The Utes: A Forgotten People Review

The Utes: A Forgotten People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title of this book is apt, for the author has forgotten to include those Ute groups who lived in, what is now, the state of Utah. This book deals solely with those Ute groups that lived within Colorado. Also the early history of the Utes is largely ignored - 100 plus years of contact with the Spanish is skimmed over in a few pages. Likewise the traditional life and customs of the Utes gets scant treatment.
Most of the book deals with the Colorado Utes history subsequent to the American occupation of the west. The events of the "Meeker Massacre" occupy a large part.
The book was first published in the 1950s and this shows in the way the author, at times, discribes the Utes as "savages" and "bucks". Overall this books merits lie in its desciptions of the events around the "Meeker Massacre" and the removal of most of the Utes from Colorado. Anyone wanting to learn more about the Utes traditional life styles and beliefs would be better served by "The Utes - the Mountain People" by Jan Pettit which is a more up to date treatment of the early history and customs of the Utes (also profusely illustrated.

With large, full page, full color reproductions of all the Saturday Evening Post covers done by Norman Rockwell in his later tears with the Post, this book is a must have for any Rockwell fan. Like the two other books in this set (Early Years and Middle Years) each illustration is accompanied by a page of background on the particular cover. The Stoltz brothers make these essays not only informative, with thorough details about the models, inspirations for the picture and all relevant details regarding the painting, but also quite humorous and entertaining.
This book and the art it displays crosses all generational lines and will satisfy the tastes of art lovers, history buffs and everyone in between.

The View from Asgaard: Rockwell Kent's Adirondack Legacy Review

The View from Asgaard: Rockwell Kent's Adirondack Legacy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This comprehensive overview of the life of Rockwell Kent in the Adirondacks is part of a much needed revival on this incredible American Renaissance man. Some of the pastoral/mountain scenes are particularly well reproduced. Many of these works were gathered for this exhibit from individuals and some on loan from Russia. Kent's association with the soviets caused a virtual artistic rejection from his American art world.
The book is small, and unfortunately only in paperback, but the color is excellent. The documentation and historical data is accurate and engaging. This book is the first effort to group Kent's Adirondack paintings. The layout is lovely and the book has an intimate feel to it.The book also showcases some of his well known and not so well known illustrations. The book reminds us that Kent was also an adept typographer, as he was a consumate graphic artist. Some of his Adirondack inspired graphics reflect the "back to the land" sensibility he embodied. I also had the opportunity to hear Ms. Welsh( author, historian) in person at the Adirondack museum where many of the paintings have been for the last year(1999-2000). She is an astute scholar and admirable expert on Mr. Kent.Kent is sure to find a more secure place in art history, now that he has once again gained recognition for his energetic and artistic art spirit.Welcome back Rockwell, it's about time.

In keeping with a renewed interest in the American artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), this book for the first time in the literature focuses solely on Kent's Adirondack art. Essays define the man and his art, emphasizing the breadth of his activities over forty-three years in northern New York and the roll played by the Adirondack Wilderness landscape as inspiration and refuge in his life and creative work. Illustrated throughout the text, this volume contributes to Kent scholarship by identifying and interpreting Kent's known Adirondack oeuvre. The bibliography cites national as well as regional sources. This book accompanies an exhibiton of the same title installed at th Adirondack Museum until October, 2000.

American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell Review

American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought this was a worthwhile overview of the life and work of Rockwell. Though it was published to coincide with an exhibition there are only five pages that relate to this in a checklist format of work. The rest of the book has three essays hung around New York, Vermont and Stockbridge where the artist lived and between these are pages of his work with detailed text.
Most of Rockwell's paintings in the book have been reproduced many times before but maybe not as well as here (with a 175 screen). What I did find new were several drawings and roughs from the early Fifties of Santa for Hallmark cards and a fascinating twenty-two page section on the background to Murder in Mississippi, a compelling painting completed in 1965. Included are letters, news clipping, reference photos for the two figures in the painting and painted roughs. Oddly Look Magazine, who commissioned the work, used a rather loose color study in the magazine rather than the finished work.
At the back of the book there are twenty-eight pages about Rockwell's various studios over the years with plenty of exterior and interior photos. All the paintings in the book are captioned with title, date and size. The size reference is interesting because Rockwell is seen as a realist painter, especially his Saturday Evening Post from the mid-forties but this is because when a canvas three or four feet deep is reduced to a magazine cover size (or as they appear in these pages) it concentrates all the detail to a near photographic feel. When you see a Rockwell painting close-up it clearly has a fine art look rather than a slick piece of commercial illustration.
Amazon lists plenty of books about this wonderful artist, many of them, I think, just seem to be cashing in on his name with poor selections and printing. This book should be included with the better ones because of its excellent editorial, design and printing.

Everybody Has a Body: Science from Head to Toe Review

Everybody Has a Body: Science from Head to Toe

I bought this book on the recommendation of the well-trained mind for PreK/K. I was disappointed, even though I had looked at the table of contents before I bought it. I had forgotten to look at a sample of the actual lessons. I was hoping for a lot more active activities for the senses that would be PreK oriented and easy for a homeschooling mom. This book isn't that. Slow and Steady Get Me Ready really covers all the things this book does--in a much easier way for me to do with my kids.

Norman Rockwell and the Saturday Evening Post: The Early Years

If you delight in Rockwell's work, then you MUST buy all three volumes of his Saturday Evening Post covers. Lovers of Norman Rockwell should not content themselves with thin sausage factory books that just sample some of his work. The three volumes are great for various reasons, not least of which is the decent size of the reproductions. The "Early Years" volume is interesting, for the duotone works which predate mass full colour printing. This book should be kept in permanent reprint by the publishers.

The First Snowfall Review

Anne Rockwell writes some of the best concept books for toddlers. The simple language flows smoothly from page to page and is complemented by clean, uncluttered pencil and watercolor illustrations. This is a great book to share with even the youngest reader as the winter season approaches. My 2-year old daughter enjoyed this book very much as she did other Anne Rockwell books: "Apples & Pumpkins", "At the Beach", and "Nice and Clean" which share the same high quality of writing and illustration. It is great to know that there are writers of children's books like her who do not rely on "cuteness" to teach or tell a story.

Only Passing Through Review

Only Passing Through
Average Reviews:

Many a young reader will be shocked by the opening page of this story about slavery in the U.S. For the auction block from which a 9-year-old girl was sold in 1806 was in Kingston, N.Y., not Alabama or Mississippi.
Isabella was sold only after a long day in which no bidders showed any interest--until the auctioneer threw in a flock of sheep. She was separated from her aged, ill parents, who were left to fend for themselves, having been worn out by cruel masters. Hell followed for Isabella, for her new master spoke English while she spoke Dutch--like most people in the Hudson valley. For not understanding, he whipped her so hard that her back bore the scars all the rest of her life.
She was sold to a tavern-keeper and, when she was 13, to a neighboring farmer named John Dumont. At 16, she was six feet tall and could do the work of any man. She was forced to wed, against her will, and bore four daughters and a son. In 1817, New York enacted a law that would free all slaves on July 4, 1827. By then, Isabella was 28. But when Dumont reneged on his promise to free her, she ran to a nearby farm, believing that its abolitionist owners would save her. The Van Wageners bought and freed her.
Dumont, however, sold her son Peter to an Alabama plantation owner. To sell a slave out-of-state was then illegal in New York. Isabella took the unheard-of step of hiring a white lawyer to plead a court case for the return of her son. She won, he returned, she sent him to school, and he became a sailor on a whaling ship.
After Peter left, Isabella dreamed that she should travel the U.S. and tell people of her bondage. She took the name of Sojourner Truth. The final pages of this adventure tell some of the accomplishments of this American heroine. The illustrations greatly compliment the story, accentuating the iron will of a woman who would not be bought, or silenced.
The book concludes with a one-page author's note and a chronology of the events of Sojourner Truth's life. In the former, the author writes of those times when evil rules, and good people feel called upon to tell the truth to those who do not wish to hear.
Sojourner Truth was such a person, and she lived in such a time. Children find this story inspirational. Alyssa A. Lappen

We Were the Ramchargers: Inside Drag Racing's Legendary Team Review

We Were the Ramchargers: Inside Drag Racing's Legendary Team
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a car nut and amateur drag racer in the late '60s - early '70s, and I was also a MoPar guy, so the Ramchargers, along with Sox & Martin and Dick Landy, were my heroes. I followed them in NHRA's "National Dragster" newspaper and all the car magazines, watched them on ABC's "Wide World of Sports," and even saw them run in person a couple of times (I lived a long way from their base of operations, and we seldom ventured into each other's parts of the world). So, as an old racer and a collector of Chrysler racing memorabilia, I had to have this book. It is beyond my expectations. Not only is it a very personal and detailed account of the Ramchargers car club, its cars, its members and their racing efforts, but it starts with a good account of Chrysler Corporation history, leading up to the formation of the Ramchargers in the '50s and the "golden age" of Chrysler drag racing, which ran roughly from 1962 to 1974. I had not realized how much the Ramchargers were actually responsible for Chrysler's "golden age" and for much else that is now taken for granted in drag racing. If you're an old Ramchargers fan, a MoPar drag racer, a Chrysler Corp. or drag racing history buff, someone nostalgic for the '60s, or a modern-day racer who would just like to know where it all came from, this book is a great read, and it's also full of photos of the men, their machines, and some legendary races.

This book takes you behind the scenes with the group of Chrysler engineers who, from the 1950s through the 1970s, became one of the most successful and influential drag racing teams of all time. The only team of engineers from an automobile manufacturer to drag race successfully, the Ramchargers broke the most time barriers in drag racing history and earned the most National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Super Stock titles during the sport's golden era of factory competition.

Distant Shores: The Odyssey of Rockwell Kent Review

Distant Shores: The Odyssey of Rockwell Kent

This effort may not appeal to everyone...certainly not as a coffee table book....but for those of us who follow Kent, his writings, his art and his life story, it is a commendable compliment to the study of his art. This book drove me nuts, so much so that I travelled to Greenland to see the Arctic light and shadows for myself. Kent captured the light and images of a unique land and this book provides a worthwhile reference to many of his Greenland landscapes. I sure would like to see one of his original landscapes hanging on my wall at home:-)

Norman Rockwell: The Underside of Innocence Review

Norman Rockwell: The Underside of Innocence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Norman Rockwell's paintings are generally seen as imagery of all-American virtues, values, individuals, and scenes, the John Hopkins English professor Halpern sees them as "more challenging and complex" than even the most sophisticated critics have imagined in the recent revival of interest in Rockwell; which revival has mostly reaffirmed the general regard of his paintings. Halpern looks to Rockwell's famous painting "Triple Self-Portrait" for indication--and in a way confession--that there was more to Rockwell's paintings than is realized from the first impressions of their imagery and recognition and often identification with their subjects. Rockwell's insistent, undying "jokey inventiveness," evidenced more directly in his autobiography "My Adventures as An Illustrator," is seen in the often overlooked details of his paintings. The woman in "Rosie the Riveter" celebrating American women's role in the war effort of WWII has Irish facial features which identify her with the ethnic and working classes, not the middle-class matrons, businessmen, and shop owners who see their mainstream, traditional values represented by Rockwell. Also, Rosie's muscular arms go against the typical image of women as slender and in need of male protection. Halpern similarly interprets details of other paintings to find symbols or intimations of homosexuality, voyeurism, and other sexually-laden topics. Halpern does not go so far as to make Rockwell out to be lascivious or meanly subversive. The author does, however, argue and abundantly demonstrate the point that Rockwell's paintings are more complex, more Freudian, than this painter openly admitted to and than nearly all viewers realize.
