I bought this game for myself originally, but it was not long before my oldest child was asking me to buy a copy for the kids' computer. This is the fist non-educational game I have bought for my kids and they really like it. They "won" the game after about 1 month, but it is made to where you can just keep playing after achieving the main goal.
We can visit each other in our 'gardens' and it is still safe in a way that no one else can visit with my kids. It is a super cute and clean game and has actually taught my oldest how to read/spell a few words.
I especially like the workshop tasks, they are fun to do even for adults and I think teaches good skills to kids. The workshop was a little too hard at first, but you know how kids are - it was no time before they were making elaborate stuff for the townspeople.
You can change the appearance and voice of your character at any time in the game and the kids like that a lot. I think it is novel, but only interesting the first couple times.
I enjoyed playing the game, but got bored with it after a couple weeks. My kids are still going strong, playing as often as I will let them. If it were just me, I might give it only 3 or 4 stars, but accounting for my kids and how much they love it, I am giving it 5.

The Print Shop 22 Deluxe Review

The Print Shop 22 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had minor problems with previous versions of Print Shop, but the new 22 version installed without a hitch and runs like a champ.
I am not a professional graphic artist and do not work with desktop publishing or illustrations on a day-to-day basis. I think this is why I become so frustrated wrestling with Corel Draw and find a more intuitive and user-friendly program like PS-22 so useful, and indeed, fun to play around with.
My "thing" is scrimshaw. I am constantly on the lookout for little gimcracks like, perhaps an artistic compass rose, a sea monster, a mermaid, etc., to add that little finishing touch to my work. Finding a huge source of such stuff that can be easily edited, resized, and printed as an overlay that will exactly fit into my work is like finding gold.
There's a lot of very attractive bang for the buck in Print Shop 22.

Dora the Explorer: Lost City Adventure Review

Dora the Explorer: Lost City Adventure
Average Reviews:

Our four-year-old daughter loves Dora the Explorer, so we were delighted to see the release of Lost City Adventure. The reviews so far have been raves from the little one (and from us). The animation, music and sound are first rate, but more importantly, the challenges are appropriately measured for a pre-schooler. This program stacks up well against the Knowledge Adventure titles like Reader Rabbit. Skills such as sequencing, color matching, memory and basic addition are developed in fun and entertaining environments. Plus, there are three difficulty levels, so if your child is frustrated or bored at a certain level, you can adjust accordingly.
The program works great using the Classic environment on our Macintosh G4 laptop and G3 desktop computers. Have fun!

Mountaincow PrintingPress 6.0 Invitation Printing Software, Personal Edition (Windows) Review

Mountaincow PrintingPress 6.0 Invitation Printing Software, Personal Edition (Windows)
Average Reviews:

This product does the job it's intended for. Makes organizing projects easy. A couple of small complaints though. It doesn't come with a ton of wedding appropriate graphics or clip art. The clip art selection could be a lot bigger. I had to go online and pay for another wedding graphics package in order to design my wedding invitations. I also realized that if you have microsoft word, that you can do basically everything that this software does if you know the right settings to use, this program just makes it a little easier because it's tailored to invitation printing. If you are good with computers (which I suggest you should be if you print your own wedding invites), you could avoid buying this if you have microsoft word. oneheartweddings.com has a better selection of graphics for your $30 than this product does and you can just use them with word. Also, the papers and envelopes available for sale on the mountaincow website can be found for much better prices elsewhere on the web (such as paperandmore.com) If you are new to the whole process and don't know much about microsoft word, this would be a good product for you.

Calendar Creator Review

Average Reviews:

I am a long time user of Calendar Creator and purchased this "new" version because my version 12 has been hanging anytime you try to use the file menu. Broderbund had no tech support solutions to resolve that issue, so I hoped that a new version of the software would correct it.
To my disappointment, Calendar Creator Platinum is NOT a new edition, but merely version 12 repackaged. If you have version 12 under the Calendar Creator Deluxe package, you already have this software. Even the installation images still use the CC Deluxe pictures.
Now I'm stuck with two copies of software that doesn't want to work (the "new" version has the exact same problem as the "old" version).

JOHN DEERE AMERICAN FARMER - DLX VERSION Review

JOHN DEERE AMERICAN FARMER - DLX VERSION
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent game! Not only do you get to do some really cool farming but you also get to use actual John Deere equipment.
Let me say to the action oriented caffienated monkeys: this game is not that type of game AT ALL. This is an RTS style game that is most similar to a city building game. Only main difference is that instead of building and managing a successful city you have to build and manage a successful farm. It should also be noted that the farm is the conventional factory farm type. The game is geared towards the mega-sized farms on several hundred acres.
When you buy this game make sure to get the latest patch as it will definately help with bugs. Although, the patch doesn't fix all of them, the game is stable enough. I've played it already for several hours and had it crash only is a specific situation involving the gator vehicle. That situation is easily avoidable. Other than that it ran fine.
The only other problem about game play I noticed is that the mouse drags across the screen a bit slower than I would like (but this could be due to my old video card). Still a mouse speed option would have been nice. You can't multiple select workers in this game but it doesn't matter because you wouldn't ever need to.
I played the first game in this series, John Deere American Farmer, and this game is definately an improvement. You get 5 different cash crops you can grow, 5 different kinds of livestock, and an expanded list of equipment you can buy. There is also a commodities market that fluctuates and the equipment and buildings have realistic price tags. So this game gives a pretty decent view of what being a big agribusiness is like. You have to be smart about your money and the market and you have to be patient. When you get your produce ready, you have to sell at the right time to get the best price.
If you like good old finger picking style country music with banjos, mandolins, guitars, lap-guitars, and the fiddle, then you'll love the music in this game. In one hour of gameplay, I didn't hear a track played twice. And the music is very well done. Sometimes, I think I hear some definate country classics, but I'm not completely sure because I don't know if they would have wanted to pay for the rights to use them. Even so, there are some country riffs or phrases that are used again and again throughout the industry and these common phrases are in the music in this game. All of the music is instrument.
The big bonus, is that if you're sick and tired of violent games and want something to play for a bit after a long day of work you can sit down and relax to some great music and play with big boy toys.
Kudos to the game maker!

Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek Review

Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played all of Her Interactive's Nancy Drew games, and the last several games were a disappointment to me (Nancy Drew: Danger by Design and Nancy Drew: The Creature of Kapu Cave in particular). Danger by Design at least had a fascinating backstory, but the weak, ridiculous ending ruined any good feelings I might have had. Kapu Cave was just...bland. Boring from beginning to end, there was NO compelling story and the "puzzles" were mind-numbing (sorting of bug poop and making endless shell necklaces to earn more money), with nothing "spooky" about the "mystery."
White Wolf of Icicle Creek is more engaging than the last few Nancy Drew games. This time, Nancy's in the Great White North at a skiing lodge owned by Chantal Moique. Mysterious goings-on like food poisoning, guest injuries, and explosions have been scaring off Chantal's guests. To add to the mystery, a white wolf has been seen (and heard) at the time of many incidents.
The cast of suspects includes Ollie, the lodge's handyman, Lou, a college art student from California, Yanni, a champion skier from the Eastern European nation of Freedonia, Bill, a Canadian construction worker who's here to ice fish, and Guadalupe, a mysterious birdwatcher with a secret. As the game progresses, you'll discover hidden secrets and motives about each one through snooping through their personal belongings; after all, Nancy's taken on the job of maid and cook, so you're responsible for housekeeping every day.
Which brings me to the first major flaw. Ever since Secret of Shadow Ranch, ND games have featured the annoying (and time-filling) element of "chores." Generally, these seem like things that adults thought would be fun for kids. Generally, these are a nuisance rather than being fun, and White Wolf is no exception. In fact, White Wolf forces you to clean rooms once a day and cook three times a day for the entire game. This is tedious and cuts down on available time to explore, as does a feature from one of the first ND games, Nancy Drew Treasure In The Royal Tower: the frostbite factor. Every time Nancy goes outside, you have to closely monitor the "frostbite" bar at the top of the screen. If Nancy gets too cold, she freezes to death. This also means that she can only be outdoors until around 5 pm every day, forcing you to advance the game to the next day unless you enjoy wandering for hours inside the lodge. Like several earlier games, you use the alarm clock in Nancy's room to advance the game.
Since this is the sixteenth ND game, I suppose it's natural that several puzzles feel recycled. Many are easily solvable and intuitive for the most part, except for the most frustrating puzzle I've ever played: Fox and Geese. A board game similar to checkers, you are forced to beat it not once, but three times. Even with a walkthrough, it literally took me several frustrating days. I was so frustrated that I nearly walked away from the game for good.
You do get to interact with the white wolf, who helps you to solve several puzzles. This is a definite improvement over befriending the killer whale in Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island, as you can actually give the wolf commands and have her help you solve the mystery. The wolf graphics were generally quite realistic, and game graphics were good overall, especially the outdoors scenes when you're walking through the snowy mountains.
I didn't see the villain coming from the clues throughout the game, so Her Interactive did a good job with the "a-ha" factor. I felt like there were limited exploration opportunities, which made the game feel claustrophobic at times, particularly since you are trapped indoors at night due to the cold. But there are definite improvements in storytelling and puzzle execution since Kapu Cave, and the next game,Nancy Drew: The Legend of the Crystal Skull, looks to be one of the best ND games yet.

Tomb Raider Legend Review

Tomb Raider Legend
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a Tomb Raider fan since the beginning. I fell in love with Ms. Croft the second she unsheathed those dual pistols, just as many other gamers did back in 1996, and followed her to her ungainly demise. After Tomb Raider III, I sat back and lamented the fall in quality, silently hoping Eidos would either just kill the series altogether or find a way to make it work.
Tomb Raider: Legend (the seventh iteration) finds itself in the hands of Crystal Dynamics. Thank god for them, too; they take what was great about the original and revamp it into a good, if not necessarily brilliant, game.
We gain more backstory for Lady Croft in this game than we have in the past. When she was a small girl she and her mother suffered a plane crash in the Nepal. While trying to reach safety, they come accross an artifact that whisks Lara's mom into some strange portal, never to be seen again. It's not consistent with the previous games, but given their lack of interest in a cohesive storyline, that's not a bad thing.
The voice acting is usually quite good, especially on the part of Ms. Croft. To her benefit ( or detriment, depending on your personal prefference), she is alwasy in contact via an earpiece/camera with her comrades back home, so there is always dialogue being delivered. It helps to keep the mood light, and the writing can be funny at times, but it sometimes comes off as corny. Based on various reviews, it's bound to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of device. Personally, I think it helped flesh out Lara as a character (let's face it; irregardless of her physical form, we don't know much about her, really), but I understand why others might not have.
The graphics are all very good, sometimes bordering on gorgeous. The PC version may look either the best or the worst, depending on your system. For me, it looked great, but on lower-end systems, it might look like a first generation PS2 game. There were slowdowns at times, but nothing that broke up the gameplay.
Thankfully, gameplay can really be a lot of fun. Thanks to the new physics engine, what might have been a typical "insert key in slot A, after backtracking through three levels, then move X number of boxes onto switches" kind of game, the environmental puzzles are much more interesting. The game borrows very heavily from the Prince of Persia games in terms of control and platforming, which is a great thing. Controlling Lara no longer feels like driving a tank, and the mouse-and-keyboard combination is standard. It's not all that original, and Lara isn't as capable a gymnast as the Prince, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
The downside to gameplay are the now legendary god-awful motorcycle levels. There are only two of them, thank god, but they are absolutely terrible. The graphics get a major downgrade, control is wonky, and they are much too long for their own good. They aren't enough to make you stop playing, but they should have been omitted. Clearly Crystal Dynamics were sold on their "hot chick on a bike" stereotype. The gunplay needs work, too. While it's certainly an improvement on the original's, it's very easy. There is a nifty bullet-time effect you can activate, but it gets old after the 80th enemy you kill using it.
The game is also over far too soon. If it were about ten hours longer than it is, I would have given the fun factor a five, but as is, it simply isn't long enough. It only took me five and a half hours to complete the first time through, although other reviewers have quoted even double that time. Perhaps it's because I'm a Tomb Raider veteran (as well as Prince of Persia veteran), but I simply couldn't imagine it taking anybody, even on the hardest difficulty level, ten hours to complete. The Croft Mansion makes a return, too (with the design of the movie's mansion, rather than the original one we're all so used to), and it is a lot of fun to search through. It might not take too terribly long, either, to discover all the secrets, but it's a nice distraction.
I also get the feeling that this is a test for Eidos to see whether or not to greenlight development on a sequel. The story ends on a cliffhanger, and as a whole it feels episodic. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel, though, as long as those darned bike levels were removed. At last a Lara Croft game worth its wait in cardboard!
Pros:
Great graphics
Fun gameplay
Better storyline than in the past
Great return to form
Cons:
Terrible motorcycle levels
Far too short
No incentive to replay
Gunplay is weak
Hopefully the next Lara game (we all know there will be one) will utilize the great things this game does, and improve on its weaknesses.

This is an incredible bargain. This was a state-of-the-art graphics/game package when we bought it for our kids in '94 or '95 -- and it's such a great game that our 5-year-old still plays it! Really a fun story -- great characters, lots of fun adventures, good music. Lots of games hidden within the adventure. Our kids have liked all of the Humongous titles (Fatty Bear, Putt Putt, Freddi Fish), and they are just incredible bargains when Humongous takes their price down after a couple of years. A can't-miss purchase.

Left Behind Eternal Forces CD-ROM Review

Left Behind Eternal Forces CD-ROM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would like to appologize on behalf of the Christian and Gamer community for this pitiful excuse for a game. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but that was actually the nicest wording I could muster. My husband is a game developer, and I happen to enjoy console and PC games immensely. We both also consider Jesus to be our Lord, Savior, and friend. So naturally, we were curious over the idea of merging spiritual concepts and Biblical principles with gaming enjoyment.
The opening video gave us some hope that this apparent stategy-based game could show promise. That hope was, I'm sad to say, repeatedly bludgeoned to death before being dragged through poorly defined and highly pixilated streets. But nevermind the graphics. Our biggest issue with the game was its content, which came off rather immediently as judgemental, legalistic, abrasive, condemning, and last but not least...hokey. Go find eight friends to invite to church? Come on now, people. Kids listening to generic rock music bring down your 'spirit' to the point of character apathy? I guess in that case, my husband and I would be considered the 'bad guys' in this particularly narrow and sheltered version of reality.
Bad joke or no, the only effect we could imagine a game like this having on someone who doesn't have some vaguely accurate concept of Christianity would be to further aggrivate the intollerant and unrelatable stereotype, whilst generating further repulsion and misunderstanding. If I happened to be someone on a mission to make Christianity and even the Left Behind series look pathetic, this would be one of the first pieces of media in my arsenal. As my mission is something quite the opposite, I ask that if you havn't played this game, please don't bother. And if you have, please see it as a parody and find it in your heart to forgive.
