This software is not for individuals in the beginning level.
The Speech Recognition has much to be desire. I have tried with
native americans and never reach the native level even in the
easy level. This is very frustrating for the individuals who
are trying to learn a new language. Also with this software is
impossible to reach the Internet. I think Instant Immersion English is superior to this one.

Oxford Dictionary of Quotations Fifth Edition Review

Oxford Dictionary of Quotations Fifth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am off to Africa, the Taita foothills below Kilimanjaro, where I plan to spend a year or two working on a novel. Can't be lugging my Bartlett's, so I opted for Oxford Quotations on CD. Install it to the hard drive, or onto a flash drive, along with Mr. Webster and the Rand McNally World Atlas and a few other choice references.
Then I discover that Oxford Quotations must be online. Online? I won't even have electricity. I'll be recharging spare laptop batteries by solar panel. Transferring the reference CDs to a flash drive was intended to minimize battery consumption. If there was anything in the marketing material about the quotations being online only, I certainly didn't see it. I thought I was buying a CD of Oxford Quotations, not a CD that simply installs a program for searching for quotes online. I already have an online quote reference, and it is called Google.
This CD is worthless to me.

Classic Games Galore (Jewel Case) Review

Classic Games Galore (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

I bought this mainly for Rook, but sometimes play the other games too. The most annoying thing about this package is that you must have the CD in the drive to play. I understand that it's for copy protection, but it's very irritating if you want to load it onto your laptop for travel. Most games have some interesting variations (Rook has classic, tournament, and Red One), but if Atari and Hasbro had really thought it through they could have allowed more variation for house rules, like some PC versions of Monopoly do. No apparent differences in the computer players either, beyond the silly animations. The tutorial feature is a nice touch. Pretty basic stuff, but a good buy for under $10.

Delta Force: Xtreme Review

Delta Force: Xtreme
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta Force: XTreme is a re-make of the excellent original "Delta Force", which was released in 1998. They've pulled the best levels out of the original game and ported them over to NovaLogic's latest graphic's engine, along with adding some more levels. And the results are amazing! From the moment I was plopped into Mission one (the same Mission One from the original game), I was in heaven. I hadn't played the game since 98, so the nostalgia I felt was palpable. It was so fun to be able to play through that very familiar level with the superb graphics, which bear a strong resemblance to the FarCry graphics, only with even longer draw-distances. And if you can see a place, you can go there. You can travel for miles out of your way if you want to. Truly open-ended.
I liken the gameplay to Operation Flashpoint. It's pretty difficult and there doesn't appear to be a way to save your game. However, it does give you the option if you are killed, to re-start the level with full ammo and the enemies you've killed already dead. But that felt kinda like cheating. I'd have preferred a save-anywhere scheme, or at the very least, a couple of save points would help. As it is, it's very difficult, which adds to the tension. I kinda actaully like it that way really, since it forces me to be careful, however the option to choose a save scheme would be appreciated for those who can't live without it.
Enemies appear in droves, and come from all over at the sound of gunfire. You're best off to lie down in prone position and try to pick them off. However, I have not yet found a way to get more ammo. There is no manual with this game. One mission I started with 300 rounds, and that's it baby. I couldn't grab more from fallen enemies or find any anywhere. By pure luck, I finished the mission as my ammo meter reached zero. There may be a way to get ammo that I don't know about, but I haven't found it.
I haven't tried multiplayer yet. Though I am greatly looking forward to playing the 25 included co-op levels with my brother over NovaWorld. The last time we did that was when Delta Force: Land Warrior came out, and that was a blast. At the time, we loved NovaWorld. It was stable, and I'm amazed to see it's still around after all these years.
NovaLogic has been around a long time too. They've been making great games since I bought my first computer. Not many game companies are left from that era, and it's a testament to their dedication to all their games, both old and new. Nothing is abandoned. If you're a fan of an old NovaLogic game, there's still help and support on their website for you.

I was having a hard time finding a font that was elegant but easy to read for addressing my daughter's wedding invitations. "Windsor Sword" was just what I was looking for and have used it for a second daughter's wedding invitations also. My niece has borrowed it for hers and we have all had numerous comments on how beautiful and elegant it was and is for this purpose. I recommend this CD to anyone looking for something elegant and unique.

Incredible product for the price!! Pay little attention to the previously written review about how poor the product's functionality is. The reviewer claims there are no drawing features, no cropping features, and that you are limited to the templates given. This is completely untrue. After five minutes on the program I was able to design logos from scratch, have COMPLETE layer control, and use cropping features. I have very little experience designing logos (about 10 hrs behind adobe photoshop cs3), and I was able to design excellent logos. The program also comes with business card designing software which I have yet to use. Incredible program for $20. I felt compelled to write a review after being mislead by another review! Good buy.

Capitalism Plus Review

Capitalism Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Professor Thomas Kosnik,
Consulting Professor, Stanford School of Engineering, and Lecturer, Harvard Business School , Technology Today, CNBC-TV Cable
"Capitalism is a world class, hands-on learning experience which I've used at Stanford School of Engineering and Harvard Business School. Gamers not only learn the subtleties of growing an entrepreneurial business but also learn about leadership and team building necessary in any business situation." "Capitalism is very realistic and will allow the dynamics to change depending on whether you're selling a cola product, which is sort of a low tech-branded consumer good, or whether your selling consumer electronics or a PC."
Professor Drew Fudenberg
Harvard University
"This game does an excellent job of modeling many of the key aspects of modern business. Not all aspects of it are realistic, but enough of them are that many sensible strategies are encouraged. In particular it's gratifying to me to see that the game rewards thinking about sources of long-term competitive advantage, be it from brand recognition, low production costs gained from learning-by-doing (a nice touch!), a monopoly on high quality inputs, or a big technological lead."
Businessweek, October 21, 1996
Capitalism isn't just for those who aspire to be the next Michael Dell or Sam Walton. It can be a fun and useful exercise for anyone who wants to test their entrepreneurial mettle without, for once, taking any risk. Players can choose to compete against computer-controlled rivals in four different industries: farming, manufacturing, raw material mining, and retailing. For a truly adventurous and time-consuming game, players can mix and match industries as captains of giant conglomerates. As in the real world, players compete locally, in one city, or fight it out on the global stage.
With so many possibilities, Capitalism is an intense strategy game, much like chess, where players must constantly think ahead. As such, it could easily overwhelm novices. But by adjusting several factors--competency and managerial style of the computer-controlled rivals, for example, can be varied from very aggressive to conservative--gameplay can be suited to various styles and speed. The game even allows a player to hire presidents to manage the day-to-day operations of different divisions so the player can concentrate on the big picture.
Far Eastern Economic Review, September 26, 2002
The mass market isn't the only audience for Chan's games. Like Virtual U, Capitalism has made the leap from game room to classroom. Because of its high degree of realism, the game has been used by professors at institutions like Harvard and Stanford Universities to help students learn basic business principles. Chan is hoping that Restaurant Empire and Hotel Giant will also be adopted for training and education. "Simulation games are a fun way to learn about anything," he says. "They prove that computer games aren't just about shooting things but can also be educational."
CNN - 22nd May 2002
Kristie Lu Stout, CNN Correspondent
Some guys have all the luck. They have the billion dollar market cap, the brand, and the empire, while the rest of us spend our lives toiling away in cubicles with no chance to ever run the show. That is until now. Even the desk jockey can claw his way to the top in "Capitalism," the game.Hong Kong game developer Trevor Chan just released the follow-up to the award-winning original, but the objective is the same. Move your assets to turn an upstart into the most profitable company in the world. First-time players can choose a challenge like, the world in your hands, where you manage a research and development lab out to post annual revenues of $400 million, and as you take on the competition, that's when the real drama begins. But "Capitalism" is no Business 101. Critics call it a deep involving game that could test even the sharpest business document. In fact, it's been used as a simulation exercise for business students at Stanford University.

Bookkeeper 2007 Review

Bookkeeper 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For our small construction company this accounting software piece is a welcome relief. We have been using Bookkeeper since the 2005 release and the 2007 release brought a host of excellent improvements. This accounting software does thorough job costing, invoicing, payroll, check writing, 1099, 941, 940 tax form filing. It's very easy to learn and use and does a wonderful job. We've used peachtree, simply accounting, and quickbooks and find this to be our choice of the four -WOW! Yes that's a wow because it costs only $30 and payroll tax table updates only cost $35/year. While you can't download your transactions from the bank, we do accounting every week so that does not really matter. With this software you can track your accounts payable, your accounts receivable, your debit and credit card expenditures. You can apply your checks, credit and debit card transactions to specific projects, break them up between projects and particular expense accounts on those projects. You can enter employee time cards, simply select the time card when it's payday and it automatically fills out the payroll check. You can keep track of multiple bank accounts and businesses as well. We highly reccommend this accounting software package to the small or medium sized company. We do residential construction and this software will handle up to $10 million/year annual revenue. Bookkeeper is far easier to learn than the others and will make your accounting a breeze... almost pleasant!

Nancy Drew: The Final Scene & Treasure In The Royal Tower Review

Nancy Drew: The Final Scene and Treasure In The Royal Tower
Average Reviews:

The Final Scene and Treasure in the Royal Tower are both great games. Treasure in the Royal Tower is my favorite out of the five I have(Secrets Can Kill, Stay Tuned for Danger,The Haunted Carousel and, of course,The Final Scene and Treasure in the Royal Tower). I have absolutely no complaints on any of these five games, except for in Secrets Can Kill the characters are very cartoony. In The Final Scene, the culprit was the person I least expected. All in all, I think the Nancy Drew games are the best computer games ever made(along with The Sims). These games are great for kids and adults alike, and if you don't buy at least one Nancy Drew game, you'll be missing out on some major family time. Buy this game, and you won't regret it. I guarantee. You won't regret it, and you'll want to buy more the minute you beat the game.

Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Review

Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know, being a Carmen Sandiego fan, I have beaten all the other Carmen games and still sought to find the Junior Detective. Well, my actions can mean a few things, such as that I'm a die-hard Carmen-game freak, and that Carmen games are really, really good and fun to play. These are both correct, the reason being that even the most junior of Carmen games, with it's super-spy theme, is more fun than regular kid-friendly games geared toward older gamers. True, Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective is for younger gamers, but also true is the fact that it's not one bit less fun because of that reason alone. In a much miniature version of Carmen Sandiego World Detective, Carmen has again stolen a bunch of the world's monuments and it's up to the "junior detective" to travel to different countries, run their magnifying glass over mysterious objects where the crook is rumored to have passed by, and gather clues and evidence, thus nabbing their crook.
The best part of the whole game is you still "travel" to some unique and different countries such as Peru and Saudi Arabia, and you also learn tons of helpful geography facts and hear the native music of the country you're in when you "travel" there. Not to mention that a kids game like this one with the words EDUCATIONAL pasted up and down the box is actually fun; there's the real benefit. Overall, Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective is fun, enjoyable, cute, and educational; here's a game you can't go wrong with!

Cooking Quest Review

Cooking Quest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking to see if there might be a sequel to this game (boo hoo, no Cooking Quest 2 yet), but had to put my two cents in because of the negative reviews.
Yes, this is primarily a hidden object game. Yes, a few of those objects are -- horrors! -- cigarettes, beer mugs, and suchlike, but given the vocabulary and syntax of the dialogue boxes, the game was clearly designed for grownups, not kids. You have the option of playing in full-screen or windowed mode, but I've never had to switch modes to click an object like the reviewer below; I've had no issues whatsoever running it on a Dell Optiplex (a business, not gaming, PC) with WinXP and a mere 1G of RAM.
The game is short and easy compared to many popular hidden object titles. I mastered Cooking Quest after completing it twice. That being said, in the year that I've owned this game I've played it at least 100 times, know where every single object is, and can complete it in 10 minutes or less. Yet I'm repeatedly drawn to Cooking Quest because the graphics are appealing, the meal-prep mini-games are unique, playing it is extremely relaxing, and it doesn't demand huge blocks of time or your undivided attention the way more complex/challenging games do.
I've gotten far more enjoyment and replay from this inexpensive little jewel-case game than I ever expected, and would love to have more just like it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Review

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You'll wish Harry had his broom when you start playing the latest EA game, Order of the Phoenix. The good news is, although short, at least this one seems finished. The previous game, Goblet of Fire came across as rushed and with several bug problems. Unfortunately, there's not too much else to applaud.
This game begins, briefly, where the book does; Harry saves his cousin from Dementors. It then skips to Sirius Black, Harry's godfather's home and meeting place for the Order of the Phoenix. There, you do have to do *exciting* things like housecleaning and packing, the chores are used to learn some of the first, basic spells. This trip is brief, however, and it's back off to school for the main adventure (and believe it or not, more cleaning!)
Gone, thankfully, is blasting things for Bott's Every Flavor Beans and buying magic cards. Now spells are somewhat more practical and using them or finding secret areas earns "discovery points" which zip out like fireflies giving you stronger skills, unlocking rewards and the ability to learn new magic. Except for a couple of instances, you play Harry--Hermione and Ron tag along. Unfortunately, they are often better at getting in the way and being an annoyance, except for the rare moment when you need more than one person to help you cast a spell.
The game area is realistic and huge; the stairs move and pictures move and talk. But the vast game area gets aggravating quickly as you seem to have always run across campus to solve a puzzle and back again. The main puzzle is rounding up the other members of Dumbledore's Army to the Room of Requirement. But most times you have to get something or solve their problem before they'll go there. (Do yourself a favor see Dean Thomas first--you can work on more than one problem at a time. Save Luna's task for last when your powers are stronger.)
In this game, one of the neat things is you cast spells by a combination of mouse-button and mouse movement--left button for normal spells, moving items, lighting torches. The right mouse-button is used for combat spells which you also learn along the way. You've got two basic key/mouse combo options--unfortunately, you can't customize these. You find your way around by using the Marauders Map. The map itself is pretty useless: It doesn't make much sense as a map layout. But click on either a person's or place's name and it not only marks where they are, it gives you footprints to follow which is helpful. Once you solve their issue, they pop off to the Room of Requirements. You will want to go back there also once and awhile to learn a new combat spell.
Along the way, you can earn bonus points by repairing broken items, revealing secret places, solving puzzles with your magic skills and other things. There are secret passage shortcuts guarded by portraits that will allow you through if you can find out their password. As with the others, you will sometimes have to perform a favor or find out something for them before they give it up. There is a Room of Rewards where you can see your progress and unlock video clips.
You can also earn points and trophies for beating the local champions at Gobstones (similar to marbles), Snap, an exploding card game and wizard's chess. Actually the wizard's chess is quite good and I don't know why they don't put out a separate set of games on this.
The biggest problem with the game is the camera angles. Harry moves strictly in the direction of the arrow, but the camera angle shifts constantly, so you're not just following the character. When the camera shifts so does the direction you're going. So if the camera turns from a back to a side view, you have to switch from the 'up' arrow to the right or left arrow. Often you're pressing two arrows (like up and left) at the same time to make curves or turns. And, if you're running (which involves pressing the shift key as well) it makes it complicated and my keyboard tended to beep in protest. Also, when moving into a room you can lose sight of the character--especially moving through a portrait hole. Or tree branches getting in the way when you're dueling with a member of Slytherin house.
It also makes spell casting more difficult by selecting the nearest item available. If there are several things you can jinx, that becomes more difficult. Or suddenly the camera angle changes and you're facing Harry instead of the item you want to cast the spell on.
The music is very nice, very much in keeping with the movie. There are several cut scenes, but not so many to make it distracting. It sounds like at least the younger actors are lending their voices to the game which is good, although it gets really annoying when Hermione keeps bleating, "Let's find Neville," over and over as you traverse across campus. I also got sick of Nearly Headless Nick and Moaning Myrtle (clicking the left mouse button makes them vanish again.)
Also while you're solving problems for the DA members you've got to try and get homework assignments completed (yay) and can later go back to complete your O.W.L.S. if possible, I found this extremely frustrating again because of the camera changing angles and trying to highlight the correct item to cast in a timed test. There is one more Christmas visit at Sirius' and there are a few good battle scenes toward the end, but the ending is basically an anti-climax. You have one more search after the battles and you can wander around trying to collect all the points, but by that time you're probably ready to head back to the land of muggles.

Oregon Trail 4th Edition Review

Oregon Trail 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got hooked on the original Oregon Trail several years ago, so I was excited when I saw there was one that would be compatible with my new computer. I had to look for a "cheat sheet" online to figure out how to catch fish, and it had some other pointers that helped me navigate through the game. The worst part of the game is crossing some of those rivers and seemingly getting "stuck" and unable to move without ending the program from the task manager (saving the game is an option), then going back into the game. Other than that, the game was a delight. The only thing I miss from the original is being able to have families with you on the trail. Instead you have two other, unrelated people, who may or may not give you good advice along the way.
This game is addictive - I played for hours; died once, and made it all the way to Oregon twice. There is a checklist at the end that determines how much land you get - I got 80 acres the first time, 40 the second.
Again, lots of fun for old and young alike.
