This DVD struck me as a fair representation of the life and essence of the man. The producers did a great job of showing both sides of debated history, and then leaving the viewer to decide for themselves. (Did Porter assassinate Boggs or didn't he? After listening to the experts, you can decide for yourself.) Most of all, I found this documentary to be entertaining. By taking the approach of telling stories, rather than just outlining a chronological history of events, I found myself sucked in despite my reservations.
I am in no way an expert on the old west or Porter Rockwell. I'm an average joe. My hunch is that no person who considers himself an armchair history buff will ever be satisfied 100% with a documentary. (Watching a history buff rip apart a documentary is a bit like watching a Trekkie complain that a Star Trek movie wasn't accurate to beloved cannon. It's all debatable, and often they debate just to enjoy displaying their knowledge of minutiae.)
For me, however, I care about the impact it had in my life. After watching "Porter Rockwell" did I feel I have a greater interest in his life? Did I find a greater desire to learn more? Do I feel I know the historical figure on a more personal level?
ABSOLUTELY.
Well done.
P.S. One of the best tests of this video was my wife. She's a very tough critic and rolled her eyes when I told her we were going to watch SFTLO Porter Rockwell. About 5 minutes in, I could tell she was completely hooked. At the end she admitted that it was "pretty good" which is her way of saying she liked it but wouldn't admit more.

When Orrin Porter Rockwell died of a heart attack in 1878, his namewas as well known as Brigham Young's. Cowboys sang songs about him,and newspapers had frequently printed scandalous accounts about themalicious Mormon destroying angel. But to many, Rockwell was aguardian angel, and it could easily be said that he saved far more livesthan he took. It seems history tells two contrasting narratives aboutone of the West's most controversial men. Yes, at times Porter Rockwellcould act violently, yet he was overly generous to those in need. At leasttwo dozen people died at his hand, yet in every instance he was exonerated. As the ninth person baptized into the restored Church, Porter wascentral to the early growth of the Church, even though he was nevercalled to a position of leadership. He was called a saint and a sinner, a lawman and a criminal, a hero anda villain. Indians feared him, saying he was impossible to kill, but somepeople traveled hundreds of miles to try. Although his death by naturalcauses likely disappointed the many outlaws seeking his life, it also fulfilleda prophecy given by Joseph Smith that no bullet or blade wouldever harm Porter Rockwell.A friend of Joseph Smith's since childhood and later his bodyguard, Rockwellsaved the life of the Prophet more than once. Porter also served as abodyguard to Brigham Young and helped guide the first pioneers acrossthe plains to the Salt Lake valley. He became a legend as a frontiersman,a marksman, and a man of iron nerve. And though many outsiders characterizedPorter Rockwell as a notorious, vengeful murderer, those whoknew him saw a protector, a miraculous healer, and a loyal friend.Stories From the Life of Porter Rockwell is not a biography, nor is it fiction. It is a collection of accounts about Porter Rockwell that provide insight into his character, his incredible physical stamina and skill, and his devotion to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. While others of his time acted differently than he, his life was a legitimate and lawful response to the world in which he lived. These are the stories that his contemporaries found significant.
