) is more than welcome... it's just plain cool. I've more than once replayed an area just because it was "just TOO cool!" I can't say I ever did that during SoT. Although the cutscenes are done pretty well (that's saying a lot) the voice sync does lack (but aside from the Soul Reaver series there's not a lot of good out there) and the camera angles annoy. However those are small prices to pay for such a great game. And you can actually HEAR the voice overs in this one... (and just in case you still can't, there's subtitles) On it's own, people would surely give it better reviews, but since it is a sequel to it's wonderful older brother, it has A LOT to live up to.
WW does everything that SoT did wonderfully, only the feeling has really changed. I feel like I'm playing a totally different series. I have to agree that it strays too far from the great formula that MADE SoT. Overall, to play this game, I don't feel like I'm playing a Prince of Persia game. Do you want to feel like you're playing SoT again? No. You DO want to feel like you're playing a PoP game though. WW is a lot faster paced than SoT, and the fighting doesn't slow the game down like it did in SoT. I used to want to get through the fighting to get to more wall climbing and rope swinging. Now, I want to get through the wall climbing and rope swinging to get to more fighting.
All of the climbing and light puzzle solving is back, and welcomed, but running into a huge group of opponents doesn't have you saying "Come on, hurry up and die".
I don't like WW because it's the sequel to SoT, I like it because it's a great game... and I'm picky when it comes to games. I can't say "If you liked SoT then you'll LOVE WW." I can't say you'll hate it either.
I guess I'm just not too helpful.
Sands of Time is Coca-Cola. Warrior Within is New Coke. It's just up to your taste.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Review

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

This is a great RTS game. It is very entertaining and there is always a lot of stuff going on. The graphics raise the bar for this game genre. Units are rendered great. Structure building is rendered great. And even the maps a re rendered very well. Animations are awesome. Battles in general seem epic. Kudos.
There are 4 different races in this game. They all play differently. It's not like playing a new game, but you will def. have to change your strategy and use different abilities and structures when you play different races.
Gameplay overall is great and entertaining. This is an RTS game similar to Command and Conquer. If you liked CC, then you will def. like this game. It should be mentioned however, that this game is not super-strategic in the sense of Total War or Combat Missions. It is a more accessible game that is made for the gamer who wants to be entertained rather than challenged.
The missions are generally interesting, although they do get repetitive. There are only one or two campaign maps that made me alter my strategy. I often approach missions relatively slowly and focus on building up a good strike force before I go after the oponent(s). There is nothing this game does to force me to play differently (such as a time limit or a defensive mission). However, for some reason that doesn't bother me so much in this game. Probably because the game managed to keep me very entertained.
Probably the biggest problem with this game is that the campaign is very short. 11 missions with only one race (Space Marines) is not enough! The campaign also isn't too difficult. I played on medium difficulty and didn't have to reload even once (although thinking back, I always seem to have felt reasonable challenged, so perhaps that is not a bad thing). Perhaps I should have played on "insane" difficulty.
What saves the game is that it has good skirmish maps that are almost as entertaining to play as the campaign, and with all the different skirmish options, this game can basically be played indefinetly. I normally play RTS games for the campaign only, but in this case, skirmishes are good. And then of course there is online play...
This def. tops CC as my favorite RTS game. Can't wait for the first expansion...PS: Some of the fellow reviewers seem to complain about the lack of features that are really there. Hotkeys for instance. In fact, I find that this game has better hotkey support and a better interface in general than other RTS games. What is lacking however is the manual. Some of the things I just found out through trial and error. Others through the strategy guide. It is a shame that game developers and publishers still sabotage their own efforts that way.

Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy Expansion Pack Review

Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy Expansion Pack

This add on is a lot of fun. If you have the original game it is well worth getting this expansion. If you don't have the original game get the deluxe version, it comes with the original game and the expansion. Either way you will love this game. So now you have full control over every part of this game, you can now customize everything. The new scenarios in the game are great, it forces you to be creative and learn all the cool things about this game. With the expansion you have a map editor, scenario editor, editor editor ;) and you can create all the scenarios you always wanted to create. I give this product two thumbs up.

Master Of Orion 2 - Battle at Antares Review

Master Of Orion 2 - Battle at Antares

Produced in 1996, this game runs both in Windows 95 and DOS.
Here it is 13 years later, and I still come back over and over to this game as one of my favorites. In fact, I keep an old Windows 98 laptop just so I can avoid difficulties in playing this game on new computers.
The basic plot is you are a ruler of a space faring empire. But you are not alone. The galaxy is populated by other space faring races of roughly similar technology levels.
You start at a primitive level of technology and through the course of the game, must explore the galaxy, build your civilizations, build a war fleet, and deal or battle with alien races. To make matters worse, this pesky advanced race known as the Ataran's pop up from time to time and cause havoc.
The game is very customizable as to the galaxy you set up, your race, fleets and battles, etc. You can dive in and control things in detail every turn, or you can automate some features to concentrate on the core of running your empire. It is very similar to Master of Orion 1, but it has been expanded to add a lot of options. And yes, you still have to deal with that highly advanced lone battleship in the Orion system.
Being released in 1996, the graphics still hold up well. I highly recommend this game as one of the best turn based science fiction empire building games ever made.

Amazing Spider-Man - The Last 20 Years Review

Amazing Spider-Man - The Last 20 Years

I LOVED this idea. Collect all of the comics I'd never have the nickels to rub together onto a digital format for future viewing and reading. HOWEVER - this covers only the last 20 years. Even if that's the only portion you're really interested in - for just a few bucks more, you could have The Amazing Spider-Man: the Complete Collection which collects all of the comics from Lee to the present.
By the way - don't make the stupid mistake I made. The original CD collection plus this does not a complete set make. You miss out on the first 19 annual issues. If you're going to read them, you're going to want to be complete (unfortunately)...
Now, I'm trying to complete my (nearly) complete set again - ugh. Why do I not read these reviews?
