Do not buy this product. It is exceptionally hard to load and then it will not work. Broderbund has a tech support that hits a new low for not caring about its customers. Sorry stuff period.

NEW OXFORD THESAURUS OF ENGLISH Review

NEW OXFORD THESAURUS OF ENGLISH
Average Reviews:

I installed the Thesaurus on my new Dell workstation running Windows XP. I soon observed peculiarities when I was editing in Word or Adobe Pagemaker. The automatic pop-up feature of the Thesaurus interfered with my editing. I could no longer select something and then type over it. The Thesaurus came up instead. I couldn't live with this, nor could I find a way to change that behavior, so I uninstalled the product. I cannot use it. I went back to a 13-year-old copy of American Heritage Dictionary (and thesaurus), which works fine without automatic pop-up.

Encarta Reference Library 2004 DVD Review

Encarta Reference Library 2004 DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Encarta is the top seller in the electronic encyclopedia market. It incorporates more multimedia bells and whistles than any of the others, and probably has the slickest interface and navigation. It has many graphics and streaming video presentations, and another interesting feature is the "virtual tours," which allow you to explore ancient cities such as Babylon as they might have been in their heydey. It has more pictures, photos, and illustrations, as a percentage of total content, than any other major encyclopedia.
All this extra graphic content comes at a cost, which is that the average Encarta article isn't as long or detailed as the other sets. However, this doesn't mean they're short; I compared the "Bird" article with those in several of the others, and in Encarta it's 20 pages long, but the World Book's is 40 pages, and the Britannica's amazingly was 112 pages. However, the Encyclopedia Americana's was also 20 pages long.
I also checked the biographies for several important people, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, which I assumed would be among the longest and most detailed in the encyclopedia. Washington's was 37 pages, Thomas Jefferson's was 29, John Adams was 15, but Ben Franklin's was only 6, oddly enough.
Depending on the age and education and other considerations, one might be better for your needs than another, so I thought I'd offer brief comparisons below, based on my own research. I include the Columbia one for comparison although I don't know if a CD version exists. The print version of Collier's is likely dead at this point, as a result of its acquisition by Microsoft.
Encarta--35,000 articles, with 3500 extra articles added from Microsoft's acquisition of Collier's, giving it a more academic quality in the recent edition. 8,000 photos/illustrations (14,000 in deluxe), 115 videos/animations (150 in deluxe), and 2,000 sound clips (2,300 in deluxe). Has the most advanced search capabilities. Searches include all boolean operators plus NEAR (for within 8 words). Can also limit a search by category (Life Science, Geography, Performing Arts, etc.)
A unique feature of Encarta is that Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make it attractive to those interested in African and black studies. There is a special Africa Library of Black America, with over 160 articles on black literature, ranging from slave narratives to poetry to non-fiction to novels written by eminent black authors. The Africana articles and the Africa Library entries even appear on the main Articles drop-down menu for easy access--the only specific literature category with such prominence.
In addition, the Encarta World Atlas allows you to show African countries by tribe and language, so you can see which tribes and languages occur where geographically. There are hundreds of articles on African tribes and ethnic groups, discussing their history, culture, language, and art, in addition to the usual articles on the countries themselves.
Despite the negative comments from a couple of reviewers about the "carousel interface," I found it quite good, and you don't have to use that access method if you don't want to since there are others.
Britannica--contains most articles, at 65,000. Also the most technical. Very good science and international content. Science is 40% of total material. However, it's very technical. No matter what Britannica says, it is not appropriate for anyone under 12th grade and probably first year of college. Most of the technical articles are written as though they're intended for practicing professionals in a field who are looking for a quick review of an area. The article on Bird is 112 pages long, and the one on Western Philosophy is 199 pages. However, if you want the ultimate in scholarly substance this is the one for you. Librarians prefer the World Book to the Britannica since it's easier to use.
World Book--the best selling encyclopedia in it's print version. 17,000 entries, 28,000 illustrations (over 80% in color--largest number of any set). Consistently rated the best overall set by librarians. A unique feature is that articles are written at the level of the expected reader. The CATS article will be at an easier level than PHYSICS.
Encyclopedia Americana--contains 45,000 articles and 24,000 illustrations, which is close to that of the Britannica, but only 15% are in color--the lowest percentage of any adult set. In contrast to the Britannica, entries are more specific and shorter, rather than longer with broader coverage. Librarians say they prefer it to the Britannica.
Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia--Unfortunately, I don't have an article figure, but there are 10,000 pictures, 1,200 maps, 200 video and animation clips, and 15 hours of sound. CD version includes the complete text of all 21 volumes of Grolier's Academic American encyclopedia. The multimedia version also includes additional articles written especially for this edition. Has powerful search capabilities. You can search the usual way, by title or topic, but you can also search by portion of a word, word proximity, and in what Grolier's calls Complex Mode, you can specify the search by media type--text, picture, map, table, factbox, audio, and video, and by 10 major categories--such as science, technology, geography, and history.
COLUMBIA ENCYCLOPEDIA--50,000 entries averaging about 200 words in length. Mainly text based, only has 500 illustrations. The most heavily slanted toward biography, with 45% of the entries being biographical. For example, it contains every name from King James Version of the Bible. The lack of an index is made up for by extensive cross-references within articles.
Hope my little comparison review helps. Happy encyclopedia buying and reading!

I Luv House Pets Review

I Luv House Pets
Average Reviews:

I bought this game (with my own money mind you) thinking it would be something like zoo tycoon or Nintendogs;build a pet hotel, take care of pets, fun mini games YAY! I was SEVERELY disappointed. Your basically the mayor of this town for pets and you play various mini games to get food for your citizens and increase population. The first few levels were mildly entertaining, but the fourth level where you have to get a train to your city by jumping over logs and ducking under Stick things is literally IMPOSSIBLE to beat. Its not just because I'm bad at it but it is literally impossible. When you jump over logs you fall VERY slowly back down to Earth, and theres no way to hit ground faster, so when theres a stick you need to duck under after jumping the log, you ALWAYS fall on top of it and crash. Maybe the rest of the game is fun, I don't know because you cant make it past the fourth level. DO NOT BUY! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Encarta Deluxe Encyclopedia 2004 Review

Encarta Deluxe Encyclopedia 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no doubt that the [$] price is a good incentive to give Encarta Deluxe 2004 a try. Before you do spend a bit of time examining all the available encyclopedias and most important put time into figuring who will be the primary user. If research and detail is required consider spending a few dollars more and getting the Encarta 2004 Reference Library or consider Encyclopedia Britanica; possibly even World Book.
I mention this because Encarta does a reasonable job as an encyclopedia but as others have discussed, is brief to the point of being unsatisfying. Where Encarta makes up for the lack of detailed text is in it's multimedia content and interface.
Microsoft has done a fine job of making a Encyclopedia for the casual user and has outdone itself in areas like interactive tours. The good side of brevity is the way Encarta holds one's interest without being terribly challenging. For middle school students Encarta Deluxe 2004 is a good choice as it makes learning fun. It's negative side is important as well. Compared to Encyclopedia Britanica the articles are too brief and simply lacking for adult content. Users from High School Juniors through University students will need more details not to be found in Encarta or it's additonal web content. The links, however, are substantial and useful to those of all age and learning styles.
In conclusion, Encarta Deluxe 2004 is fun to browse and is engaging in a way Britanica is not. If you are a visually oriented user that doesn't need adult level discourse or the sometimes stuffy writing style found in Britanica. if you enjoy tooling around 2D and 3D areas of importance then Encarta is your encyclopedia.

DK 3D World Atlas Review

DK 3D World Atlas
Average Reviews:

Although I bought the "Latest Version for Vista" of the DK 3D World Atlas I can't get it to download on my HP Touchsmart with Vista. I can't even get the disc to open and use it that way by inserting the disc each time I want to use it. All there is above a blank page with the toolbar is "3D World Atlas (Not Responding)". When I try to select any of the toolbar options all I get is the Vista spinning icon which never stops spinning. In trying for Technical Support it took over a week for them to answer my e-mail. Then their solution was to "TRY shutting down all the other startup items for all the other software on my computer to ensure that there are no conflicts" (even doing this they weren't sure if it would work) - and then to "re-enable all the startup items". This "solution" is really unacceptable as I don't want to risk not re-enabling all the other startup items. In e-mailing Technical Support again I never got a response.

Adventure Workshop Preschool (Jewel Case) Review

Adventure Workshop Preschool (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

I was so excited to get this four pack of games for my 3 year old son. We have the Reader Rabbit Toddler game and he has outgrown it, so i was excited to give him something new to challenge him and move him closer to being able to read. Unfortunately, we ended up returning this item for a full refund on the same day that we received it.
We have Windows 7... these games were created a long time ago and are not compatible with our current operating system. My husband is extremely computer savvy, builds our computers from parts and does some programming. He could not even get two of these games run properly.
The one game that we WERE able to install and run was the Reader Rabbit game. I played Reader Rabbit as a kid myself, and as i've mentioned, my son already has played the Toddler version and loved it. So i was shocked at how awful this Reade Rabbit is. The interface is horrible, it takes a LOT of clicking and waiting, clicking and waiting to even get to the games, and the "paths" to the games are not intuitive enough for my son to do on his own, meaning i have to stand over his shoulder the whole time. Once you DO get to the games most of them are either not fun or too difficult to figure out. I was sitting right there with him and i had trouble understanding some of the games, so how is my 3-year-old supposed to?? I actually have several other complaints about this product, but i think i've made my point. DO NOT waste your time or money on this package deal - you get what you pay for, so if $12 for 4 games seems too good to be true.... IT IS!

This is a geat program. My husband bought the program when our daugter was about 4 months old and she just loved watching the book being read to her. Now she is about a year old and has to play the game every night before bed. It is a wonderful program, you can have the book read to you or you can choose to play on each of the pages. We are always finding somthing new on the pages. I just hope thay make one for The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

The Cat is back--Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat that is, and so are Thing One and Thing Two, his mischievous sidekicks. Kids play along with Tommy and Sally, and their rainy afternoon gets a big boost when the Cat in the Hat "steps in on the mat." Filled with fun activities, kids can turn the house upside down and inside out playing three games: The Balancing Act, The Clean-up Machine, and Pop-Up Activities. Designed to delight ages 3 to 7, children also expand their vocabulary, develop word recognition, practice reading, and more.
In The Balancing Act, kids interact with the Cat in the Hat by balancing his load as he holds up just about every household item imaginable. Children add things or take them away from each side to keep the Cat from falling, and, when he falls, it's no small crash. In The Clean-up Machine, children help clean up the mess created by clicking on objects around the room and directing the arms of the Clean-Up Machine. Other fun activities appear as clickable objects in Pop-Up Activities. Click and throw a basketball, design a portrait, and more.

Treasure Cove and Mountain (Jewel Case) Review

Treasure Cove and Mountain (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an elementary school computer teacher, I can attest that Treasure Cove is one of the most popular "free time" activities at my school for grades 2-5. With sound and question reading turned on, however, kids as young as kindergarten can enjoy this game. I purchased both games for my 8 year old daughter for the summer, though I also got caught up in playing them! The games are quite lengthy in order to "win", but are engaging enough to keep kids wanting to play that long. Also, after "winning", kids can continue to play for as long as they want. Of the two, I definitely prefer Treasure Cove for its ease of play as well as the questions; Treasure Mountain appears to be more of a "vintage" game with less fluid graphics, awkward controls, and questions that are more confusing, even for an adult. Treasure Mountain also requires that your monitor resolution and color depth be changed, which is a hassle to do every time the game is played (though it's a great opportunity to teach your kid how to change their own monitor settings!) All in all, the games are quite educational and fun, especially combined in such an inexpensive bundle!

Digital Photography Bible, Second Edition Review

Digital Photography Bible, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very good book for the novice to advanced amateur about the digital darkroom (not just digital cameras). The author does a great job walking through various parts of image capture (both through digital cameras and through scanned images originally taken on film), to editing and modification, through final display, either in print or on the web.
The writing is straightforward--here's what I'm going to say, here it is, and here's what I said. There are good pointers and hints throughout. He covers particular brands of cameras, scanners, software, etc., to some detail. Most discussions, though, are general enough to be applied to any combination of camera, software, computer (provided it's a PC or Mac--no other operating systems mentioned), etc.
The best aspect of the book is its comprehensive nature. Everything's covered. Making panoramas? Yes. How digital cameras work? Yes. Best way to prepare images for the web? Yes. Explaining a dye-sub printer? Yes. On the first read, it will probably be more than you want to know. Later, though, it will be a prompt to try something new.
The CD-ROM comes (mostly) with demos of commercial packages, including PhotoShop 5.5. A nice touch but nothing interesting enough to let me say I've used the CD a lot.
The biggest disappointment is the sample pictures. There are some color pages, but they're just before and after of tricks the author did in PhotoShop. (The book covers some basics about image enhancement, but it will not make you a PhotoShop expert.) The other pictures are in black-and-white and not very clear. In many cases, it is difficult to see the details the author is referring to.
Overall, recommended for the "dummy" or competent amateur who wants a good primer on building a digital darkroom. This is Digital Photo 101 and 102. If you want the advanced courses, go to the web because the state of the art is changing too rapidly to be well covered in a book.
