Quicken 2004 Premier Review

Quicken 2004 Premier

I have been a loyal Quicken 99 Deluxe user for five years. In the past, I have tried the 2000 and 2002 versions but have always returned to '99 for various reasons. After trying 2004 Premier, I am throwing in the towel on Intuit and going elsewhere.
In the first two minutes of operation, there were several apparent problems. Reports would only print if you manually printed each individual page seperately. The program failed several times, abruptly shutting down for no reason. I would enter my entire portfolio into the setup account function only to see all the work disappear when I hit "done" (I guess the software takes "done" literally). The import/export function never worked properly, often omitting portions of transactions.
To add injury to insult, there is no email support and phone support is $$$$/minute (a free chat is available but, for some reason, is closed on Thursday and Fridays). Nothing like having to pay to have Intuit correct its own problems.
Intuit seems to have abondoned the concept of creating decent products. After the TurboTax disaster of last year, one would have thought they would have learned. Take it from me, they didn't - run away from this software as fast as you can.

I tried upgrading from Quicken 2007 to Quicken 2008 and was unable to do so without errors that caused my new installation to give an error message, remove new changes, and stop the installation.
I called Quicken tech support and the guy in India (while nice) could only help me do the same things I'd already done and that did not work. After 2 tries, he said, "I don't have any other ways to help you. Try calling Microsoft and see if they can help you. Here's their 800 number . . . Goodbye!" He hung up on me.
I decided to download Money 2008 for their trial period. Money installed immediately and completely! It transferred my Quicken data accurately and fully. (I have used Quicken for at least 16 years and this was a "big" change for me.)
I ended-up purchasing Money - on-line - from Microsoft and making my full change to their financial software, within a week from trying Money 2008. I was VERY HAPPY with the way Money worked, its interface, and its various options. It was easy to change from Quicken!!

MOST OF ALL, I liked being able to get tech support from Money's email help. My actual experience was to have an email within 4 hours, that included a name and phone number if I needed more help. (I had a small problem inputing my serial number because I had my system set to a larger than normal sized font. Money would not allow the necessary information for each spaced section. Their tech support wrote back to me with the help (answer) I needed - I had to reset the system font size to normal (which they told me how to easily do. My serial number information was immediately accepted with no problem. Now, I am the happy owner of Money 2008 and no longer an Intuit/Quicken user.
I must say, my only disliked feature of Money 2008 is it wants to send each electronic check I write for paying bills - individually, instead of allowing me to write all my checks and then send them at the same time.

I will take this problem - happily - since I now have updated financial software that is not "buggie" and with no tech support that actually helps me.
I am going to be a Money user from now on. I highly recommend Money 2008.

money itself is nice enough, but paying more for the premium version over deluxe is a rip-off--every single additional "feature" is actually part of a limited-time trial for a 3rd-party Web service called Gainskeeper. Nowhere will anyone tell you how much this costs until you register for it. The regular Gainskeeper service is $20/yr, which is (surprise!) exactly what you paid to upgrade from Deluxe to Premium, so much for the "free" trial. Among the many ways this sucks includes you have to create and maintain a completely separate second version of your portfolio, store it on their web site instead of your own PC, and then (once you go past an introductory number of trnsactions annually) you have to pay per-transaction to enter your own trade data, anywhere from 20-90 cents each. Very very weak, there's no reason why this can't be included within Money itself for the extra $20. By all means choose Money over Quicken, but stick with Deluxe and save some bucks.

Bookkeeper 2007 Review

For our small construction company this accounting software piece is a welcome relief. We have been using Bookkeeper since the 2005 release and the 2007 release brought a host of excellent improvements. This accounting software does thorough job costing, invoicing, payroll, check writing, 1099, 941, 940 tax form filing. It's very easy to learn and use and does a wonderful job. We've used peachtree, simply accounting, and quickbooks and find this to be our choice of the four -WOW! Yes that's a wow because it costs only $30 and payroll tax table updates only cost $35/year. While you can't download your transactions from the bank, we do accounting every week so that does not really matter. With this software you can track your accounts payable, your accounts receivable, your debit and credit card expenditures. You can apply your checks, credit and debit card transactions to specific projects, break them up between projects and particular expense accounts on those projects. You can enter employee time cards, simply select the time card when it's payday and it automatically fills out the payroll check. You can keep track of multiple bank accounts and businesses as well. We highly reccommend this accounting software package to the small or medium sized company. We do residential construction and this software will handle up to $10 million/year annual revenue. Bookkeeper is far easier to learn than the others and will make your accounting a breeze... almost pleasant!
