Railroad Tycoon II Platinum Review

Railroad Tycoon II Platinum
Average Reviews:

Excellent scenarios. Much better than first edition. The variety of places, real & imaginary, is enough to keep anyone amused for years. The addition of the ability to "set out" part of your train at one location & keep the rest, and/or pick up additional cars for a new destination is a tremendous enhancement & creates new options for shipping freight. I wish this was available for MAC. It was advertised that way, but only available for PC (IBM compatible).

This is one of the coolest games you will ever play. It's like a board game but everywhere you land there's a different game. Lots of the games are freak out scary like the movie. You have to fix a fence before a raptor catches up and kills you! You have to sneak past a T-rex and if you don't make it you get eaten alive! The dinosaurs are totally realistic. And the dueling dinosaurs game RULES!

This game works PERFECTLY and it is very FUN and ADDICTING. I have a Pentium 2 233 Mz. drive and it works like a charm! It only slows down when it is changing songs. It is challenging, too. I cannot get past the 3rd level where you earn 5,000,000 in profits. I can't stop playing it!
I read the reviews in the other version of the Airline Tycoon and I downloaded a patch so it dosn't ask for a manual check. (...) It is the only site that has the patch.

Restaurant Empire Review

Restaurant Empire
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Maybe not perfect, but I'd still buy it again.
Here are the pros:
* Campaign mode is not impossible to complete. With some other games like almost all the versions of SimCity, I find it almost impossible to successfully complete their demands, but with Restaurant Empire, it's much easier. In fact, it may be a little too easy. See "cons" below.
* Graphics are great. Not stunning, but great.
* Graphics *control* is fabulous. Best in any game I've ever played. You can rotate the game in a smooth, continuous motion. You can tilt your view from about 15 degrees above horizontal to straight overhead. You can zoom in and out effortlessly. I've never had so much control over my view in a game. Wonderful!
* Plot is cute. You're going to be the wonderboy of the culinary world, out to save the world from the evil OmniFood corporation, known for cheating in the food contests and genetically modifying their food.
Cons:
* Campaign may be a little too easy. In the beginning of the game, it sets goals that are very challenging. Having your fledgling restaurant make $40,000 in a month, for example, is incredibly difficult with the resources you have at that point. However, once you get past step 5 or 6 (in an 18-scenario campaign), it gets much easier. In fact, I started losing on purpose to build up cash for the next step - and on one or two occasions, I won anyway, without even meaning to. A little frustrating.
* There are a few annoying stereotypes to deal with. The mobster from Italy... well, he speaks-a in-a very annoying-a way-a, if you get my drift. But that's nothing compared to the black chef who is supposed to be from Louisiana, but speaks likes he's from South Central, "homey". And there's only one woman in the game, and she's demure and waffle-y, letting your character tell her to do whatever you want. She's only too happy to do what you tell her, but only if you promise you think she's capable. Not a huge con, but annoying enough to get me to save my game and quit every once in a while.
* There's not as much control as some people would like. I, for one, would have liked a recipe interface where I could add ingredients to certain recipes (or even create my own), or similarly tinker. As it stands, you can only change the quality of ingredients or decide whether or not to use optional ingredients. I understand there would be a lot more programming involved if one were able to create recipes, but I'm one who likes micromanagement. I also missed the ability to tailor my training program - the only thing you can do at this point is put a specific amount of money towards training in general. You can't target specific staff members (i.e., newly hired personnel).
* Lastly, there's only one campaign! Sure, it's long. Sure, you can change the way you play and either draw it out (and make loads of cash) or see how fast you can complete it. But in the long run, it's still the same things you have to acheive to finish, and that could get boring really fast.
All in all, this is a very good game. Much better than my previous restaurant sim, Fast Food Tycoon 2. And here are two gameplay hints for those of you who decide to purchase it:
1. There's a website for the game...Go there and download a patch for the game - it'll fix some of the minor problems and improve some aspects that needed tweaking. However, you have to follow this order: Install game from cd. Input cd code from back of jewel case. *Then* install the patch. Otherwise, your cd code won't work, and you'll have to start over.
2. Close any programs you may have running in the background, such as AIM or another messenger program. I had a few problems with the game freezing up on me, and only if I had all my background programs stopped was I guaranteed a problem-free game.
Enjoy!

Neighbors from Hell Review

Neighbors from Hell
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this game at EB Games thinking it was going to be awful. I started playing it, and I actually liked it! The basic idea is that you are on a reality TV show, where the goal is to make your neighbor as mad as possible. In order to do that, you play tricks on him - like drawing all over his mom's portrait with a black marker, cutting his favorite chair in half, switching out his hard candy with bath beads, etc. When he finds out, he gets super mad! And if you manage to pull several tricks in a row, you get extra points. If you get caught, he beats you up pretty bad. :D
The game runs well, I never had any issues when I was installing or playing it. The only thing I didn't like about the game is that I beat it about 2 1/2 hours. There are only about a dozen scenarios to do, and each has a timer of about 5 minutes. Also, I would have liked to see more variety in tricks - by the last few scenarios I knew every single trick and it was just a matter of strategizing on what order I wanted to pull them off in to get the maximum amount of points.
Overall - decent game, but way too short. :)

Players view a cross-section of a residential building where their character lives with a neighbor. For the price this is a one of the best games I have seen. It has tons of stuff to build and is hilarious to watch. You get little skiers and snowboards doing everything from jumps and wipe out crashes to avalanches. It also has a lot of game play depth.(100's of stuff to build and control) You can even view your resort from any thing you have built or see it through the eyes of any of the skiers or snowboarders. I have really enjoyed this game and I would recommend it to anyone who liked roller coaster tycoon or anyone who likes to ski.

Virtual Villagers 2: The Lost Children Review

Virtual Villagers 2: The Lost Children
Average Reviews:

I cannot say how much I appreciate these games Virtual Villagers is a fantastic gaming series. My children all love to play. We all sit around our computer talking about what we need to do to advance our village. We also giggle about the different things we can do to the villagers. Great idea with no violence I appreciate that so much. I especially like the levels of play #1 is a bit easier though my children did figure out the golden child where it was taking me ages to figure that out. The lost children is a bit more difficult you have to think and work at keeping them alive, and I do love the feature of being able to use tech points to buy different clothes for the villagers instead of them just adding up into infinity.

TRANSPORT GIANT - GOLD EDITION (DVD-ROM) Review

TRANSPORT GIANT - GOLD EDITION (DVD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm so glad I bought this game despite all the negative reviews.
Pros:
- Excellent graphics (for this genre)
- Great gameplay (challenging, interesting and reasonably realistic)
- Huge variety of vehicles (from horses to trucks to trains to ships to airplanes to blimps and everything in between)
- Strong financial and industrial model
- Realistic yet fun
- Signals for railroads
- Visible city growth
- Competent AI
Cons:
- Eats memory as your network expands (slows down your system when you exit the game)
- Little help info (although there's a user manual on the website)
- Poor game music (if that matters)
I've previously played Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Railroad Tycoon 2 and Locomotion, and Transport Giant is far better than the rest. TTD and Locomotion have pathetic graphics which completely neutralizes any benefit of good gameplay, while RT2 is plain unrealistic in its lack of signals, deals with trains only and cities never grow beyond hutments!
This little-known gem is one of the best strategy games I've played, especially among the tycoon types. Granted, it's not perfect and there's a lot of negative publicity around it, but the least you can do is download the demo and try it for yourself.

Coffee Tycoon for PC Review

Coffee Tycoon for PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently became a big fan of several games in the "Tycoon" series - I really enjoy learning about, and seeing how my actions/decisions impact the feasibility of various businesses & communities. So, when I came across an offer to download "Coffee Tycoon" & try it out for free (for 1 hour of gameplay), I was excited to begin another Tycoon adventure - but I wound up being really disappointed!
In "Coffee Tycoon" you own a series of coffee shops, with your job being to manage the employees, menu, store upgrades, etc... to get to the point where your company has earned 1 million dollars. It's a great concept but, with this particular game, it's difficult to see how your choices impact what is happening. Most things appear to occur by chance - things like problems with orders, leases running up, management issues, etc... occur & yet these are all things that you have no control over.
In all of the "Tycoon" games I've played to date, you can easily see the connection between your choices & the results that occur, but in this game, the things that most impact your bottom line are things you aren't given a choice about. I found this to be quite frustrating!
Now, it may be that these choices become available later on in the game, once you've earned a lot of money - but in order to earn that money, I think it's important to see the value of your choices from the get-go - so you can make changes along the way that will lead to increased employee/customer satisfaction, and ultimately increased profits.
Overall this is the worst "Tycoon" game I've played so far - I wouldn't recommend it.

Hoyle Casino Empire Review

Hoyle Casino Empire
Average Reviews:

This game isn't the most complex one of the "tycoon" games you will find. It is pretty entertaining. Sometimes I like a game that isn't so complicated that it takes three websites to consult with how to just make it through. The casinos that you work through are [copies] of their Las Vegas Counterparts, as are the "celebrities" that will make it into your casino if you are good enough. Some of the graphics are 2D such as many of the attractions you will build in your casino, and the games really aren't that distinquishable.
It is fairly easy to get the hang of, the audio is pretty good, with background noise, some nice lounge music, and commentary from the guests. The game does throw your casino development with a few curves such as other casinos trying to infiltrate and disrupt your business. Its fun, lighthearted, and a great way to get started in other "Tycoon" sort of games. While it isn't the best Tycoon game out there, I do like this one, it has good game play, and you don't need to buy a guide to work through this one.

I was a HUGE fan of Tycoon 2 and bought #3 a while ago, just never got to it and assume it is as good if not better, but there is no resolution to the lack of Windows 7 compatibility. I had to upgrade from XP so I lost the chance to play it, and if no patch supports windows 7 and you plan to go to 7, then do not buy this as it states Windows 7 is not compatible and there are NO patches. I only could get 1.05 patch and 1.06 does not help.

Capitalism 2 Review

Capitalism 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This title is less of a game than it is a tool for immersing yourself in a business environment. This is good because this was how it was advertised to me before I bought it. That said, it is very good at the latter, and fairly decent at the former.
The goal is relatively straightforward. Make money, hit some profit targets (or whatever the scenario asks for - could be cornering a market, achieving aggregate sales targets, etc), and succeed at capitalism.
The gameplay is very deep. Price setting, factory building (and floor planning, even), real estate, economic cycles, a slew of products to choose from, technology research, training investments, marketing, income statements and balance sheets for comparative analysis, stock market gyrations - if you can find it in the Wall Street Journal, chances are high it's in this game too. And, most features are realistic enough to give plausibility to the entire enterprise. I like the focus on total capital rather than just running a business with high sales levels - I think most people considering this title would agree that wealth and income streams are more important than simply being popular (and not rich).
The graphics are in between Sim City 2000 and 3000, which was the standard when it was released, and are fairly decent even today. They do not detract from gameplay.
The sound is not bad, either. The sound effects are quite nice - I like how they added touches like playing a clip of the trading room floor when you look at the stock market. The music...can be turned off, unless you like being in an elevator.
The replayability is where this game shines. This game has a mammoth store of scenarios, and ends with a scenario that encompasses all of the previous ones combined (I have put in 12 hours on this one scenario alone and still have not completed it, although it was mainly due to tediousness rather than difficulty - imagine cornering not just the auto market but all types of consumer and industrial markets from tires to toothpaste, along with all aspects of retailing, manufacturing, and commodity production). I found the challenge factor to be very near the top of strategy games in general, and very much enjoyed the complete non-linearity with which you could accomplish tasks and goals.
One caveat, which may further reveal the depth of the game: When you play this game, and put your all into it, you'll begin to wonder why you're not simply reading *real* market trends and income statements, and overseeing your *real* businesses and investments. That, more than anything else, made me put this game aside, and pick up the Wall Street Journal once more. Otherwise, a great business simulator, and fairly entertaining at that.

ZOO TYCOON COMPLETE COLLECTION Review

ZOO TYCOON COMPLETE COLLECTION
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the complete collection of games for the original Zoo Tycoon game, including the Marine Mania and Dinosaur Digs expansions. Basically, the game is exactly what you'd expect... it's a sim/strategy type game where you take the role of a zoo keeper, and build your ideal zoo. With dozens of animals, from African hunting dogs to saltwater crocodiles to Asian black bears, this game should appeal to any wildlife enthusiast. The whole goal of the game is to make sure your animals, and guests, are happy. The former is achieved by placing them in a suitable environment, the later by building animal house (like 'reptile houses,' 'primate houses,' etc), resturants, gift stores and other attractions. You can choose several scenarios, from free form games to pre-made games that require you to achieve certain, increasingly challenging, goals.
The two expansion packs add on animals, attractions and new features appropriate to them. The Marine Mania pack includes all manner of sea creatures - sharks, whales, dolphins, octopi, seals, and so forth, while Dino Digs includes dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts like Allosaurus, Megatherium, Smilodon and Ankylosaurus, amongst others. They also include new attractions, like the pterodactyl house and crustacean house, marina themed buildings, and the like, to get your guests attention. New features include animal shows where dolphins, orcas and sea lions can perform tricks, mixed exhibits that include land and water (for animals like hippos, walruses and sea otters), and electric fences to keep dinosaurs contained. Over all, with all these features and new scenarios any would-be Zoo Keeper will have literally hours, if not days, weeks and months, of game play. Definitely worth it for the money you'd spend on these great games. Love 'em all!
