CT-ART 3.0 Review

Convekta apparently makes chess software for computer professionals rather than for chess players. While it is true that a disproportionate number of chess players are in fact computer pros, that is not universally the case. No matter how good this program is, it is worthless if you can't get it installed. Installation is near impossible, with no support. I simply can't understand why Convekta cannot have installations as simple and straitforward as Chessbase products (or, for that matter, any other computer software geared to consumers). Others have complained that Convekta's utter lack of user friendliness has made their offerings totally inaccessible, and now I understand why. The installation does not work on this program and the Convekta website seems to acknowledge this offering the following "instructions" instead:
"Training program (download version) is necessary to install from CD with particular structure.
To install the program CT-ART 3.0 you should do the following operations:
1) Download the file
2) Unpack it. After unpacking the program the folder CT-ART 3.0 will be created.
3) Inside of the folder CT-ART 3.0 there are folders 'FONT' and "ENGLISH" which should be copied to a CD. CD catalogue looks like the following:
English
FONTS
4) Double click on the ct-art.exe file in the folder 'ENGLISH' on the CD to start the installation process."
Your guess is as good as mine.

Chessmaster 10th Edition Review

I bought the 10th edition from Amazon and it works okay. But here is my review of the jewel box edition just to warn the reader what THIS product MIGHT be like.
Yes, I am very PO'd at ubisoft and here's why:
I spent three hours today and a couple of hours yesterday trying to get the jewel box edition to run on my computer. (Yes, I have too much time on my hands.) It did not run even though it expressly says on the product that it will run under Windows XP. No matter what I did--I installed it four times, ran all the patches from ubi, I tried various configurations--it would not run. Apparently ubisoft which currently owns the program doesn't care. Last patch was from 2004. Furthermore, their support site just gave me the runaround, requiring me to fill out forms and then redirecting me back to the same path without allowing me to contact them directly. Poor customer service is rampant these days of course, but I think ubi is worse than most.
By the way, I have Chessmaster 10th edition running on my Vista machine (with some minor problems). The irony is that although it is not designed for Vista, it runs on Vista but not XP.
I feel ripped off, but also sad because I have used Chessmaster since the first edition which I think was called Chessmaster 2100, which couldn't beat a class F player, and I have watched the program grow through many editions (some of which I still have) until it became unbeatable and a lot of fun to use with many interesting features. The fact that I cannot use it on my XP machine would be only sad, except for the fact that I paid cold hard cash for the program and can't get my money back.
Bottom line: R.I.P.O.F.F.

MAJESTIC CHESS Review

MAJESTIC CHESS

I have taught children to play chess for about 12 years now and used several different programs in the past to give them a fun way to practice and learn the skills. My favorite program in the past was Chessmates, but it isn't compatible with my new xp machines so I started looking again. I tried Fritz and Chester and it was ok but a bit clumsy in the interface. Then on a whim I picked this up, and I love it! It will still give you the basics for learning chess, though it isn't geared to younger children as well as Chessmates. But my 7 year old son and I are having a lot of fun with the adventures on this game. It's a great way to build your skills and yet it provides some interesting variety too. If my boy hadn't already begun chess with me earlier I think I would have him wait a little to start this. (A lot of the instruction is reading with some basic animation). But we both love the graphics and the fun.
