Tonka Search And Rescue (Jewel Case) Review

Tonka Search And Rescue (Jewel Case)

My 4 year old son has and loves these games, but I must admit that the mouse movements in both must be exact and he does get a bit frustrated...especially with having to press the space bar to get a vehicle moving in Tonka 2. Is it really necessary to incorporate that step within a child's game? I am 32 and I get aggravted as well. My son also has Tonka (original) and he loves it...but the mouse movements having to be precise are also a great source of irritation for him. This is a kids game; he should not need a degree in civil engineering to operate the thing.

I like this game pretty well. It is fun because they make it feel real, but the graphics aren't there. The have the real guns that they have in the real paintballing, It is also fun because you get to create your team and name your team... and your team members names. If you are looking for a paintball game that meets your expectations, this could be your game, even though it can be a pretty weak game (pending on how good your computer is).

Armed and Dangerous (Jewel Case) Review

Armed and Dangerous (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

This is an action-adventure type game. You start out with a rifle and you shoot enemies (no blood) until you reach the first pub, where you recieve your next weapon.
The graphics are so-so, the people are okay but the background is blotchy in some areas.
One thing that I didn't like about this game is that you cannot use a controller, even if you have one hooked up. You have to use the keyboard, but you can configure your own controls.
The overall gameplay is pretty good except for these things:
1. If there is an object on the ground, you have to run DIRECTLY over it in order to pick it up.
2. If there is ammo (or health) on the ground and you have full ammo (or health) then the object is still shown on the screen, but you can't pick it up.
3. In some areas of the game, even after you beat all of the enemies, they keep reproducing and chasing after you, so you have no choice but to run to the next area, you cannot kill everyone in that particular area.
When I bought this game, it was only $8, so I thought it was a pretty good deal. If it is still $8 when you read this, I suggest buying it, because it will only cost 13 or 14 bucks with shipping + handling, and its not a huge loss. Overall a great game, but not if you're an artist.

Calendar Creator 2005 Review

Calendar Creator 2005

I've never spent so much wasted time trying to get a program to do what I want it to. This is the most rediculous, convoluted way to create a simple calendar, using your own photos in your own chosen order, that I've ever seen in my life. Calendar Creator 4 was simple and straight forward, it just didn't add your photos. Finally I've upgraded and luckily I found a rebate that made this p.o.s. software free. If you want to make calendars with THEIR pictures, maybe you'll like this. There's got to be a better way...

Space Ace Review

Space Ace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"YOU CAN NOT WIN!"
These thunderous words are from the evil Borf after you've made a wrong move and became a meal for a gicantic space monster. As a space hero trying to outmaneuver every deadly obstacle imaginable in the galaxy, you will be hearing Borf put you down you a lot, especially if you are new to these types of games.
Space Ace was Don Bluth's comeback after the massive success of Dragon's Lair in 1983. It had not fared well as expected and for good reason. The game is EXTREMELY hard. In this 'remastered' authentic version for the PC, the lightning quick reflexes if not good memorization skills are still as demanding as the original coin-op.
There are some notable improvements over Dragon's Lair. You have the option to choose different paths which lead to mirrored sequences in the game. You also have the option to energize into Dexter's alter ego: Ace which makes the sequences more thrilling and challenging. Space Ace is also faster paced and a more arcade element exists throughout.
However, there are some scenes in the game where lightning reflexes will not save you the first time around and thus, a lot of replaying and trial and error will be needed get you through to the next level. A good example of this is the space junkyard sequence. Dexter is hopping around a series of platforms and he is quick to lose his balance and fall to his death without any warning. There just simply isn't any time to react unless you hit the right movement way ahead of time. There are even some scenes were the guiding pulsating lights used in guiding you through the game are either misleading (at one point, Dexter was supposed to duck out of the way, but his weapon flashed and he was supposed to move right!) or absent altogether.
If you are a fool for quick reflex games that require persistent, maniacal puzzle solving, movement memorization skills and don't mind replaying sequences over and over again, this game is for you. Otherwise, it's best to get this game and watch the dazzling Disney quality animation. There is some compression artifacts in the video quality and it definitely could have been better as only a little over half the CD capacity was used. The people at Digital Leisure definitely could have spent a little more time improving Space Ace in both the gameplay and video quality department. Otherwise, this authentic version is a considerable improvement over previous versions. The game can now be played in full screen and the stereo sound is crisp and clear.
Again, expect a lot of repetition and frustration stemming from determination to get through Space Ace. I found myself spending long periods of time over the final scene to defeat the evil Borf. I guess his devilish taunts were enough to keep me going after getting constantly blasted into oblivion. I really wanted to shut him up!

MacFonts 2 Review

MacFonts 2
Average Reviews:

Like MacFonts 1, MacFonts 2 basically collects a bunch of freeware fonts [740!] on CD with a printed guide. There is also a PDF guide on the CD that you can grab. The CD has a good variety of fonts, but they're mostly the same ones that you can pull off free font websites. My computer had trouble with the OpenType ones but loaded the TrueType ones without a glitch -- the CD gives you both. This disk mostly collects font families and is heavier on sans serif and serifed fonts than MacFonts 1. It does have a handful of display, script and black letter fonts as well. A lot of the nicer fonts are imitations of more well-known fonts. Nothing on this disk is as well-crafted or fussed over as the fonts you can buy from a type house. Some of the "bold" fonts just look like they've been given an outline in Illustrator and the "condensed" and "thin" fonts are obviously squished rather than redrawn. However, for less than the price of most professional fonts, MacFonts 2 gives you an instant collection of more fonts than you'll actually use.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 - 3 User Pack (with Antispyware) Review

Norton AntiVirus 2008 - 3 User Pack (with Antispyware)
Average Reviews:

I have been running Norton products since the early days when Peter Norton actually was the pre-eminent PC and antivirus guru, back in the 1980s. I have noticed a trend whereby these products take up more and more system resources, and become more and more intrusive. Things have now gotten to the point where I and my small business have abandoned the Norton solution.
I was running Norton Antivirus 2008, and after some update or other, it subtly, but effectively, blocked our VPN connection, so that we could not connect wirelessly to our company server. At first I blamed Windows Vista, but after much hair-pulling, we discovered that it was Norton Antivirus 2008. Even when disabled, it placed a filter between the Notebook computer and the VPN connection, sabotaging it. These people simply cannot get it through their heads that our computers do not exist to run antivirus, firewall, and related products--they are there to do work.
Another unacceptable trait that Norton now does, is that when your product expires, or is about to, it starts bombarding you with obtrusive pop-up windows telling you to renew. And these windows do not follow the MS Windows protocol, with an X in the upper right-hand corner where you can quickly get rid of it. I have come to resent these intrusions. It does not matter now; we have removed Norton from our computers and looked elsewhere for a solution.
Norton violates the first rule of "Do No Harm." I am disappointed to have to abandon them.

MY SON USED THIS SOFTWARE AT THE LIBRARY AND WE WERE EXCITED TO FIND IT ONLINE. SO I BOUGHT 2. AFTER I INSTALLED IT THE PROGRAM WOULD NOT RUN, IT KEPT STATING THAT THERE WAS AN ERROR CODE WITH THE SOFTWARE. AFTER TRYING TO INSTALL IT SEVERAL TIMES IN MORE THAN ONE COMPUTER, I FINALLY TRIED THE COMPANY WEBSITE AND FOUND THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ERROR CODE AND OFFER A LINK TO INSTALL A FIX IT CODE. AFTER I INSTALLED THE FIX CODE THE PROGRAM RAN GREAT.
IF YOU DON'T MIND THE WORK- IT'S WORTH IT. MY SON PLAYS IT EVERY DAY.

Coffee Tycoon for PC Review

Coffee Tycoon for PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently became a big fan of several games in the "Tycoon" series - I really enjoy learning about, and seeing how my actions/decisions impact the feasibility of various businesses & communities. So, when I came across an offer to download "Coffee Tycoon" & try it out for free (for 1 hour of gameplay), I was excited to begin another Tycoon adventure - but I wound up being really disappointed!
In "Coffee Tycoon" you own a series of coffee shops, with your job being to manage the employees, menu, store upgrades, etc... to get to the point where your company has earned 1 million dollars. It's a great concept but, with this particular game, it's difficult to see how your choices impact what is happening. Most things appear to occur by chance - things like problems with orders, leases running up, management issues, etc... occur & yet these are all things that you have no control over.
In all of the "Tycoon" games I've played to date, you can easily see the connection between your choices & the results that occur, but in this game, the things that most impact your bottom line are things you aren't given a choice about. I found this to be quite frustrating!
Now, it may be that these choices become available later on in the game, once you've earned a lot of money - but in order to earn that money, I think it's important to see the value of your choices from the get-go - so you can make changes along the way that will lead to increased employee/customer satisfaction, and ultimately increased profits.
Overall this is the worst "Tycoon" game I've played so far - I wouldn't recommend it.

The following review is by Miss Isabella (6 year old) one of the younger members of dream factory.
"Snuggle with your kitty cats. Run and play with your dogs. Take your horsey out for some exercise. And build your pet resort bigger and bigger."
Parental comment: We noticed this PC game not as engaging as some others. But these things go in cycles. Your child shall learn to play and pamper four legged and fine feathered friends. And these creatures then become your buddies. . . . . . I would recommend the Paws & Claws 'Pet Vet' series over this.

Secret Agent Barbie Review

My 10 year old daughter liked this game and played it with great interest. Unfortunately, she solved it in 3 days of use. She was hoping for more adventures and levels. It has only one mission to solve even though the user visits many "exotic" locations and must learn to use newly acquired skills and abilities. It's interesting, but too short for the older girls. It would seem to last longer for younger girls who are learning how to play computer games.

John Deere North American Farmer Review

John Deere North American Farmer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well I was pretty excited to see that John Deere did a sequel to the American Farmer. The original lacked good graphics and got pretty boring after awhile. I was hoping that North American Farmer would be better, sadly I was disappointed.
When I uploaded it I noticed the graphics were a bit better but lacked a true attention to detail. The animals were always hard to see unless you were zoomed way in, the tractor wheels are not round and don't roll (the new equipment wheels do roll)and thier movement was always unnatural. Also, the characters just appeared to be a bunch of un educated hicks. This all remains the same in the sequel. Sure they added a few hard to see animals and you have a few more options on buldings but over all it's more of the same.
I don't want you to get the wrong idea about this, I do like the game but it does have a few issues. The hay, although a neat option is very time consuming and requires alot of attention, it would be nice to be able to automate this since you have to switch impliments constantly, and it looks more like corn growing than hay. The cool part is that somehow it ends up storing hay even though you sell it and makes for a nice bonus, I am sure this is a glitch. You still cannot move the fence (or pastures) past trees which I always found odd and there is no way to get rid of the trees or plant new ones. The game speed went from 1x, 2x, 3x to 1x, 3x, and 5x. I always played the original on 2x, but 3x now is way too fast, I don't know how anyone could keep up and 1x is just too slow. When raking hay, the raking starts in front of the tractor! When baling and you make a turn 1/4 of the next row disappears! I did have one funny part when I tried to unload an impliment from the pole barn. The tractor just went into an endless loop and constantly tried to remove the equipment, then shot across the screen like a bolt of lightening. A pain but funny none the less.
Overall it is pretty disapointing that Bold games didn't take the time to fix alot of the stuff that stunk in the first game and make it more of an adult game rather than a kids game.

QuickStart Hairstyler Studio Review

QuickStart Hairstyler Studio

The Hairstyler Studio was a big disappointment. It was nice to put my picture in it, but the items was like playing with a paper doll. The items were not realistic and the options were poor, in that it was not giving me many selections, and the hair was like playing with plastic or putty dos. I was hoping for soft realistic hair and more of them. I tried to adjust the selections to short or medium hair dos and the software would not do the task as it suggested. The concept was a good idea, but the reality it gave was poor.

Mighty Math Astro Algebra Review

Mighty Math Astro Algebra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Description
Astro Algebra features imaginative activities and tools intended to make algebra fun and interesting for the junior high school student. As this intergalactic learning adventure opens, the 'Astro Algebra Alliance' invites the user to become the Captain of their flagship, the Algebra Centauri.
Each mission features sympathetic aliens in need of mathematical assistance. Early missions involve simple concepts, and the user can consult the 'AstroNet,' an online algebra help manual, to learn more about associated math topics and terms.
Educational Value
Astro Algebra does not provide basic, step-by-step math lessons. Instead, the program offers a sequence of 90+ missions that cover pre-algebra and algebra concepts. Each mission focuses on a specific topic, and attempts to consolidate the student's understanding of that topic. Unfortunately, the program's teaching tool, the AstroNet, is only loosely linked to the missions, providing generic animated demonstrations and examples for students who need help with the math involved in their current mission.
Parents or teachers can track individual user's progress via a 'grow scale.' This measuring device automatically advances the user when sufficient successful solutions are entered, or can be used to focus the user on certain math skills.
Two modes of use are available throughout the program. In the 'On-Duty Mode,' the student receives a transmission from an alien-in-need, and is transported to one of three stations to complete the mission by correctly solving the algebraic problems posed. The 'Off Duty Mode' allows the user to independently explore the stations. The stations include the Grapher, which is used to create interactive graphs based on ordered pairs; the Cargo Bay, which is a sorting and manipulating tool; and the VariaBlox, which provides virtual manipulatives for better conceptualization of highlighted topics.
Most of the problems used in the missions are challenging and fun, and provide valuable reinforcement of the skills students are learning in the classroom. "My daughter was having trouble understanding ordered pairs, and the information she obtained from the AstroNet really helped clarify the concept for her," was one mother's comment.
Kid Appeal
Although the Astro Algebra's stations are meant to allow for better understanding of the processes involved in solving algebraic problems, our student reviewers initially found the stations to be overly complex, and became discouraged with the program. Attempts to understand the stations by exploring them in the Off-Duty Mode fell short, and our student reviewers were able to grasp the workings of the stations only when incorporated into a mission.
Best for... / Bottom-Line
Student reviewers submitted mixed views of the program's graphics and theme. Older (9th grade) reviewers found the alien-rescuer theme overly juvenile, while younger students, boys in particular, were intrigued by the virtual spaceship and felt that the missions helped maintain their interest in a potentially dull subject.
Astro Algebra provides fun math skills practice and concept reinforcement for students who 'get it.' Students struggling with the basic concepts may require more supportive instructional assistance.

TurboCAD Deluxe 10 Review

TurboCAD Deluxe 10

I bought this because it was a cheap Cad program. I was hoping for a more up to date look and similar tool functions as the CAD program I was taught in school. That was Auto Cad 2004.
This Turbo CAD didn't really grab my attention and I wasn't interested in teaching myself a new Cad program. I played with the floor plan mode a bit but switching back and forth between that and the 3D mode was a bit tricky. That was pretty much the end of it so I gave it to my brother. For the price it's probably worth what it is and it may be suitable for new CAD users. Shop around first before choosing this version.
