Zuma Deluxe Review

Zuma Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Zuma Deluxe is like several PC games in that the goal is to eliminate balls by shooting balls of the same color at the chain. For example, with Luxor, the shooter is at the bottom of the screen and your goal is to eliminate all of the balls.
In Zuma Deluxe, the goal is the same except that the frog shooter is at the *center* of the board and rotates 360 degrees. Chains of various colored balls snake towards an opening. If the balls reach that opening, you lose a life. (You get 3 lives per game, but can accrue additional lives if you score 30,000 + points if I recall).
There are quite a few puzzles within each Level; however, you have to complete ALL the stages in order to reach the next Level. For example, I'm on Level 6 which happens to have 6 Stages. I can't get past this tricky Stage 6, so I keep getting knocked back down to Stage 1 of Level 6.
Random balls will light up during gameplay and if you eliminate the chain that contains these particular balls, you get special temporary perks. For example, there are balls that will create a laser shot for accuracy, slow down the balls, stop the balls, reverse the balls, or fry all the surrounding balls (this one is my fave!).
Also, there is a coin that shows up randomly on the outskirts of the maze and if you hit the coin, you get extra points. You also get extra points for shooting chains in the middle of "gaps".
There are triangular mazes, circuituous square mazes, and even mazes with two openings. Perhaps the most tricky, however, are those that snake under one another, making it difficult to track the balls.
You can play two versions: Gauntlet and Adventure. You can choose to make the game full screen or small screen.
My only complaint is that I bought this game in the store and like Bookworm (another Pop Cap game), I had to re-download a game using a universal .exe patch in order to get the game to work. Without it, the game starts with a 60 minute "trial period" that won't allow you to play beyond it. This is a serious glitch that Pop Cap Games needs to deal with, because it affects other games, too (such as Insaniquarium). If you need the patch, un-install Zuma Deluxe and re-install using http://beta.popcap.com/pubfiles/PopCDFix.exe
I highly recommend this addictive PC game!

Alien Disco Safari Review

Alien Disco Safari

Earlier this year, Roger Ebert rekindled an ongoing debate by claiming that not only are video games not art, no game in our collective lifetimes could ever aspire to be art. Well, Mr. Ebert, I think you've been looking in the wrong places.
The plot begins in 1977 (a possible reference to the popular science fiction film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", released that very same year?), when Earth launches a (fictitious) probe into space with samples of our culture, which, at the time, included disco. Unfortunately, aliens apparently somehow found this probe thirty years later, and found that they too enjoy disco. Obviously this transgression cannot go unpunished, and so the player assumes the role of a heroic gunner who mows down the peaceful invaders as they walk in circles near two different landmarks on Earth, as well as on their own ship.
Let me just say that the graphics and sound are top-notch. The Sega Saturn just doesn't get enough games that look this good. A lot of the 2D sprites even almost had me fooled, and I think it's safe to say that I have a pretty trained eye for this sort of thing. The care the artists put into the four different types of alien really shines through. They could have gotten away with just having one enemy type who went down with one shot on every gun, but the merely "good" is clearly not "good enough" for Encore, because like I said, there are FOUR different enemy types who go down with one shot. And if you were worrying that you would only get to see Egypt, France, or the alien ship once, rest assured, because you get to see them again and again in the game's "46" levels. There's really something for everyone here. Even if the visuals aren't giving you enough Disco Action with their complete lack of anything remotely disco-related, the game's MIDI soundtrack is sure to remind even the most knowledgeable music expert of disco.
Not even these qualities would save the game, though, if its gameplay wasn't fantastic. And that's where the "point and shoot" interface comes in. All you have to do here is click once on the aliens, and bam, they're dead. None of that irritating calculating bullet trajectories, or trying to lead them with your fire, or calculating how much ammo to use, because every enemy dies instantly and in one shot. This continues until you reach your quota for the level, at which point you still get to keep shooting aliens for however much of your 2-minute time limit is left. And for those of you who still need more variety than that, there are 14 "different" weapons, including the sniper rifle, which is like the default perfectly accurate gun, except more accurate; or the laser beam, which kills enemies in one hit like the default gun. And these are just two examples.
I unfortunately wasn't able to reach the end, but don't worry, that's just because this game was too intensely fun for me. Good luck to whoever does complete this game; I'm sure its creators would be interested in learning how it ends.

Classic Games Galore (Jewel Case) Review

Classic Games Galore (Jewel Case)

I bought this mainly for Rook, but sometimes play the other games too. The most annoying thing about this package is that you must have the CD in the drive to play. I understand that it's for copy protection, but it's very irritating if you want to load it onto your laptop for travel. Most games have some interesting variations (Rook has classic, tournament, and Red One), but if Atari and Hasbro had really thought it through they could have allowed more variation for house rules, like some PC versions of Monopoly do. No apparent differences in the computer players either, beyond the silly animations. The tutorial feature is a nice touch. Pretty basic stuff, but a good buy for under $10.

Pure Pinball Reloaded Review

Pure Pinball Reloaded
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played real pinball since the 1970s and video pinball since the days of the Atari 2600, and the last few years have been dry ones. The real-life pinball industry is in sad, sad decline, with only Chicago's Stern Company still making new machines. Legendary manufacturers Bally and Williams have faded into history, with Gottlieb/Premier having folded shortly before them. Remaining machines are skyrocketing in price as complete machines and replacement parts in any condition become more and more scarce with the passage of time.
As their real-life counterparts become harder to find, good new commercial pinball software has also become increasingly rare. On the non-commercial front, there's the brilliant Visual Pinball/PinMAME, and more recently Future Pinball, but that's another story altogether...
Since the mid-90s, the king of the commercial pinball software hill has been the Pro Pinball series, most notably the landmark "Timeshock". It took until now for a challenger to emerge, and this game is the decisive winner. It surpasses the Pro Pinball series in every sense but one--unlike the Pro Pinball titles, it doesn't provide access to operator menus where you can adjust machine settings for things like number of balls, replay, match, kickback, tournament, system tests, etc.
Graphically, this title is nothing short of astonishing, particularly on a beefy PC at 1600x1200 resolution and with graphics settings maxed out. Yes, that's your player reflection you're seeing when the ball drops down to the flippers! Yes, that's a brilliantly rendered full-color dot matrix display with great animations! In the options, you can choose to include the playfield glass or not, include the glass and metal reflections or not, or even include the surrounding room or not. On top of the jaw-dropping graphic detail is the 12 separate views available, assigned to each of the function keys. Those allow you to see the action from a variety of perspectives and with varying amounts of scrolling action.
Though the eye candy is lavishly abundant, the substance supporting it is equally incredible, especially for the experienced pinball player, who will get more and more excited as they begin to read the rulesheets for these tables. Each table rewards replay in ways so numerous that the fact that only 3 tables are included becomes almost over-generous the more you play.
Yes, only 3 tables are presented here, and unlike today's few real-life machines, none of them use licensed themes--"20th century warfare", "street racing", and "railroading"--but each of the tables is so deep, detailed and polished that you won't feel shorted in the slightest. After all, the Pro Pinball titles were each a single table. We'd still love to get the 4th table that came with the Xbox version as a downloadable extra sometime, though (hint, hint!!)
The ball physics model is the most important part of any pinball software, and while this one isn't totally perfect, it is more than close enough for 95% of players--only highly experienced real-life players will likely quibble, primarily with the details fudged with regard to ball spin and bounce, not velocity and direction.
The audio is appropriate and well-done. The music (particularly on the "World War" table, which has as its accompanying music an interesting take on the Adagio) is plentiful enough not to get too repetitive too quickly. The sound effects are very good, and fit the themes very appropriately. I would like to have heard a bit more of the ambient noises; the sound of the ball rolling on the wooden playfield and against metal ball guides and wire ramps, etc.
The table designs are brilliantly executed, with tons of flow, great playfield toys and ramps, opportunities for high-yield strategic shotmaking, insanely deep rulesets, fantastic detail and fully-realized theme integration. It'll take some time to crack the high score board, and when you get there, you'll definitely feel a sense of reward and accomplishment.
The credits list a team of only about 20 people, 2 of whom were testers and 2 others who designed the Xbox packaging. That's boggling to consider after you've spent some time with this software and really begin to get a feel for the level of accomplishment this game represents.
If these 3 tables actually existed in real life--and they absolutely could, as this is not an arcadey or cartoony version of pinball--these machines would be snapped up by operators and collectors at $5-7000 each and would immediately vault into the top eschelon of machines ever made--they're that good.
If this development team and the tools they used to build this software had the rights to develop re-creations of the greatest 15-20 pinball machines of the last 20-25 years, collectors and serious players would be nothing less than overjoyed. The 3 tables in this package more than prove that doing so with phenomenal results would be well within the capabilities of this team and their tools and talents.
This game will delight the hardcore pinball aficionado while fully satisfying others who simply know a great pinball game when they see it. If you have any interest in pinball whatsoever, I strongly recommend that you spend the pittance they're charging for this software--you will WAY more than get your money's worth. This is hours and hours of pinball fun for half the cost of a flipper coil. Even a pinhead would take a deal like that!

If you like classic TV and trivia games you'll love this game. It is a fast paced game that can be played by 1 or 2 players or even by teams if you choose to. I liked the fact that actual stars from classic TV shows ask the questions. There are 6 different mini games but only four are used in any one game. So you don't even know exactly what combination of games will be used when you play. I think that adds to the fun of playing the game. Another feature this games has is the ability to keep track of which games have been played so that there is less chance of repeating games until all games have been played.

When I consider the price, I want to say, " Great Games ." But, when all was said and done,I wish I'd have passed on this one.
For one, you need the patience of Job, trying to get these in your PC ! ( We
gave up after the second disc ! ) Then you watch to see how often anyone is actually
playing them. I can count on one hand the number of times my ages 9 & 12 girls have
played. It's 'really corny games verses the difficulty of playing on a computer'

Luxor 2 Review

Luxor 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Luxor 2, to put it mildly, is a vast improvement over the first two Luxor games. Once you play it, you may never go back to Luxor or Amun Rising again.
What's changed? The core concept of the game is the same, but the graphics are MUCH better...the improvement would be like going from the original Playstation to the PS3. The backgrounds are more creatively designed and are much more immersive, and the balls wobble in their tracks to simulate texture and grow and shrink to simulate depth of field as they move. FX such as lightning, flame, smoke, and explosions are improved as well. The scarabs that push the balls now crawl, roll backwards, and react to powerups.
Basic gameplay hasn't changed, but there are a few new twists, including:
- All the powerups from the first game and the Scorpion from Amun Rising appear, plus new powerups: a lighted net which catches falling coins and treasures, a color-changing cloud, fast-shooting daggers, and a lightning storm which randomly destroys balls.
- When a chain is destroyed, anywhere from one to four or five treasures (jewels, jewelry, etc.) are lauched onto the screen.
- The game now has a ranking system which grades your gameplay; the highest rank is Pharaoh.
- Each level features a bonus game which is very similar to the Challenging Stages in the game Galaga.
If you were at all impressed with Luxor, you owe it to yourself to give Luxor 2 a try.

Lemonade Tycoon 2 Review

Lemonade Tycoon 2

We bought this game for $9.99 on amazon, hoping it would be fun. It wasn't exactly fun.
1. When you first start playing, the game is really fun. But in a couple days you will easily get bored after you hit the 8 stand limit. All you do is adjust the stock then click start day. Adjust the stock and click start day. Adjust the stock and click start day. You get the point. The game is really boring. There are certain upgrades you can get, but you can only get 2-3 per stand.
2. Another con is that this game doesn't show the most important features of a business. You can only do minor things. Minor things doesn't exactly give you the idea of a business.
3. When you start the game you do this.
Buy a stand
Adjust the recipe
Adjust the price
Adjust the stock
Upgrade your stand (You can't really do this because you don't have enough money to do this at the beginning)
Click start day.
Watch the people running back and forth on the screen.
When the day ends, adjust the stock.
Click start day again.
Watch the people running back and forth on the screen.
Adjust the stock
Click start day.
Watch the people running back and forth on the screen.
Adjust the stock
Click start day.
Watch the people running back and forth on the screen.
Adjust the stock
Click start day.
Watch the people running back and forth on the screen.
When you adjust the stock, click start day, and watch the people running back and forth on the screen, one game day has passed.
After a while adjusting the stock gets really boring because you have 8 stands to adjust stock for every game day.
Right now on this game I already adjusted the stock about 6,000 times. I'm not even adjusting the stock now and letting my stock go to waste. This game has NO educational value. So I threw this game out.
Really boring game.
Sound:6/10

I would NOT recommend this game to anyone!
