(More customer reviews)Published a year after Norman Rockwell's death, in 1978 and by Curtis who obviously have access to all his work for the Saturday Evening Post this will be the only complete listing of his work. The nine chapters (another two have biographical articles and books) cover it all: magazine covers; illustrations for books and magazines; portraits; greeting cards; calendars; ads and a nice touch I thought a chapter about Rockwell's seventy-nine ad drawings for Massachusetts Mutual Life, all of which are shown, including one that was never used. They were used from the fifties to the early sixties.
This is a reference book and though it includes a thousand pictures, in black and white, they are really just here as a visual guide and to make the listings more interesting.
Apart from the Massachusetts Mutual ads I mentioned the other chapter that intrigued me was the one on Rockwell's ad work. These are listed, rather oddly, by magazine title and the month so there is a lot of repetition because campaigns for major brands would be spread over several big consumer titles. The biography only runs up to 1978 so it doesn't include the fascinating Advertising World of Norman Rockwell,The, a large size book with just over two hundred ads in color. I've always enjoyed looking through this book because it has so much of Rockwell's work that is not normally seen in books about him.
Mary Moline has done fans of America's favorite artist a favor by compiling this unique reference book.
