Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008 Review

Having played this series since the end of the previous century, this version is the best yet. For long time fans, there have been plenty of tweaks and additions to make the game that much more addictive and consuming. For virtual newbies, the game may at first seem daunting in its complexity. Fear not, SI has your back. This year they've included a tutorial to help get your feet wet. They also got a new assistant function that will give you context sensitive suggestions. Once you've got your bearing, it becomes a bit like the Microsoft Office Paper Clip. Fortunately, it's a feature easily turned off.
In general, the game play is fantastic. All the aspects of an international career in management are present. You've got your first team, your reserve squad and a youth set-up. You train your players to keep them fit and make them better. You design your tactics the way YOU want your team to play. Then you set them loose on game day to watch them ignore your best laid plans and get trounced. ;)
Be warned: The popularity of this game is not based on fancy graphics or fast-twitch muscle fiber. To succeed at this game you've got to be patient and attentive to detail. It's very much a marathon, not a sprint.

Backyard Football Review

Boys and girls (and their parents--believe me!) will love this fun, exciting football game from Humongous Entertainment. It features characters familiar from other "Jr. Sports League" series: Easy-going Keisha, lightening-fast Pete, and others of different ages, races, sizes, and abilities.
The action is fast and the selection of plays is great fun (you can also create your own plays!). Passing plays are the most difficult; you might want to encourage your child to focus on running, kicking, and defense, and help him or her with passing. (Our 5-year old eventually got the hang of the whole game). You can set 3 difficulty levels, play a league series culminating in a the "Super-Colossal Cereal Bowl" or play single "pick-up" games, play in preset or random weather conditions, and even make up your own player with different skills (it's fun to name this player after yourself)!
A few complaints: Once again, Pete Wheeler is the athletic, but intellectually challenged kid. I found some of his dialogue offensive--but it offers a good chance to talk with your kids about stereotypes. The compilation of player stats is good, but not as complete as the Baseball game offered by Humongous. A creative and fun addition is the inclusion of several NFL players (including Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Randall Cunningham, Barry Sanders, Brett Favre, and John Elway) as kids playing along with the Jr. Sports League cast. Now, not that I ever play this game, but I recommend Keisha on defense, Pete at running back, Barry Sanders at tight end, Annie as kicker.....
(I also recommend highly the Backyard Baseball Game by Humongous.)

Football Mogul 07 Review

Football Mogul 07

I recently purchased Football Mogul (about a week ago), and have played it off and on. I was hoping for something that resembles the baseball games by the same company. To some extent, I got what I asked for. Somehow though, I have walked away feeling a little cheated. Granted, more time with this game might change my mind, hence the 3 stars instead of 1 or 2. One problem I have with Football Mogul 2008 is the apparent inability to change the rosters in the .csv file. Yes, the game comes with an in-game editor, but it is rather clunky and all you can really do is edit the player's potential based upon what they are projected to do in the current season. Not very helpful. In Baseball Mogul, I could go into the .csv file and change nearly anything I desired with any player that was in the database. I have been unable to locate the place to do this with Football Mogul. Although I went into the .csv file and changed information, the changes did not show up in the game like I had hoped. Another gripe with this game is the lack of updated rosters and ratings. For example, Ricky Williams is, in fact, with the Dolphins in this game (bravo!), but his rating is usually around a 90-96! C'mon, this guy has not even played pro football in almost 3 years, so how can he be one of the best running backs in the game at this point? Also, Trent Green has a high rating as well, which for those of us whom follow the Dolphins and their pathetic season, know that Green is not only horrid and should retire, he is also on the IR for the year. One other mention in this regard is that the Dolphins traded away Chris Chambers many weeks ago, yet he is still on their roster in this game. Considering it was just released about a week ago, one would think that they could have done one final roster check and update before release, eh?
On the positive side, the interface is really pretty easy to use. Things are simple to locate as well, so if you are looking for the team's finances you can just go to the top of the screen and click 'finances' and voila, there they are with a multitude of options at your fingertips.
This game is not too bad, it could have used a little more beefing up in the graphical areas even though it is a text based game. Also, the rosters should have been updated before release, and those of us whom enjoy customizing our players should be given more of an option, whether that is in-game or via utilization of the .csv file. I may add more to this at a later date after more playing time.
Overall = Decent
