Jewel Quest Review

Jewel Quest

I recently started playing several computer games, and this one was recommended to me by a friend - she said it could be addicting, and I must say that she was right!
I have been playing Jewel Quest on and off for several months now, and it seems as if the levels will never end. I think this is a good thing, because once you solve a game, you usually don't play it again. Because of the sheer # of levels, this game can provide many, many hours of enjoyment (or frustration....)
One of the great features of this game is that you are never made to start all over again - You keep working on the same board until you conquer it. After you've attempted the same board several times without beating it, you are given the option to just skip that particular level, and move on. I personally never choose that option, but I like to know that the option is available if I get too frustrated with the difficulty of a particular section.
The goal of Jewel Quest is to match various items - you must match at least 3 of the same item in a row or colum. By doing this, you turn the "sand" tiles to "gold", and you must get the entire grid gold within a specific period of time. It may sound easy, but as you move along the levels, it actually gets quite difficult.
Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys matching games where there is increasing levels of difficulty. My thought is that it's probably more appropriate for adults as opposed to children.

Big Kahuna Reef: A Wave of Underwater Puzzle Action Review

Big Kahuna Reef: A Wave of Underwater Puzzle Action

Big Kahuna Reef is like several PC games out there that require players to make matches of three or more items in order to clear the board. With this game, your goal in the earlier stages is to clear the board and free the fish by making matches of three or more items. In later levels, you have to match 3 or more items in order to bust the fish out of boxes, chained boxes, metal boxes, and more.
Irregular shaped puzzles and metal/chained boxes make for some challenges. I rarely run out of time on these puzzles, but when I first played it during a trial period, I did run out of time.
There are four beautiful backgrounds and the fish are very relaxing. The symbols you need to match include white pearls, black pearls, crabs, shrimp, shells, and more. On the border of the game, there are black fish shadows with black round circles below. These represent the amount of boards you need to clear to be able to release a particular fish or sea creature. Once you clear a particular level, you can release as many fish into the aquarium as you like. One level even allows you do release schools of silver fish! (can't remember the name of the fish right now).
You can also just watch the reef from one of four vantage points. In fact, you can even set it as your screen saver. I have the reef set as my screen saver and it's very relaxing (and beautiful) to watch the fish.
There is a "net" power-up that is activated after you make so many matches. This allows you to remove ANY piece in the board, which proves especially helpful for the challenges of irregularly shaped puzzles.
In my opinion, this is the best "eliminate groups of 3 or more on the grid" games out there. (I own several, including Jewel Quest, Bejeweled 2, and Phlinx). The graphics are gorgeous, and the music is very soothing...but very "island" like. (Think Hawaiian or Jamaican music.)
Highly recommended!

Magic Match Review

Magic Match

This is one of those games you start playing for five minutes and the next thing you realize, it's hours later. Magic Match is easy to learn, but hard to master. It's one of those match games where you have to find three items in a row on a grid, but all sorts of things get thrown in the mix, like boarded up spots, or frozen pieces, wild card "coins" you can earn for long matches and magic orbs to gather all of one item on the board. As you go things get harder and you can get more powerful versions of your spells, which makes things interesting. Also it is fun trying to figure out how to earn trophies and going up in wizard rank. There is definitely replay value too, I am on my second way through the single player mode (this time on "hard") trying to beat my scores and get the rest of those darn trophies.
This game is good for grown ups and kids will love it too. They will get a kick out of the side-kick gremlin guy.

7 Wonders of the Ancient World 2 Review

7 Wonders of the Ancient World 2

My favorite part of this game is the mini-game which challenges players to rely on logic to make the right moves to free the star, cornerstone or other object.
The game comes with two modes: Regular for building the wonders one by one, and free play where you can revisit and play any unlocked wonder except the secret one. After completing construction of all eight buildings, the game enhances its replay value by assigning you a rank and taking you back to Stonehenge without starting over on points or difficulty.
Anyone disappointed with 7 Wonders of the Ancient World should try the immensely improved 7 Wonders II. For those who haven't played the original, skip it and head straight to the sequel.

7 WONDERS 3 is a challenging game with all the whistles and bells. It gives your mind a good workout. The only problem I had was stopping myself from playing it every night until I got the 7th wonder. I loved the history they included when you completed each wonder.
