Great Escape Review

Great Escape

The Great Escape is a well-done video game. It's very much in the spirit of the movie, which fans like me appreciate very much. The graphics, sound effects, music, and game play are all very good. The only negative thing I have to say about the graphics is a minor comment that not all of the characters look quite like their movie namesakes. What I like most of all about The Great Escape is the variety. The levels are quite different from each other, set in a variety of locations ranging from a bomber aircraft in the sky to a castle on the ground, not to mention many different prison camps. You get to be different characters throughout the game with different abilities. The gameplay itself varies as well: sometimes you have to use your noodle to get out of sticky situations; sometimes you have to be stealthy; sometimes you have to be quick; and occasionally you just have to fight, whether with your fists, a weapon, or a vehicle. A few of the levels that seemed difficult at first eventually became solvable after thinking the situation through and some trial and error. This is one of my favorite X-Box titles.

AKA Gorky Zero : Aurora Watching or just Aurora Watching(Eur) I got this becuase it is a sequel/offshoot of the excellent strategy/RPG game Odium(US) AKA Gorky 17(Eur) and FPS Gorky Zero : Beyond Honor all featuring the same protagonist Cole Sullivan. Another niche Stealth FPS, though it's no Splinter Cell. It delivers a decent storyline, though not as deep as the first game in the series, it holds is own. It has a few minor issues but none are too annoying. I recall hating the tutorial level mostly as you're forced to go through with it(maybe that was just the Polish demo and I couldn't understand the instructions she was giving). Also the early level after the snowmobile ride was tough, you had to sneak and kill or you would get over run when an alarm was sounded.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition Review

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All right, I have one gripe which I would still have had when this game was new: the voice acting is mediocre. That's the only significant bad mark I can give.
The gameplay is definitely story-based, but there are multiple paths through the game and multiple endings. If you're expecting an ID-esque shooter, I suspect you'll be disappointed; if you play this game right, you'll avoid shooting and killing nearly as much as the average person does in real life.
Characters develop throughout the game, the settings change from time to time, and I doubt that anyone will ever figure everything out the first time around. You have to decide a lot of things in this game, including what skills and "biomods" (things like cybernetic strength enhancement) to build up with the limited amount of upgrade points afforded you throughout the game. If you're an avid gamer, play it on the hardest level for a serious challenge.
Deus Ex may only have Unreal-era graphics, sound and music, but if it were made over again with all the newest bells and whistles today, its strengths would still be the intriguing(and somewhat prophetic)story it tells and the extensive playability it offers.

Hitman 2 Silent Assassin Review

Hitman 2 Silent Assassin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hitman 2 is, without a doubt, one of the most superb shooter games I've ever played. However, it should be duly noted that it, like its predecessor, is not a normal shooter. If you like melee games like Unreal, Hitman 2 may not be for you. It's all about stealth. On the harder levels you cannot win if you just go around shooting everyone.
That said, this game excels at being a thinking man's shooter. You can make it through many missions and only kill your targets if you're careful. You can now drug people, so that they wake up later but you can still steal their keys, guns, etc.
Hitman can assume disguises if he finds them, or he can change into the clothes of dead adversaries. This allows him to infiltrate enemy territory without raising an immediate alarm. Unlike in the original game, however, guards now see through disguises quickly if you stay near them too long, or carry a gun they wouldn't normally carry. They're very smart.
The weapon selection is top-notch. Old favorites like the fibre wire, Hardballers (now called Silverballers), army m60, and the WA2000 Sniper are back, along with some new additions like the SPAS auto-shotgun and the hunter's crossbow. You can even get a silenced pair of Ballers if you beat the first mission without firing a single shot (think: anesthetic or fibre wire).
Controls are pretty much the same, with one crucial exception: you now hold a key down to toggle run/walk. In Hitman, there were 2 separate keys for run and walk. Now there's a forward key and a key you hold to run. Much more intuative, I think.
The only thing that detracts from the game is the overall interface; by this I mean the system of choosing missions. In Hitman, the player created a profile which kept a list of previous missions for easy replay. This is gone. Hitman 2 keeps track of games simply through saves, so a list of 30 save games mixed among 3 difficulties can get confusing when they have only the name of the mission. However, if you just stick to loading the top game, you're pretty sure to have all the weapons you had when you stopped playing the night before.
Overall, this game is extremely fun. Better graphics than the original, beautiful levels, awesome weapons, and an amazing soundtrack that sounds straight out of a spy movie. If you like espionage/assassin games, games that require stealth not slaughter, then this is the perfect game for you. And even if you like killing everyone and everything that moves, this game has lots to offer (I like whacking pigs with a golf club or picking doves out of the sky with a crossbow).
Buy this (and the original, if you don't have it) and enjoy! You won't regret it.

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows Review

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First thoughts on Thief III, which I played for about 3 hours last night.
Fun, but not quite as fun (so far) as the first two. On my system, it's a little laggy, but that's probably because my video card is about middle/low end, as far as their specs go (NVidia 5500 FX) and I don't have the money to upgrade to the top of the line vid cards they want. Graphics are not as fabulous as I've heard, but again, I've got a middle of the road vid card, and I can live with it.
I dove right in without reading the manual, so of course, the re-mapped weapons keys came as an unpleasant surprise. I had gotten so used to hitting '4' to get my water arrows in the first two games, but that's '8' now. They also swapped the blackjack and sword (dagger) keys, so I kept pulling out the dagger instead of the blackjack. And honestly, I don't miss the sword, but then I never used it in the first two except to cut down wall-hangings. I never kill guards, and only the occasional spiders. But, these key mappings can be easily changed, so I'm not complaining too much.
Pros/Interesting positive changes:
The training mission rocks for getting you up to speed quickly. It explains all the buttons, and many of the changes between this and the first two games in terms of actions and dynamics.
The dynamic lighting is nice. You can now extinguish candles and other lights (but, strangely, not torches) by walking up to them and 'using' them.
I haven't tried out the third-person mode yet. "First-person" is not what people traditionally think of as first-person in games - it's just like the camera is mounted on Garrett's forehead. I like it, as it lends a little bit more realism to things - you can look down and see his feet, turn and see his arms. It takes a little getting used to, but I like it.
Garrett seems to comment a lot more in this game too. If you pick up an item and try to put it down in a spot where it won't fit, he'll say "uh-uh". He'll make little quips about locations like he did in the first two, but it seems like there's more of those.
Lock-picking is a lot more involved and a lot of fun so far.
There are pieces of loot that are special - they're worth more than regular loot, and are often figured into the objectives. Loot glint is actually helpful, although I can understand the complaints that it makes things too easy. But at the same time, they made loot and non-loot look a lot more alike in this game, and they still managed to hide some loot in out of the way places where you can't see the glint from normal eye-level.
The City mode is a lot of fun. I already ransacked Garrett's landlord's apartment. Just a word of advice - don't blackjack someone in the middle of the street in front of three witnesses. (*whistle* I hit the wrong button, so sue me. I was trying to pick his pocket)
With a few notable exceptions (see below), the physics are a lot more realistic. Almost everything Garrett touches can be moved - he can knock over chairs, knock swords out of sword racks, push large tables and crates, knock cups and plates onto the floor. On normal difficulty, the guards will come if they hear the noise, but they don't seem to notice things being out of place. I imagine on the higher difficulties, they'll start investigating.
Everyone complains about there not being any swimming and the substitutions of climbing gloves for rope arrows. I haven't missed either so far. The loading zones are mildly annoying, but not too bad - they kind of sub-divide missions into smaller chunks. I really didn't mind them too much.
Nitpicks/Little funny issues:
The bright blue "use" highlight is annoying. I can deal, but it's still annoying.
I miss the briefing movies. There are cutscenes, but when you enter a mission, Garrett just reads the text while it's on the screen. No pretty movies.
The physics of the unconscious/dead bodies is really funny. I blackjacked a guy and he bent over backwards in a position that probably should have left him paralyzed. It's now possible for Garrett to trip over the bodies and make noise. No longer possible to "stack" bodies in quite the same amusing way as the original, although that's probably for the best. (No more setting it up like the servants were messing around....)
I managed to make a guard kill himself - I blackjacked him while he was carrying a torch, and he fell on the torch and died.
There's not really an option to quietly set things down either, which is somewhat annoying. (Maybe there is, but I just couldn't find it?) I picked up a cup up from a table without realizing it wasn't loot (still getting used to the loot glint vs. the bright blue "use" highlight.), and when I hit the button for drop - he literally dropped it, it rolled off the table, clanged onto the floor, and attracted a nearby guard.
Overall: Fun, so far. I still prefer the first two, but then I'm only one mission into this one. It felt like Thief, though, which was the most important thing to me. More later!

I would of given it 10 stars but, I guess that wasnt an option. This game redefines the whole "shooter" genre. Who else besides me is getting sick of the game that tests how fast you can click, rather how fast you can think? Well, I am and this game rocks the boat! I am not talking about the demo. The demo is like playing on the "paint" program compared to the full game. I used to love Half-Life, and still do! But, to play Hitman, oh my GOD, its as if Im in heaven! The graphics are so incredible, I got lost in the game. The plants move as you walk into them; the fishtanks break; you can even see yourself in the shadows, strangling a chef! Its great! However, there IS a drawback: the graphics are so incredible, if you dont have a suitable graphics card, a part might be messed up.The gameplay and lasting appeal is also great! There are numerous GIGANTIC missions that will keep you on as long as you can keep your eyes from falling out. The levels are different in their own ways and are very nice. WAIT! YOU MUST HAVE 128mb RAM! You can play with 64mb ram, but I warned you, It WILL go slow when you get into some serious gunfights. It will go sooo slow that you will be thinking that you are watching a picture show. I found out the hard way but it is such a good game that I spent $50 to get another 64mb. These are good requirements...
128mb RAM, 500 mhz, good graphics card, good sound card
the rest you should know about. This game is great. DONT forget the pluses! The minuses can be a big part of some action, but if you have the above requirements, get this game. If you dont buy this game, I will personally have a talk with the 47 himself. HAVE FUN! Oh! One last thing, this game can go both ways, you better be able to think. DO NOT load the game thinking its a gorefest run-of-the-mill shooter! You must THINK! THINK! THINK! THINK! DONT GET BOGGED DOWN BY THE THIRD LEVEL EITHER! Thats a tough one, but if you get that one, you will pretty much know what they expect.BUY! BUY! BUY THIS GAME!

Thief II: The Metal Age Review

Thief II: The Metal Age

First and foremost, the game is fantastic. This game is not XP compatible (regardless of what the packaging says) but don't let that scare you off because (1) I know how to get it working on XP and (2) you won't regret the time it took to get it working. Here's what I did to get it working:
1) First, open up Windows Explorer (click on Start -> My Computer) and go to the folder where you installed Thief 2. Most likely this is located in your "Program Files" directory at "C:\Program Files\Thief2".
2) In that folder you should see a file called "USER.CFG" (the case of the letters doesn't matter). Open that file up in Notepad and remove the semicolon at the front of the line that says "safe_texture_manager". Now save that file.
3) Now try to play the game for a few minutes. If it freezes go to the next step. If it doesn't, you should be good to go.
4) Go to this website: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72507 and follow the instructions there.
If you have any questions let me know.

Hitman Contracts Review

Hitman Contracts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hitman: Contracts is another solid addition to the very entertaining Hitman series. It maintains the tension, open-endedness, great graphics, and convincing atmosphere of Hitman 2 and adds a few improvements. Overall, Contracts is not as good as Hitman 2, which is one of my favorite games of all time. Contracts offers only 12 missions, has inferior music, has some minor technical issues, and a few other problems. The game is not completely open-ended, since you do have set objectives and cannot progress to the next mission without completing them. However, you do have some options regarding how you approach a mission. It's really a game that's worth playing at least twice just to take advantage of the alternative ways of completing the various missions. For anyone who is a fan of the Hitman series or likes stealth games, I recommend Contracts (but try to get it at a discounted price). However, it is best to play it after playing Hitman 2, which is the real star in this fine game series.
Gameplay: Much the same as Hitman 2. The controls (mouse and keyboard) are easy to learn, and you can play the game from 1st- or 3rd-person perspectives. The game encourages stealth and conflict avoidance and rewards you for clean kills and limiting "collateral damage." However, you can approach a mission any way you'd like: you can go in with guns blazing, use a mix of stealth and aggressive tactics, or go for the coveted rating of "silent assassin." The sneak ability is improved over Hitman 2, allowing you to move faster while in stealth mode. Also, some of the levels are rather large, and you'll have to replay them in order to just get a feel for them and to determine possible strategies. Contracts is darker than the previous games, both in regard to weather (it's always raining or snowing) and the subject matter. Curiously, some of the earlier missions are harder than later ones. I found that the SWAT missions were the most intense, and the Hong Kong missions were the easiest to achieve the "silent assassin" rating on. On expert (medium) difficulty, the game lasted about 27 hours for me, as compared to Hitman 2 which lasted over 40. You could probably finish it in less than half that time if you didn't care about your rating and went in shooting everything (which does not always work).
The game does have its flaws. My biggest problem was the fact that you couldn't bring weapons that you found in one mission (or earned through getting the "silent assassin" rating) into new missions. This was a BIG oversight on the part of the developers, and one of the reasons that Contracts is clearly inferior to Hitman 2. On the bright side, your weapons are nicely displayed in a greatly expanded training area, and you can choose to use whichever ones you'd like if you replay completed missions. Also, you can conceal a sniper rifle in a carrying case in some of the missions. Still, one of the most impressive things about Hitman 2 was the freedom to choose your instruments of death and not have to just accept the ones that the game gives you. Another problem is the AI of characters. On a few occasions, my cover was blown for no apparent reason. At other times, I could sneak by guards who appeared to be looking right at me. Overall, Contracts just didn't seem as polished a product as Hitman 2. In places, the game ran slower on my machine, even though it more than surpassed most of the recommended specs. (I think this was mostly due to some of the lighting and weather [snow] effects.) Also, the game crashed to desktop 5 times during my 27 hours of gameplay, for no apparent reason.
Graphics: The game looks quite good. All of the scenary was convincing and immersive, and the weapons looked and behaved as you would expect. Agent 47 walks as cool as ever, and his sneaking looks better too. However, I hope that Hitman 4 does a better job with the way he runs, which still looks...uncool. Cut-scenes are all nicely done and tie the various missions together. Character models are well illustrated, and weather effects create a gloomy mood. Lighting effects are great, but will slow down game performance in a few places.
Sound: Convincing for the most part. Voice acting is good and has the appropriate accents. Ambient sounds are done well, as are the sounds of weapons. The largely techno soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is not nearly as good as his excellent orchestral work for Hitman 2, but it will do. Overall, there are no notable sound issues in this game.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Espionage Pack Review

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Espionage Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Splinter Cell series of games is one of the finer ones around.
Playing it through for the very first time is absolutely mind-bending: the environments are intricate (with an attention to detail rarely seen in other games), and the gameplay is a rich, rewarding, if occasionally somewhat linear, experience. This is a series that gets under your skin, and you find yourself really thinking like Sam Fisher to negotiate the levels.
Those used to playing run-and-gun first person shooters might find themselves a bit out of their depth. The game is meant to be played in a methodic, logical, and stealthy way. It is possible to play all the games in the series with NO unnecessary kills (occasionally there are places where you must assassinate an enemy, but these are rare and well-defined). I've played the entire series twice, and each time it's a new, detailed experience because one can play the games in a different style each time.
I'm presently trying to "ghost" the game, whereby I attempt to play the game with no unnecessary kills, no unnecessary knockouts, and no getting detected. It's a challenge, but its fun.
If you enjoy games where speed and finger-twitchiness are not key aspects of playing or enjoying the game, and would much rather analyze and get involved with the game, this is the series for you.
