Disney's the Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Review

Disney's the Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

As I can't wait to see the CoN movie to come out, I immediately got Narnia the computer game when I saw it in the store. In the game, you can play as all four of the children during most of the levels. Each of them has their own special powers and abilities: Peter's strength lies in his sword, as does Edmund's, Susan can shoot arrows and use panpipes to find hidden items, and Lucy heals as well as tames beasts. The children can also team up together to perform special moves. Throughout the game, you unlock new special abilities for them, spending the coins you'll collect during each level.
There are 15 levels in the Narnia computer game. Each level is broken up into different `sections' or Checkpoints, where the game auto saves where you are. You can't actually save your game in the middle- only after you've finished a level- but if you die at any time during that level, you go back to the last checkpoint (as apposed to starting the level all over again).
During your level, you'll gather money to spend, points to unlock abilities, shields and statues, arrows for Susan to shoot, hearts for health. Not only do our heroes fight, but they also have to figure out things like how to get over an icy pond without falling in. Many times they have to work together to kill an especially difficult enemy. There's also some bonus stuff you unlock for each level you complete.
Overall, Narnia was great fun to play. There are two difficulty levels, Normal and Hard. On Normal, the game is not especially difficult, but it also is not easy- a good balance. Narnia has a cool 2-player feature that lets two people play the game at the same time, making it twice the fun. The graphics are really good and there are some nice clips from the movie itself. I feel it was a great buy and recommend it to anyone who is looking forward to the Narnia movie.

MARVEL COMICS: AMAZING SPIDERMAN UNMASK Review

MARVEL COMICS: AMAZING SPIDERMAN UNMASK

Whether you purchase the GitCorp DVD Marvel comic book collections, or you (cough cough) Torrent the files, the reality is that the pdf files used for these collections are a user-unfriendly format by which to view comic books. Especially if you want to view them on a tablet.
I recommend downloading Jonty Lovell's Comic Converter (just google it) and using it to convert the pdfs to the cbz files compatible with dedicated comic viewers like CDisplay Ex, Android Comics Viewer, or Perfect Viewer.
Depending on the horsepower of your PC, converting a full year's worth of issues files - say, around 125 MB of pdf files - to cbz files compatible with dedicated comic book viewer software takes less than 5 mins. You can use Comic Converter to customize a number of details about the conversion process; it's a very user-friendly app.
Do keep in mind that the converted files are many times larger than the pdf originals; so 12 issues of pdf files that take up 125 MB will balloon to 300 MB when converted to cbz format.
I used Comic Converter to convert the pdfs from `SpiderMan Unmasked' to cbz files and was quite pleased with the results on my Acer Iconia A500 10" tablet.
Because GitCorp uses a double-page, landscape orientation to display the original comic book pages, I had to spend 5 minutes or so tinkering with the settings in Perfect Viewer, after which I was able to view the comic in a single page, full-screen, portrait orientation.
Viewing the cbz files on your PC desktop monitor, laptop, or on a tablet, is markedly superior to the native pdf system.

Ideasoft Surething CD Labeler Review

For a pretty good price you can have one of the best label software products on the market. I've tried several and were never really satisfied. Surething allows you too save groups of CDs as one file so, for example, if I recorded a series of high school football games, I can save each football game as a separate label and save the whole thing as one file. When I want to print out just one, I can specify which one and what label on the sheet I want to use for the print.
There are lots of backgrounds that come with the software and lots of options for creating text. You can create text that circles around the CD or a simple text box with various fonts and sizes. Importing is easy so you can use your own graphics.
The thing I like most about this label software is that you can take any picture and center it, resize it, etc. so that it fits on the CD exactly how you want it. I started using this software at version 2 and it has improved without losing the feel of the original.

Brother Bear Review

Brother Bear
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not having seen the movie, I can't comment on screen-to-PC authenticity, but KnowWonder's Brother Bear game is an entertaining romp through a variety of gorgeous, interactive environments (Aspen forest, Valley of Fire, Salmon Run and more) on Kenai's quest to become human again. The game is narrated by Rutt and Tuke, aka the SCTV McKenzie Brothers of moose (voiced by hosers Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis, eh?), who explain the rough idea of Brother Bear: brothers Sitka, Denahi, and Kenai live in the Ice Age Pacific Northwest. When eldest brother Sitka is killed by a grizzly while protecting Kenai, Kenai tracks down the bear and kills it against the advice of the shaman. As punishment, he is transformed into a bear and must escape Denahi, who is now hunting him. Kenai befriends Koda, an orphaned grizzly cub, who helps him reach the place where the light touches the earth.
The game begins in the Apsen Forest in a training level, where Koda teaches Kenai the bear essentials: how to jump, climb, collect honeycomb to discover secret totems, and collect berries, salmon, and acorns to restore health. Interspersed between levels are arcade-style action games, such as racing to the top of the mountain, the Ice Run, and collecting the most salmon at the Salmon Run. These can be replayed to achieve a better score, or just to enjoy the action again.
Although there are no difficulty levels to choose from , the game increases in difficulty with each level. During each level Kenai must fight and escape Denahi. This is made difficult in the fact that once you enter the fights, there are no health power-ups, and if you die, you start right back out with as much or as little health as you had the first time. The saves are also automatic, and the game freezes up for a good 15-20 seconds every time it saves.
The claim that you can transform into an eagle, wolf or crow is deceiving: these are totems that you use in your quest, but you do not actually transform. The Eagle totem allows Kenai and Koda to fly to otherwise off-limits ledges and across barriers to collect bonus items (the Mystical Pinecone, which gives you an extra heart against the hunter) and to continue the game. The Wolf allows you to jump across super-wide chasms (you only use it once or twice), and the Crow allows you to see hidden objects or paths. There are also three totems that will aid you in your final fight against the Hunter: the Bear, the Sabertooth Tiger, and Golden Salmon. As a bonus, if you collect the six hidden totems, there is a hidden ending.
The 3D graphics are gorgeous: lush forest, snow-covered mountains, raging rapids and waterfalls, and volcanic craters. You can chase rabbits and butterflies for fun, fish for salmon in the river, and avoid grumpy chipmunks when collecting berries. The game did freeze up on my machine in a couple of spots (both in the Valley of Fire), but those were the only glitches I encountered. Brother Bear does require a 3D graphics card and a fair amount of memory to run smoothly (I ran it on an HP Pavillion with 256 MB RAM and an Nvidia TNT 64 MB graphics card).
Overall I feel that the game is too difficult for younger gamers (under six perhaps; the keyboard/mouse controls are rather tricky and very sensitive), but enjoyable for older kids.

Peanuts Where's the Blanket, Charlie Brown? Review

Peanuts Where's the Blanket, Charlie Brown
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is fun for Peanuts fans of ANY age to enjoy. Don't be put off by the marketing, which touts this as a game primarily for young children. I am an adult (also a gamer) and I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's interesting because there are games within the game you unlock. These are not challenging in and of themselves but it's fun to have these pop up randomly. The game is true to the spirit of the Peanuts characters, with Lucy being the fussbudget she is and Charlie Brown being resigned and wishy-washy. Although, it's not a Mensa workout for adults by any means, I think children will find it challenging and engaging and even adults may find themselves stymied by the sheer simplicity of the game, i.e. I sometimes found myself "thinking too hard" and missing obvious solutions because I'm a grown up. The only gripes I have, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars are the graphics and sound. The drawings are a bit ragged around the edges and the sounds don't always match the action (and the words don't always match the mouth movements). Additionally, the sound is set too loud (the lowest setting was still too loud at least on my iMac). Other than the few technical glitches, overall, this game is just as fun as the Sims and it's nice to play a game that doesn't involve violence. Besides, who doesn't love Snoopy and the gang? If you're a parent, this is a good game for kids and if you're a Peanuts fan, you'll love it.

Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Review

Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know, being a Carmen Sandiego fan, I have beaten all the other Carmen games and still sought to find the Junior Detective. Well, my actions can mean a few things, such as that I'm a die-hard Carmen-game freak, and that Carmen games are really, really good and fun to play. These are both correct, the reason being that even the most junior of Carmen games, with it's super-spy theme, is more fun than regular kid-friendly games geared toward older gamers. True, Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective is for younger gamers, but also true is the fact that it's not one bit less fun because of that reason alone. In a much miniature version of Carmen Sandiego World Detective, Carmen has again stolen a bunch of the world's monuments and it's up to the "junior detective" to travel to different countries, run their magnifying glass over mysterious objects where the crook is rumored to have passed by, and gather clues and evidence, thus nabbing their crook.
The best part of the whole game is you still "travel" to some unique and different countries such as Peru and Saudi Arabia, and you also learn tons of helpful geography facts and hear the native music of the country you're in when you "travel" there. Not to mention that a kids game like this one with the words EDUCATIONAL pasted up and down the box is actually fun; there's the real benefit. Overall, Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective is fun, enjoyable, cute, and educational; here's a game you can't go wrong with!

Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer - Complete Comic Edition Review

Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer - Complete Comic Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very excited when Marvel and GIT Corp came out with these products. Now instead of collecting every single comic book you can now simply pop in a DVD-rom and get every single issue you could have ever dreamed of!!!
I am a big fan of the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer comics are simply a throw-in in which I would be happy to take. The Fantastic Four were created so amazingly like a real life family that one must give Stan Lee and Jack Kirby their due. The villains of the FF are unreal starting in issue #1 with the Mole Man and moving on with issue #4 and the Sub-Mariner. The greatest villain of the Marvel universe makes his appearance in issue #5 in the form of Dr. Doom. Doom would go on to be one of the most famous comic book villains of all time ranking up there with the Joker, Lex Luther, Darkseid, and the Green Goblin. (Also remember Star War fans that Darth Vadar's suit was influenced by Doom's). These issues also cover the famous Silver Surfer and Galactus story lines starting in issue #48. There are so many first Marvel appearances in these issues like the Skrulls, Klaw, Black Panther, Negative Zone, Blastaar, Diablo, Pyscho Man, Molecule Man, etc. that the FF simply must go down as one of the most defining comic books ever sold.
This set is amazing and any one who does not want to pay the money for every issue (start saving because thats 750 comics) this is for you!!!!

Typical Disney software - it should take a developer an afternoon to put this together. Disney should be ashamed for charging money for such a weak, boring, uninspired product. There's better free games for my kids.
Buy this and your kids will be bored with it in 30 minutes and you'll feel stupid for giving Disney your money.

National Lampoon Review

National Lampoon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
National Lampoon at this point is an icon. To people of a certain age, they remember the counter-culture magazine that pushed the boundaries in every conceivable direction. For younger people, the name is associated with cheesy titillation movies. The magazine itself was usually funny, and had a bit of an underground cachet about it.
Well, they've brought it back in the form of a bunch of PDF files that take about 7 gigabytes on a DVD-ROM. It's basically every page of every issue, including (thankfully!) the ads which tended towards stereo equipment, male "protection", beer & liquor, and cigarette ads. [personally, I love the old stereo receiver ads because they had a couple that I wanted to buy, couldn't afford, and by the time I could, they didn't make them anymore!]
It works fine on a windows PC, and I'm guessing it would work fine on a Mac, provided you installed the Adobe reader.
But there are two problems. First, the scans are only fair. It looks like in some cases the magazines themselves were damaged, but even when that didn't happen, the quality is no better than you or I just scanning a magazine at home. However, what really spoils this collection is that there was no attempt to turn this into something that was searchable and indexable because each page is simply a photograph of the page with no attempt at OCR or transcription.
And while it doesn't spoil a trip down memory lane, it does make you wish they'd spent more money, asked for $10 more and given us something that would be a lot more fun.
As it is, for those who remember, it's a trip worth every penny of the $33 Amazon is asking for it. But it frustrates you because it could have been so much more.
