This book is nothing more and nothing less than one might expect from a book titled "A Norman Rockwell Christmas." It is a collection of about 75 of Rockwell's paintings, each of which has some connection to Christmas. The dominant themes are Santa and family.
There is a brief introduction, which explains the premise and describes the background of a few of the paintings. I was a bit taken aback by the statement in that introduction that, "Humans make the magic, Rockwell reminded us, placing the spirit of Christmas in our own hands rather than in those of some otherworodly entity." Really? So, there is no supernatural, spiritual, otherworldly component to Christmas? Hmmm, it seems to me that a babe born in a manger might take issue with that assertion.
And the paintings actually do reflect that sentiment. Though Rockwell is credited with (or blamed for) depicting a purer, simpler time in the history of America, it was interesting to note the complete absence of any reference to the birth of Christ. This fact prevents me from giving it a higher rating, as I'm hesitant to be very enthusiastic about anything related to Christmas that ignores Christ in such a seemingly systematic way. It's not bad, just incomplete.
Nonetheless, the text of the introduction concludes by saying, "The paintings reproduced on these pages are about Christmas warmth and good cheer and the merry spirit Norman Rockwell wanted to pass on to us all." If that's what you want, then this is the book for you.
