QuickStudy Algebra Booster Review

QuickStudy Algebra Booster
Average Reviews:

This is just barely tolerable. VERY superficial overview but somewhat fun and interactive. Well, that is, the two voices in the program, one male and one female seem to interact nicely. THAT's as interactive as it gets. Overally, if it says HIGH ACHIEVER or QUICKSTUDY and it's MATH-related, I would avoid it.

Mastering Middle School (Weekly Reader Learning System, 2008 edition) Review

Mastering Middle School (Weekly Reader Learning System, 2008 edition)
Average Reviews:

Very disappointing software. First, this should be marketed as a DVD, not computer software -- it's basically a collection of videos. There's very little interaction, which is what makes educational software interesting to kids. The quizzes could just as easily be on a website or in a booklet.
Further, most of the videos are depressing. There's sad organ-like music playing, and a narrator who talks like he's at a funeral. The narrator then essentially gives a dry lecture on a particular subject, as pictures and some text, and occasionally some video, are shown. There are a handful of videos ("A Closer Look at _____") at the end that are done in a more lively manner, representing only about 5 of the 85 videos.
The collection represents a hodge podge of subjects, somewhat incoherent.
The software's box is totally misleading -- "Revolutionary multi-sensory technology" -- c'mon, its video with audio, and a couple questions here and there.
This software is a good way to teach your child that learning is a rather dull and tedious process, like taking medicine. The software is basically a dry school setting in a box you can take home. The folks who made this software seem unaware of the potential of computer software to excite kids about learning.
I bought this at an Apple store as it was the only middle-school education software I could find there; I'm disappointed that they carry this product -- they usually carry products that are much better.
This was a waste of $30. The software will sit on our shelf until I just throw it away (I would never dream of giving it to anyone else). I'll continue to look for interesting truly interactive fun educational software for a middle schooler.

School Tycoon Review

My daughters have really enjoyed many of the Tycoon games - golf resort tycoon, rollercoaster tycoon, and zoo tycoon. My 11 yr. old daugther wanted Mall Tycoon but after ready so many bad reviews online, I decided on School Tycoon. The program was very easy to install and she was up and playing in no time. They have really enjoyed this game. There are so many ways to customize your school. For 9 and 11 yr olds, this game is just fine and has provided a lot of enjoyment.

High Achiever Pre Algebra Review

High Achiever Pre Algebra

This is a no nonsense review of the material. But my son is willing to plug away and do a chapter at a time. There is a review of the material and then a set of multiple choice problems for each lesson. The starting sequence is a fairly boring walk into a school and classroom. My son in jests says this is actually scarier than all of the fun video games. It runs well on XP pro.

More Mudpies to Magnets: Science for Young Children Review

More Mudpies to Magnets: Science for Young Children
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book and the original Mudpies to Magnets are my best choices for simple, one-page science activities. These science books and experiments were clearly written with the parent or teacher in mind. Although the books contain a wealth of knowledge and experiments, none of the material is overwhelming for the adult participant. The experiments themselves require only inexpensive, household materials. And each of the experiments that we have tried are fun. One caveat: Ignore the age rankings as a wide variety of children (up to age 10) can enjoy all the experiments in these books...from The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.

One Hundred School Days Review

One Hundred School Days
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter chose this book from the library and I have since bought a few of Lizzy Rockwell's books.
Pros:
Very multicultural
Nice flow
Great ideas for 100 day activities
Cons:
(Spoiler Alert!)
The very end is odd and disjointed. After the children collect the pennies and have their party, they send the pennies to hurricane victims. The main character then wonders what the victims will buy with her pennies. This struck me as very odd and a dark tone to close out an otherwise fun book. I like to discuss books with my daughter after we read them and ending on hurricane victims leads to that conversation. Although I like the charity aspect, it's not like the people are going to go buy legos. I suppose it could lead to conversations on basic needs haha.
In summary, the book it very interesting and can only lead to other very interesting conversations.

Mrs. Madoff's class is counting pennies -- one for every day of school. When they get to 10 pennies, they know they've been going to school for 10 days. What will happen when they get to 100? How will they celebrate Day 100, and what will they do with their 100 pennies?

I'm the mother of a just-turned-3-year-old who adores this book. He just started preschool so he can relate to the story very well. This book makes him smile while I read it and he really likes the pictures. The words are perfect for him to relate to. Thanks Anne!
